Try to mod intelligent wilderness creatures, help please

So basically I'm trying to mod the game so that my Animal person adventurer can make trophies out of his fallen enemies. I've never modded DF before so I want to make sure I'm on the right track before screwing something up. I've been trying to locate the ETHICS for animal people, but can only find ETHICS for subterranean humanoids (which is just copied from Kobolds). So I've been looking at c_variation_default.txt which seems to be how animal people are generated. If I change this:

Won't work. Surface level animal people have no civilization, though they will join other civs on occasion. Subterranean animal people have their own set of rules.

Also, adventurers have their own set of rules that have nothing to do with the civ they come from, as illogical as it is. Even elf adventurers will not butcher sapients.

Ethics are entity tokens, not creature tokens, so that wouldn't work even if they did have a civ.

You can't make trophies out of fallen sentient enemies in this game, period.
Edit: ooops forgot that months matter in determining whether to post, not just years
