From the overseer's log of 'Superdorf' Mirrorwet, Carpenter & Glassmaker

-----------------
1st of Limestone

No no no no NO!

What was I thinking? Why did I focus so on my Project, when our enemies bring war to us?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

They are so many... so many! How shall we survive?

I sound the alarm and lock the gates, waiting to see how the goblins will react. If they climb our walls, perhaps the soldiers can pick them off one by one-- wait.

They're still charging.

Oh. Oh NO.

Domas is just a wood burner. She's not a particularly important dwarf, in the grand scheme of things... but she's served us faithfully for over a year now.

She doesn't deserve to die.

I order the south gate lowered, and the militia marches. Cheesesplatter will fight to save this dwarf... and brave soldiers will perhaps die fighting.

I hope I've made the right decision.

Events as they occured on the 6th of Limestone, year 253...

-----------------
The militia assembles.

The gate lowers.

Captain Zuglarkun bellows in rage--

--for Domas the woodburner is dead, and now there is only vengeance.

The battle is joined.

Dwarves sweep through the trenches, leaving death in their wake.

A miner bears witness, and the death-light sparks in his eyes.

Dwarves flee into the deeps.

-----------------
7th of Limestone

The trolls are slain. The soldiers regroup at the bridge, bracing themselves against the next attack.

From the overseer's log of 'Superdorf' Mirrorwet, Carpenter & Glassmaker

-----------------
9th of Limestone

Death... death in the trenches.

Already three of our own have fallen, and I cannot count the wounded. I watch from the tavern roof, and I cannot count the wounded. Dwarves crawl in the trenches, mangled, gashed, broken.

Those that remain howl with blood-fury and vengeance, fighting now with desperate brutality.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Carnage, carnage, carnage. Blood in the air, blood in the trees. Howls and roars, grunts and screams. It is terrible to watch.

The goblins are numerous... but the dwarf-soldiers fight as one, with a ferocity born of madness.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Death and death and death... the goblins flee, their forces broken. Dwarf-captains give chase; crippled soldiers crawl behind, still clutching their bloodied axes.

The last goblin dies. All is over.

Sift through, medical discharge to training units to those with motor nerve damage. Their fighting days are done, and those injured limbs are just extra blood-filled targets for enemies.

But gods above that was brutal, and I fuckin' love me some brutality in dwarf fortress.

Oh dear sweet carambola above, is it even going to be possible to keep stress under control here? Perhaps we should build dedicated tunnels for the dumping of corpses so that only the refuse haulers ever see them?

Also why is the axe captain swinging about a silver axe? Axes are not supposed to be made of silver. Highly recommend you melt that down before he develops an attachment.

Corpse hauling shouldn't be so bad once it's just the hardened dwarves doing it, and our military's psyche took a nice toughening what with all the carnage. We should be OK on that front.

Now the problem I've had with established forts is when there's *so much* hauling to be done that the dwarves just can't keep up... but hey, the popcap's a bit higher here. Hopefully we'll be alright on that front.

I... I dunno. I'll get rid of it.  ::)

From the overseer's log of 'Superdorf' Mirrorwet, Carpenter & Glassmaker

-----------------
10th of Limestone

The goblins are dead, and now we must pick up the pieces of our shattered world.

The caravan has arrived. A scene of horror awaits it.

A few giant cardinals wing overhead. They've been haranguing us all year.

Two of the caravan guards decide to pick a fight with the beasties.

Hah, they're doing pretty well too-- wait.

Wait.

NO!

The cowardly idiots are fleeing!

We bleed and die for these mushroom-suckers, and they run away with tails behind them! Ahh... I'd order them killed if not for the war we'd start by so doing. Too late anyway... they're gone.

16th of Sandstone

Two migrants arrive.

I assign them military service without thought. Their bodies will help to fill the depleted ranks.

-----------------
21st of Sandstone

Another child is born.

Perhaps there is hope for us yet... but I am tired, and I cannot now see it. I pray this newcomer will live to adulthood.

There is a fey gleam in the eyes of Mafol the mason.

I do not know what she intends.

Diorite. Silk. Chalcedony stone.

Furiously Mafol labors.

-----------------
7th of Timber

Mafol's great work is complete.

It is mighty indeed.

She was in a drink stockpile, but her hands were crippled and she could not uncork the barrels... surrounded by drink, but could not uncork the barrels...

I cannot oversee this fortress.

I cannot oversee this fortress. The madness, the madness, it is beyond me. I cannot contain it. At the end of the month, I will pass the mantle to the next dwarf, as is our law, and I will step down with gladness.

-----------------
1st of Moonstone

Winter. I greet its coming with bitter rejoicing.

My Project lies incomplete.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It was a grand Project. I hoped to roof the entirety of the Cheese Slice with clearest glass, and thus create a grand chamber wherein our farmers might plant their crop, sheltered forever from the merciless rain. Now the Project lies incomplete, and the blood of dwarves stains the walls surrounding. The Project lies incomplete, and dwarves shall call it "Superdorf's Folly" in years to come.

I retire now to my barrels and my glasswork. May the dread mantle of overseer ever be far from my shoulders.

So ends the writings of 'Superdorf'.

There's one in every succession fort. That one guy who takes a relatively stable situation and sends it spiraling inexorably down into high-functioning insanity.

I... I didn't expect to be that guy.

Sorry about that.

Anyway. Here's the save, such as it is. It's all yours, pikachu!

Don’t feel too bad, is was invitable for such a fort as this. You were just very unlucky.

Oh dear. It's... a Linux thing.

This application apparently lets you open it in Windows? But give me a few minutes, I'll try to figure out to how pack this directory into a .zip file like a normal person...
