Sigmund isn't particularly interesting to look at, looking like your average middle-aged man. His only defining features are his copper hair, short beard and slender physique, and many would describe him as bland-looking.
While Sigmund isn't exactly heroic or righteous, he always tries to do the right thing as long as it's reasonable and doesn't put his life in risk. He would prefer dying peacefully while surrounded by friends and family than falling in combat, having his life cut short in a painful way.
Sigmund had a normal and stable childhood, or at least as normal as it can be when one is the son of both a witch and a wizard. His mother was from a coven that disbanded when one of their members was captured by witch hunters, while his father was traveling for research purposes.
They both met by chance in an alchemist's shop, fell in love and you know the rest. Since then, they lived together in a cottage close to a small village, small enough that it wouldn't draw the attention of criminals or monsters, and the few would be scared away with their magic.
His mother instructed him in the ways of witchcraft and teached him about their ancient traditions while his father educated him in the methodical field of magic. While clearly possessing magical heritage, just like both of his parents, he has been so far unable to cast even the most basic spell.
The nightmares started when he was 13. At first, they only happened once or twice during each year. Then it was every few months. Then each month. Then each week. Now, they happen almost every odd night. In the beginning, they weren't too bad, and ended shortly after they started. But every time it happened, it would be worse than the last time. What once was just a quick scare was now hours of disturbing visions,
Dreams of a place that could only be described as hell itself. A crimson land of brimstone, fire raining from the sky and emerging from the depths of earth. Every time, he would try to escape the crawling flames, only to be slowly consumed by the blazing inferno and burned alive. Every time, he saw himself be charred to the bone by hellfire, conscious during the whole process until he wasn't more than ashes.
When he was 20, before the nightmares got worse, he decided to leave the village his family lived in to find a meaning to his dream and a way to awaken his magical potential, if it even existed. Every month, he sends a letter to his (now aged, but still alive) parents describing the things he found on his travels and the places he visited.
While the world wasn't exactly a pretty place, one could enjoy it as long as one was careful enough to avoid trouble and not draw unwanted attention. Even then, he still tries his best to help those in need, despite his frail body and limited skills.
