Late Autumn.

It is currently the 19th of Timber. Winter will be upon us soon, but fortunately, we have become sufficiently freeze-proof. Stocks are high, and the book I read recently was, quite interesting as I had thought.

But I digress. I have managed to obtain the position of overseer, or as it is called here, duck caretaker.

I have a few plans for my time here in Warbirds. First off, I have taken a good look at the fortress as a whole, and we dwarves are well off.

But the ducks!

They are ignorant! They do not have the pleasure that is a higher discussion! They do not know how to read! My first order as the caretaker is to have bookshelves constructed at once.

Yes, some ducks do reside with us in the library, but they simply oversee our study and do not join. This is a travesty! It must change.

It looks like literacy isn’t its own tag, but [INTELLIGENT] is, which should allow for the ducks to have thought and feelings as well as read. You’d just have to add that tag along with the other ones near the top of the duck’s entry in the creature_domestic raws, but it may have unforeseen consequences. You should back up a save and do some testing.

Duck literacy is a noble goal if I ever heard one, so it's definitely worth a try! However, in my (extremely limited) modding experience, changing the raws after world-gen is usually a bad idea, for a variety of reasons including that lots of raws-specific data is already baked into the world.sav.

I wonder if you'd have better luck adding an intelligent duck race from scratch, then introducing that population as visitors who can petition for citizenship?

If nothing else, I suppose you can scribe a million copies of the book and cover every duck-accessible surface with reading material!

In other news, I think I was able to modify the raws to allow the ducks to read, write, and learn. They also should have thoughts now. Should make games more !!fun!!, I think  ;)
EDIT: like I thought, currently existing ducks do not have any tags that I added. This is because the ones that currently exist are unique creatures. New ducks, however, such as chicks and imported ducks should have the new tags. If not, no loss because I'm still going to waste all the adamantite on bookcases and nobody can stop me.

I promise this wasn't on purpose, I really tried to not mine any 4x4 squares out.
I'll just wall off the main staircase if I can. If I can't, well, we have a bunch of war ducks and a military of 9 dwarves.

Edit 2: OH GOD THEY GOT TO THE DUCKS
Edit 3: okay, things have calmed down. Everyone is left in the hospital, and the remaining ducks are smart enough to not go near the clowns. 9 people are left and are all in the hospital, including the doctor.
I think it's confident to say the non-military ducks are safe.
SuperDuck is also okay.
Should I just load up the old save again?
Or should my turn just be over?
or is the fort over?
EDIT 4: of corse. Hopefully, he can bring the clowns some !!fun!!

What are the livestocks ? 9 dorfs ? How many birds ?
Is duck-zilla alive ?

If you feel like the fort is playable, keep it going I'd say.

Now I really regret not modifying the save to turn all the clowns into duck clowns. I was trying to keep dfhackery to a minimum.

Reload, or reclaim? Once the building destroyers start serious flooding, it might be an FPS nightmare, even on a small map.
