From whose womb did the ice come forth, and who has given birth to the frost of heaven? Job 38:29

Welcome to what I am calling Stellaris: Refuge

In this game we will tell the story of humanity fleeing a dying earth and living amongst the stars. Well, I hope so anyway. I have quite a few mods active in order to achieve the sort of gameplay I wanted for this playthrough.

If anyone would like to participate by stepping into the shoes of a character in the game, feel free to post who you'd like and, within reason, what their actions should be. There will be some roleplaying and storytelling involved so we can accommodate some things that wouldn't fit within Stellaris normally. Similarly if you'd like to write some lore or something that is fine too, I'll do my best to incorporate it. I enjoy collaborative storytelling so don't be shy.

If you don't know Stellaris well, don't worry. I'll work with you to translate what you want to do into gameplay terms and just tell you what is relevant. If there is enough interest we can even get some politics and roleplay going amongst you, but if there is little interest then I'll just keep playing slowly and annotating what happens.

Prelude

When the end came, it came so swiftly that most people didn't realize the Earth had died. Things had been getting worse for years, but the changes were so gradual that most people just got used to them. Every year the temperatures climbed a little higher, the warnings from scientists got a little more dire, but by and large the people just got on with life.

Then one day, a cold wind began blowing across the land. Everywhere it was the same, a sudden cold front sweeping across the world. Satellite imaging showed that the Gulf Stream, long the subject of worried speculation, had finally dissipated. Without that life-giving ocean current bringing warm water up from the Caribbean, weather patterns the world over were disturbed and the natural cycles of the world began to spiral out of control. Record high and low temperatures were recorded in the weeks following the barely-perceived event, and it was months before anyone connected the sudden weather phenomenon to the removal of the gulf stream. It was months more before people began to realize just how bad things were going to get, and that the point of no return had been crossed.

Even at this point, with temperatures of -50c recorded in Spain and 62c in Libya, pundits were talking about 'fixing' the planet. People adapted and kept on living their lives, remarkably little changed. Governments diverted more and more funding to crash research programs centered around esoteric topics such as weather control, better heating or cooling. Some fringe elements attempted to 'restart' the gulf stream using controlled detonation of nuclear weapons. Our every effort was roundly ignored by a planet which had already become a corpse.

It wasn't until 2185 that the subject of evacuation began to receive serious consideration. At this point about 10% of the previously inhabited landmass on the planet had been evacuated or overcome due to temperature fluctuations so extreme as to render the land barren. Spontaneous wildfires due to high temperatures had become common at the equator while the same area would flash freeze overnight. A program was devised by the governments of the world which retained spaceflight capability. In cooperation with several private entities, the human race began enacting a final desperate contingency in secret, all activity carefully screened from the public so as not to incite mass panic. They called it project Refuge.

Refuge was a disaster from the start. No nation could agree on common designs, standards of measure, or even who should contribute which resources. Due to mismanagement and bureaucratic hold-ups, it was several years before the first launch was achieved. By 2188 the first orbital construction platform had finally been constructed, and promised to put Refuge back on schedule. Most of Africa and Central America had been rendered uninhabitable at this point, countries around the world were choking on refugees fleeing the uninhabitable temperatures baking the equator. The northern latitudes had the opposite problem, facing a freeze so deep that the snows never stopped. Aside from some scattered communities, nothing had been heard from Canada in several years and by 2189 Chicago had been swallowed by the encroaching ice and snow.

Billions lay dead beneath the encroaching ice, unable or unwilling to flee. By 2192 the world's population had been reduced to an estimated 5 billion. At this point Refuge consisted of several poorly designed orbital habitats circling the sun, plastered with solar power modules and minimal amenities. Most world governments had collapsed or simply turned insular, isolating themselves from the world and busy with their own contingencies. Some attempted to burrow below the ice, moving to massive underground vaults in a desperate bid to survive. Project Refuge was now headed almost entirely by Russia, China, and the US. The project had become public at some point, unintentionally, but by this time the people of Earth were so desperate that the reaction was hope rather than panic. A global refocusing of effort on Refuge gave the huddled masses a new purpose. Most knew they would never get out in time, but they worked anyway for the hope of saving the species. Support poured in from all corners of the world which still held human life and project Refuge saw a sudden burst of activity and renewed life.

The work completed on Refuge between 2192 and 2199 outstripped any human engineering project in recorded history. By the year 2200 Refuge was a thriving community of human habitation. Over 3 million people lived and worked in space-based habitats and expansion was rapid. New technologies for solar energy collection and asteroid mining were birthed out of desperate need for resources. Importing material from Earth was tedious, costly, and entirely too inefficient to sustain Refuge's growth. Four primary habitats housed most of the population at this point:

Port Markov - Originally a russian-built habitat, Markov has been expanded into a true city and houses many of the citizens of Refuge. This has become the de-facto center of Refuge government and operational support.

Lochburn Station - The citizens of Lochburn are primarily of scottish and british nationality. The habitat has specialized itself as a foundry, developing new zero-g technologies for processing raw material and churning out large scale production of structural pieces needed to build new habitats.

Khotraat Habitat - A chinese-built habitat, Khotraat was designed as a manufacturing complex. Essentially a massive zero-g factory, this habitat turns out 95% of all consumer goods in Refuge. From toiletries to personal computers, almost everything used by the citizens of Refuge comes from Khotraat. The habitat is quite insular, not accepting of outsiders.

Yuanwei Stacks - Housing more than half of the Refuge citizens, the 'city' of Yuamwei is the primary cultural and social hub of the swarm. Most private business and social events occur here. This is also where the Reserve is maintained. The Reserve is a massive storehouse in space which serves two purposes. First, it is a huge stockpile of food. Until space-based food production matches the needs or Refuge, imported foodstuffs from earth are being used to make up the difference. The second purpose is more hopeful, a section of the Reserve has been given over to a large cryogenic storage facility where genetic samples of plants and animals from Old Earth are kept, in the hopes of one day returning and recolonizing the planet.

Five other stations exist in the swarm at this time. Two dedicated to solar power collection, two to material acquisition via asteroid mining, and one primarily given over to laboratory space in order to develop new technologies for Refuge.

It is at this point that a new governmental body is established on Refuge, much to the consternation of the still-extant governments on 'Old Earth' as it has come to be known. This body is described as a 'temporary controlling authority' and generally referred to simply as the 'refugee state'. Strict rationing is enforced on Refuge, as food imports from Earth are becoming more and more scarce. Population controls are similarly draconian, as Refuge can barely afford to house and feed the citizens it has while more refugees arrive daily, evacuated from Earth on launches that never stop.

The first year

2200, January 1st - A general election among the citizens of Refuge has resulted in the election of Mikhail Markov to position of Presiding Speaker. While the government is a temporary one, it brings hope to many that they have a say in the selection of their leader and the policies of Refuge. Temporary rationing and other security measures remain in force for the foreseeable future.

On February 13th, 2200 a transmission was received at Port Markov. The transmission was text-only, and the sender did not identify itself but the transmission bore the communications code of a US-based source. The transmission was just a document, entitled The Ulysses Initiative. It described a US-based secret project enacted some time in the past where a 'wormhole' or some sort of gravitational anomaly had been detected at the edge of the Sol system. Under the Ulysses initiative the US had embarked upon a project to study the anomaly and determine a way to transit it. In 2087 the US managed to successfully transit an unmanned probe through the anomaly. It sent back images of an unknown solar system including an alien planet which may be capable of supporting life. According to the document, several 'ark ships' were constructed and transited the anomaly in the hopes of colonizing the planet. None of these ships were ever heard from again.

The project files include blueprints for a drive system which can successfully transit the anomaly. Study is underway in the Refuge laboratories. Lochburn is confident they could build these ships, given time and materials. The focus for now must remain on the needs of Refuge and the incoming citizens of Old Earth, but in the future this may offer us an alternative. We must pursue this.

On 2200, June 14th, at 12:37 Refuge Standard Time all contact was lost with the former United States government. Orbital imaging suggests that a massive 'polar vortex' of unprecedented ferocity has blanketed north america as far down as northern Texas in dozens of meters of snow and icefall. The icefall continues for three weeks. Survivors are deemed unlikely, and Refuge had no way to aid them in any case.

2200, August 2nd, 02:06 RST - A nuclear detonation is detected in Vladivostok. Concurrent detonations occured in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and seven other major Russian cities. A radio message is received, heavily garbled by interference from the nuclear detonations.

"To our brothers and sisters [unintelligible] Refuge. We [unintelligible] and we salute you. We have chosen [unintelligible] end it swiftly, with fire. Be brave. Carry on. Godspeed."

38 subsequent detonations were detected across the russian landscape, areas that Refuge did not know still housed living people.

Year Two & Three

2201, July 1st - Incoming refugees have thinned out to only a handful a week. Several launch sites are still manned on Old Earth but it is feared that there will not be many more survivors reaching them. Speaker Markov has declared that the beacons and launch site will remain active until 2210 to guide in any stragglers who are able to make it out. Orbital imaging shows no movement on Earth's surface, what little of the surface can be seen. Most of the world is covered by near-permanent cloud cover and ice.

2201, September 26th - Lochburn announced that they have completed work on the first mobile construction platform. The HRS Yangtze. This construction vessel will assist Refuge in exploiting the material resources of the solar system.

2202, January 5th - The first baby has been born on Refuge! Named Xīwŕng, the healthy baby girl has become something of a sensation, and a symbol of hope for the people. This event coincides with a darker story, also released today. A scientific study of the effects of zero-g life on the human body. Many Refuge citizens are adapting well to the conditions of life in space, but it is feared that these adaptations will make it difficult or impossible to return to planetary life should the opportunity arise. Already we are seeing large scale changes in the bodies of the very young, lower bone density and stunted muscle growth. Some fear for the future of humanity.

2202, February 2nd - The Yangtze has completed work on a gas siphon in orbit of Jupiter. This will allow material and energy to be extracted from the planet, aiding Refuge's strained resources. The vessel is now headed out to a deep-system intercept with 136472 Makemake, a kuiper belt object known to be rich in minerals desperately needed by the Refuge citizens. A mineral extraction based will be constructed on its surface, and a similar installation will be built on 136108 Haumea. Mining operations have also commenced in the rings of Saturn, bringing ice and construction material back to Refuge.

2202, February 26th - Lochburn has turned out another ship, this one dedicated to scientific exploration. Named the HRS Sojourner, and commanded by Mikhail Antonov, the Sojourner will lead the search for the lost ark ships built under the Ulysses initiative and prepares to transit one of the gravitational anomalies at the edge of the system. Refinement of the Ulysses sensor systems have determined at least four distinct anomalies within the Sol system. If the project findings are correct, each of these is a 'gateway' to another solar system. Sojourner is setting out to transit UA-04, which has been determined to be the most stable of the four.

2202, May 3rd - Sojourner, after a 4 month journey to the edge of the system, has engaged its Ulysses drive system. Communications are spotty, as there is an unknown distortion in the carrier wave.

Captain Antonov: "The craft is ..brating… … see someth… … ome sort of halo around the vessel I cannot… it's tearing apa…"

Spoiler: Deep Space Imagery (click to show/hide)

Contact was lost at 2207 hours RST. The Sojourner's mission is to perform a survey of the system, if one is reached, and then attempt a return through the anomaly. It will redock with Lochburn station for damage assessment and mission evaluation at that time.

2202.08.21 - A new standardized calendar and date format has been voted into use. The most common argument was that the old months and days mattered little, so Refuge has standardized on a 30 day 'month' with 12 months in a 'year' making one year 360 days. As such all future entries will be in this format.

Also on this date the Yangtze reports both kuiper belt extraction operations are up and running. She has been retasked to establish an outer-system research base around Neptune's moon Triton.

Which mods?
Oh, a bunch. The main one here is Dyson Swarm - https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1624127196&searchtext=dyson+swarm

Allows you to build a dyson swarm of stations around a star, upgrading the swarm over time. It also includes the start I used, where your home planet becomes a tomb world and after 10 years becomes a frozen hellscape with the option to eventually restore it.

Year 4/5

2203.03.24 - A daring rescue op has concluded in the evacuation of several hundred thousand people after a weak signal was detected by a tracking station in orbit of Old Earth. Several convoys of refugees had taken shelter in the abandoned frozen ruins of a Jamaican city. Speaker Markov immediately dispatched several teams in orbit-to-ground craft to search the area. The survivors have been located and are being returned to Refuge. Although the housing situation within Refuge is dire, these new brothers and sisters have been welcomed. We must all live together if we are to survive.

Due to crippling energy shortages and widespread brownouts, Lochburn has been tasked with building a new solar collection station.

2203.11.02 - The Sojourner has returned!

Captain Antonov: "Refuge Control this is Sojourner actual. Am transmitting data now. Ulysses drive was unqualified success, but a bit bumpy! *loud laughter in the background* Officers in need of medical assistance, nothing critical. The ship as well, is a bit shaken up I think. We are proceeding to Lochburn for debriefing. It was wonderful, control! I have seen another sun!"

The Sojourner's databanks show us pictures of an alien sun, a class M red giant with two large gas giants and a number of small worlds. Initial indicators reveal nothing habitable, and no sign of the Ulysses arks. With this navigational data we may be able to further refine our use of the U-drive.

Refuge, despite its fragile situation, is in celebration. For the first time in history, a human has traveled faster than light and returned with images of a distant star.

2204.02.18
HRS Sojourner has been dispatched through UA-02 to determine what is on the other side. The Ulysses labs have been pouring over navigational data recovered from several more databases on Old Earth and believe one of the arks transited this specific anomaly in search of new habitable planets.

2204.11.08
HRS Yangtze has finished construction of a resupply base within the system beyond UA-04, which has been named Sieagawa by a polling of Refuge citizens, winning narrowly over "Starry McStarFace". Yangtze will remain on station to establish mining operations within the gas giant rings and moons of Sieagawa I.

Yeah nothing really special but a great test of an unknown drive system, and it will provide much needed minerals and energy. I picked that one because it had no follow-on jumps, just a safe little dead-end to start mining.

Years 6 & 7

2205.01.13
A proposal has been tabled before the citizenry for establishing a permanent presence on Luna, Earth's moon. This base would serve both to keep an eye on Old Earth and to provide a dirtside location for humans. Even Luna's low gravity is better for human physiology than null gravity, especially for developing young who have difficulty adapting to even low gravity after having grown up in zero-g. Speaker Markov is said to be considering the possibility very strongly. Sources inside the council have rumored that an expedition is already being constructed.

2205.03.17
The Sojourner has sent back long range telemetry and sensor data on the Procyon system.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

While there are no indications of habitable planets, Captain Antonov has reported 'unusual heat signatures' on Procyon III and is moving to investigate as part of the overall survey. Interestingly, we have, for the first time, discovered a system with other UA points which, presumably, lead to further systems. While the scientific community has many theories about what these UA points are and how they work, the public has taken to calling them 'hyperlanes' after some old science fiction epic and the name has stuck. Procyon has two hyperlanes leading away. With further data we may be able to refine our understanding of these phenomenon and predict their occurrence.

2205.07.24
HRS Sojourner has sent back a startling communique, Captain Antonov has found the remains of structures upon Procyon III! While most of them are still ruined, some are still active and emitting heat signatures. He is preparing a small surface expedition to examine the ruins in detail. This is a monumental discovery if true, and could mean we are not alone in the galaxy. Speculation is running rampant among the citizens, perhaps this is some disused scientific base or communications outpost? Maybe we can make contact with those who built it and request aid? Speaker Markov urges caution but has authorized a full scientific expedition and instructed Lochburn to construct a second ship to expand our surveying program.

2206.01.18
The following image was taken from a near-solar observation platform at 11:35 RST today.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It is believed that the object on the left is a ship carrying volunteers and scientific equipment to Luna in order to establish a small outpost. The proposal tabled early last year called for a much larger expenditure of resources but perhaps this is just the first stage of a full scale colonization effort. Speaker Markov declined to comment at this time.

2206.01.23
Captain Antonov has completed his survey of the ruins and portions of his report have been released to the public.

"We have analyzed all available data within the alien structures, and yes they are structures built by alien methods, no human could have designed these. It would appear that this was a sort of deep-time archive, perhaps a records depot. Much of the data structure was degraded and preliminary analysis indicates that the site is over 500,000 years old, perhaps older. While we do not know the names of those who built this, we do know what they look like from ideograms found at the site. They were six limbed, most probably mammalian. Unfortunately the data is quite grim. We cannot yet translate the text of the records but visual records suggest some sort of plague swept through their star-spanning civilization. It is likely that most or all of them perished from this illness."

2206.03.08
Having concluded the initial survey, the Sojourner has moved on from Procyon and entered one of the two unknown hyperlanes. Initial reports are somewhat confused as a time-dilation effect seems to have garbled most of the transmission the ship sent when first emerging. Later reports clarify the reason, Captain Antonov had emerged within the gravitational influence of a black hole. He reports that the crew is well, but they were forced to modify the transmitter to compensate for interference from close proximity to the object. There appear to be no other nearby celestial bodies, only the black hole and a small accretion disk which may once have been a star. Antonov will survey the object and then depart.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

2206.04.01
Lochburn reports completion on the HRS Von Braun, which will be commanded by Alexei Krutov. This ship will depart through another of the unexplored hyperlanes from Sol. Its primary purpose is to locate colonizable worlds, or potential resources for Refuge.

Also in the news, crime has begun to rise on Refuge. While the first few years were peaceful as everyone was just happy to have escaped the disaster on Earth, there is no escaping human nature. Crime is up 17% in the last year and continuing to rise. Speaker Markov has launched a new anti-crime program empowering Refuge enforcement divisions with wider discretionary powers and authority. He released the following statement earlier today:

"People of Refuge, this is unacceptable. We stand amidst the greatest achievement in Human history, the Refuge swarm, and now more than ever we must consider each other as brother and sister. It is vital to the survival of our race that we cooperate and avoid the selfish bickering and infighting which led to the destruction of Old Earth. I have, today, instituted a new program whereby Enforcement divisions within Refuge may detain and question any citizen thought to be not acting in the best interests of Refuge. Crime of any sort will be harshly punished. We must be strong, for a Human future. For the good of us all."

2206.08.05
Sojourner has entered Kharasta system and sent back an initial report. Captain Antonov has picked up a navigational beacon which uses human frequencies and may date back to the time of the Ulysses initiative! He has begun a search of the system and is hopeful that he may be able to locate one of the arks, or at least narrow down the search.

The beacon is in orbit of Kharasta VI, an airless world of little interest otherwise. Analysis of the data is ongoing.

Neat! It is fun to see Stellaris played out in narrative form. I get so used to just breezing through the early game I rarely think about the narrative happening during that time.

Glad you are enjoying it! Feel free to participate at any point too if you want, but I'm happy people are liking the story so far. I've been taking it slow, playing on normal speed when I have time to advance the story and then doing updates every few years.

The end of the first decade

2207.02.30
The Coriaria, one of the ancient Ulysses arks, has been located. Unfortunately it appears the automated ship suffered some kind of navigational failure. Its wreckage has been located on Kharasta VI, spread across 8 kilometers of the world's surface. There can be no survivors.

Captain Antonov is sweeping the site for any information which may be of use. A detail has been sent down to bury the dead.

2207.03.02
Antonov reports that some colonists did indeed survive the initial crash. He has found a section of the ship which remained sealed after the impact, and evidence of rudimentary attempts to restore life support and even start a small hydroponics garden. Unfortunately the resources available to these brave souls were too few and they perished on the cold airless world.

Some navigational logs were recovered indicating that a sister ship may have avoided the incident which brought down the Coriaria and continued its voyage.

2207.06.07
Antonov has discovered other structure on Kharasta VI perhaps related to the crash of the Coriaria. They are some sort of large monoliths standing upright from the surface of the world, emitting electromagnetic radiation in the upper bands. This emission could have interfered with the ancient guidance systems in use on the Coriaria, though the Sojourner's systems are safe as they are much  more advanced.. Antonov is investigating the purpose and origin of these structures. It would appear that Space is much more interesting than anyone had previously thought, and much more dangerous.

2207.08.10
Nuclear fusion has long been a dream of humanity. Today that dream has been achieved. Working in secret for the past 5 years, a chinese firm on Khotraat has completed the first working Fusion generator and has publicly released the plans in a grand gesture, "for the future of humanity". This proof of concept fusion plant, now called the Situ Fusion Plant (or SFP) after lead scientist Qing Situ, can output 50 megawatts but could be scaled up or down to power anything from ships to habitats.

2207.10.27
Captain Antonov has concluded his study of the monoliths on Kharasta VI. While their purpose is not obvious, he was able to determine a way to shut down the field being emitted by them. Once shut down, the structures cooled slowly and went quiet. Their power source, a remote solar collection station, has also shut down and folded itself away. We may gain some scientific insights from further study, but Sojourner is moving on to fulfil its primary mandate of locating any remaining Ulysses arks.

A wave of xenophilic interest is sweeping Refuge in the wake of this latest alien find, and 3 new science fiction epics featuring alien races have been release this week alone.

2208.06.23
Another discovery by the Sojourner, Antonov reports scarring and debris on the surface of Kharasta IV which fit no known natural pattern. From orbit the massive rifts in the surface almost look like writing. Sojourner is remaining in-system to catalogue and study.

2208.10.02
The anomaly on Kharasta IV turned out to be exactly that, writing. A powerful laser of some sort, in the range of gigawatt output, was used some 5000 years ago to carve a large body of writing into the surface of the planet. The script covers most of the planet's surface. Further study will be needed to translate it. So far it does not match the text samples taken from the site on Procyon, and the difference in time span suggests this may be a different race of aliens.

2209.04.12
It is a bleak day. Today marks the evacuation and shutdown of the final refugee terminals on Earth. No survivors have been found in years, and conditions are only getting worse on the surface. The final teams have been recalled. Today we say goodbye to Old Earth, possible for all time.

Speaker Markov has announced that the drastic food rationing measures put in place nearly a decade ago will end soon, in remembrance of our lost brothers and sisters. Refuge will dedicate itself to a Human future, no matter the cost.

2210.01.01
Speaker Markov has declared this day a day of remembrance. The shuttles from earth have docked. The facilities shut down remotely. Supplies were left in place, although badly needed on Refuge, in the hopes that someone left on Old Earth may find and use them. As far as we know, no survivors exist but it is at least theoretically possible that some of the vast underground vaults may weather this new ice age.

The promised transition period has expired and general elections have begun to select a new Presiding Speaker for Refuge.

Speaker Markov has announced the cessation of mandatory food rationing, effective January 4th. The temporary restriction of freedoms imposed by the evacuation have also been lifted, allowing people to move freely when and where they wish. All population control measures have been similarly suspended, effective on the 4th.

Ooh, really have to look at that last picture.

Isn't it time for a name that is somewhat more upbeat than "The Human Refugee State"?

You are no longer Refugees, but rather Citizens of the Stars themselves!

2210.04.02
In a landslide election win, Mikhail Markov has been re-elected as Presiding Speaker for Refuge. As his first official act he has put forth a resolution to rename the Human Refugee State to something more fitting.

"No longer are we refugees, for the stars themselves are our home. This resolution will be open for one year and any citizen may submit names for consideration. At the end of this, all citizens may vote upon the new names."

Also in the news, the mysterious death of renowned scientist Marko Kreutzwald has shocked Refuge. While murders have occured in the past, this killing seems politically motivated. Details have not yet been released officially by Refuge enforcement, but an anonymous source described the scene as 'gruesome'.

A recent census of Refuge citizens has been completed. 5,633,458 people live and work in Refuge. Since the evacuation completed, Refuge has expanded several times to include the construction of a new dedicated agricultural station which uses a combination of soil based and hydroponic farming to produce the food needed. The foodstuffs in the Reserve will run out soon, so this new agricultural station is vital to the future of Refuge. Today the agridomes and hydroponics stacks employ almost 500,000 people and at peak efficiency can meet the nutritional needs of the entire swarm as it is today. This method of food production is costly and inefficient, but it is all we have.

2210.12.13
The last of the foodstuffs from the Reserve have been depleted. We have repurposed the empty bays as new housing stacks for the growing population on Refuge and have shifted to our agriculture station for all nutritional needs.

Captain Antonov, currently surveying the Nostea system, reports something strange about the star's emission patterns. Specifically that a routine pattern-analysis program flagged the emission spectrum of the star as a 'highly ordered' phenomenon. Closer analysis of the star has revealed nothing, no pattern was found. It could be a simple glitch in the pattern matching algorithms but analysis of the sensor data at the time of the flag are inconclusive. Antonov is still investigating but has gone on record as saying he personally believes it was nothing, the report was simply filed as required by regulations.

2211.08.05
Additional details about the killing of Marko Kreutzwald have surfaced. There are rumors that the killing was linked to Dr. Kreutzwald's history as a climate-change denier back on Old Earth. Kreutzwald had since recanted this obviously erroneous opinion, but there are many on Refuge who harbor deep resentment against those who had the opportunity to address the artificial climate change brought on by rapid industrialization and simply did nothing, or worse actively prevented groups from taking action.

Deliberation was protracted and votes were tallied several times before a winner emerged. By the authority of the people, the nation is no longer known as the Human Refugee State. From today onwards we will be known as the Children of the Sun. This change will impact every level of our fragile government, and is seeing large political pressures both for and against.

Alongside this announcement, political candidate Guy Moreau has been elected as Governor of Refuge. Now that the remit of the COS is expanding beyond the solar system, Speaker Markov has delegated responsibilities of local governance to an elected official. Governor Moreau will oversee all logistical and bureaucratic operations within the Sol system.

SSV Sojourner reported in today with yet another monumental discover. As if the finding of ancient structures and Ulysses arks weren't enough, Cpt. Antonov has sent back images of a new stellar phenomenon. Initial reports indicate that this may be one side of a stable einstein rosen bridge, better known in science fiction as a "wormhole". Our current understanding of the physical and quantum universe does not even allow for such a construct, but we now have indisputable proof that they can exist. It is unknown where the wormhole may lead. Theoretically the other end could be anchored anywhere in space and/or time but the tidal and gravitic stresses would rip apart any ship attempting transit. Indeed several popular theories indicate that transit would be impossible as such could violate causality and is thus not allowed under the physical laws of the universe. Of course the same was said for FTL travel and we have a working FTL engine, so who knows what discoveries await us in the future.

A new story is circulating the news networks, a previously unknown terrorist group has emerged and taken credit for the killing of Kreutzwald and 3 other prominent Old Earth politicians and scientists.

Calling themselves "The Vengeance of Gaia" they have released the following manifesto, delivered by an individual known only as "Gene" in a distorted pirate broadcast today:

Long have our brothers and sisters suffered.
Long have we fought for what was right.
At one time, we were powerless in our struggle.
Now, after the death of Gaia, we have returned to power.

This is the Manifesto of the Vengeance of Gaia.

Once, we had fruits, plucked from fields; sweet, now they have turned artificial; plucked in a place where the gods did not intend. Bittersweet, so to say.

Such is our vengeance. We have risen, and the people that doomed Gaia, will be doomed by us.

Chilling words. The VOG are the first major political group to arise on Refuge and Enforcement is scrambling to track down the source of the broadcast.

Reports have arrived from SSV Von Braun, commanded by Cpt. Krutov. Investigating some anomalous readings within the asteroid belt of Nomotar, Krutov has stumbled upon the fossilized remains of a gargantuan gastropod frozen inside an icy body. The creature is frozen in what is described as an "expression of horror, or extreme distress… as if shouting" by Cpt. Krutov. He has extracted a DNA sample of the organism but reports that there is no possibility of unearthing the being at present.

Disturbing news indeed. Let us hope these dissidents can't cause too much harm.
