How do I view Dwarf attributes in game?
« on: March 15, 2019, 11:08:56 am »

Greetings, all.  Newb Dwarf Fortress player here.

I'm running v44.12 for Windows via the PeridexisErrant's Starter Pack.  I know I can easily view details on a Dwarf's attributes using Dwarf Therapist, but I can't figure out how to view them within the game.  And to be clear, I'm not talking about the actual statistical value; I just mean the general description like "Weak Strength" or whatever.  I've seen references that imply the ability to view attributes in-game in the wiki:

http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Attribute

As an example, in the wiki it says "Attributes can be viewed for individual dwarves by selecting "v" <view dwarves>, "z", "enter" or by going to the "u" <units menu>, "v" <view>, then "enter"." except that doesn't work.  Following those directions takes me to a mostly blank screen that lists Owned Objects, the option to "enter" <Thoughts and preferences>, "r" <Relationships>, "y" <Customize>.  None of menus take me to a place where I can view descriptions of Strength, Agility, etc.  The wiki states they can be viewed in Thoughts and preferences, but I see nothing but vague references there.  I'm obviously missing something but I've been in and out of these menus and have not yet seen any references to attributes.  Any help on this would be appreciated!

It's on the thoughts and preferences page, physical attributes are above the preferences, mental attributes are below the preferences, and attributes that are average aren't displayed. Also worth noting: it doesn't directly tell you the attribute level, there's flavour text, e.g. a creature with poor agility is clumsy, a creature with high analytical abilities has a good intellect, e.c.t.

Ninja'd, but whatever.

Double check the <Thoughts and preferences> screen. The game only displays attributes which are above or below the dwarven median. If it's above, it's shown in (assuming LNP default colors) dark green and if it's below, it's shown in dark red. Every statement about the attribute corresponds to a range of values of the attribute.
To show you what I mean, take this line from the <Thoughts and preferences> of one of my dwarves.

Going to the linked DF wiki page, then using Ctrl+F to find the phrase "iron will" will find one match:

The game is telling me that this dwarf has between 1750 and 1999 willpower.

Ah, okay then.  I guess I was expecting your typical list view.  Thanks!
