I wish I had this quotation from Water Margin's author available, because it's something I live by. Goes something like "If by 30 you have not married, renounce marriage entierely. If by 40 you are not comfortably seated in office, renounce a career entierely. If by 50 you are not in the papers of the Lord, renounce politics entierely"

40 is middle age. It's not old, but you won't do anything you haven't done yet, at this point.
