Heyas folks, getting started on a new game in the style of old pixel-style Ninja Gaiden / Castlevania games with a partner.

First look:


Planning to get gameplay and music up soon (and a website / devlog, till then watch this space or at Our Twitter ), but heres the overall gist:

Game plot is set in a dark, post-demon-apocalyptic setting, where demons have begun to overrun the world.  You will traverse thru several levels facing mythological demons and monsters typically from a Japanese setting.
Gameplay will involve mostly Ninja Gaiden style moving and slashing / item / power usage and some Castlevania elements, with some swappable characters.
Some simple cutscenes are planned as well.

Let us know what you think about the style, we've been working pretty hard trying to find a look and feel.  (Also eventually will need a full shading and color palette pass, have been shotgunning things rapidly together).

Got our first gameplay video setup, funtimes. 

Just a quick showcase of movement and some minor action, some critters, and more background stuff.
Oh, and some music.

Still need to go and hook up a bunch of sprite changes though: we reworked and consolidated a bunch of the sprites together into a single spritesheet.

Been working on some knockback effects.

Ok, but really, in the middle of actually tweaking knockback.  Want to get to a sweet spot, plus have the option to turn off knockback for casual players, sort of like Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon does.

Also, got a devlog started over at http://demon-legend.com/demon-legend-devlog-pt-2  going over some knockback references.

Is knockback a core part of classic platforming? Or is it just frustrating?

She jumps a little bit higher and runs a bit faster as well.  Working on getting her bird specials hooked up now!

Been hard at work fleshing out a new section, the waterfall!

Has some fun vertical platforming and some rock thrower mobs (and maybe a frog or two). 
Just got a bit more to finish fleshing out the level!

This looks really nice!

I find knockback to be a good mechanic for brawling games, but if there's a lot of platforming it is often just frustrating.  A lot of old Nintendo games had it but then a lot of old Nintendo games were very frustrating.

As far as knockback goes, we are going to have it in but have an 'easy mode' available where knockback just doesn't exist.

We are in the process of fleshing out our level for a playable preview, and are currently going back thru and replacing placeholder stuff, fixing bugs, adding in spawns, etc.  Trying to get there by end of this month if we can!

Just a quick little update: we have decided to expand our scope a bit and try to get a few things in for the demo as well before release, including a short intro.

Something along the lines of looking like this:


We have some various other stuff we are working on as well, like updating animations and implementing a shopping and upgrade system.

Tentatively we are going for the end of October as a release date now for our demo.  Just gotta get all this stuff finished!

Still hard at work on this, working toward Halloween demo!  Some new screenies:

A bored samurai smoking a kiseru while on the lookout for demons.


A group of trainees practicing on some targets.


Functional, quick elevator (only took a small bit of gnashing of teeth to get it working properly!).  Some additional art / style pending.


We are trying to get a few more tweaks and some background npcs in, and then getting whatever we have done by Halloween out to play (so theres going to be a release regardless!).

Happy Halloween everyone! We have a live demo now for our pre alpha!

Gameplay is about 10 to 15 minutes or so (less if you speedrun it, of course.  There is also a speedrun timer setting by the way). 
We didn't get everything we wanted into it, and theres still a few nagging bugs (notably, dashing into a hill to go under it, or analog troubles with a wonky controller plugged in overriding keyboard input / analog weirdness in general preventing pressing up to interact) but overall we are pretty proud of what we got!

I'm rendering a playthru video of it now, for those that don't have the time to play thru it currently / don't have gaming pc access, will be up by tomorrow.

I welcome all bug reports and feedback by the way, already found a few issues too!
