If you're short on ducks, I bet there's a place to find plenty more perfectly normal ducks.

Official records of Ukerlanlar - 'Wavebirds'
By Duck secretary èzum

Following his appointment, the duckverseer went straight to work implementing Icy Teas orders. Set up defences and add bedrooms in the lower levels.

Although I personally wonder if the original plans called for wooden walls - but I guess the builders were in a bit of a hurry with the duckverseer quacking them on day and most of the night.

At least the walls were slightly higher than minimum, a 'lip' was also ordered to prevent climbing would-be invaders.

"Quack quack quack. Quack!"

"What do you mean I can't write personal notes in the official records?"

"Quack!"

"I write what I damn well please!"

"Quack. Quack quack."

"Fine, I'll use another title." Huh, I guess he can read.

[The document suddenly has a new title, the previous section ending abruptly]

I'm not sure what enemies we even have. Who can hate a duck anyway? Even the elves came here to admire our ducks. They said it was to trade. And we did trade. 2 bone crafts for all the food. So I'm pretty sure that was not the reason they came.

The duckverseer made us dig a well, tapping water from the river. I must say it is a very useful addition to the fort. I hope the other changes he brings will be in the same spirit.

Some efficiency enhancers were also made. The smelters now have dedicated stockpiles - so that the smeltery workers don't have to go fetch the ores themselves from the mines. The farm has a dedicated seed stockpile right next to it.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Some migrants were assigned to the militia. The duckverseer didn't care if they had no experience or anything. "They'll get the experience they need" the duckverseer said - or quacked I guess. Not sure what he meant though.

Next was digging of cassiterite - it seems this drake knows a bit or two about metals.

"Quack quack!"

"This meeting is now in session" - translates the CMD for the duck-talk-deficient in the room.

"Quack quack quack."

"Straight to the point eh? More digging."

"Quack!"

"I don't understand that."

"Quack quack. Quack."

"Gold? Dig more gold? But what does microcline have to do with it?"

"Quack!"

I start to realize where this is heading..

"Gold like microcline? I don't know of.. any.. ore like that...."

"QUACK QUACK!"

"Meeting adjourned. Best get to digging you lot."

Oh god.

In addition to making all of the clowns into duck-based forms, you should also add [ADOPTS_OWNER] to all ducks, and add Ducks to the liked preference list of all dwarves.

I just tried my first drawing of a duck just now. At work.

I have no idea WHY I did that. I just had to.
I guess this is the power of this fort. Making people love these little feathered buddies.

I followed a tutorial because I suck at drawing.
How to draw ducks for noobies

My duck (I need to improve, maybe I'll try 3d modelling ducks. That'd be better) :

Also that picture has been 'retouched' a bit (with eraser and pencil).

I find it a lot easier to work with pencil which you can both erase and smudge. But I'm no artist - as I'm sure you've noticed by now.

Grabbed the save ! Time to duck !

-----------------

On this rainy spring day, the quackverseer waddled into my room, followed by the duck-secretary. He quacked at me :

"Qwack ! Quack quack quack. Quack ?"

Tears went to my eyes ! I was overwhelmed with joy and pride ! I agreed immediatly !

The duck-secretary wrote something on a piece of reed, I signed it, and the deal was done.
The two drakes waddled away.

I couldn't believe it.
I had just been appointed Duckcare Inspector of the fortress of WaveBird !

------

Hello !
My name is Sprig. I'm a dwarf. But unlike many others, I have a special trait.

Can you spot it ?

Yes that's it.

I have an irrationnal love for ducks !

I just don't know why. I can't help it. I just have a passion for the little buggers !

Maybe it's their cute little eyes !
Maybe the sound of the quacks they make ! Maybe the way they waddle around...
Maybe it's the fact they are so round, and feathered, and seem so soft ! Ducks are so cool, and they can even fly ! and....

Listen... I just love ducks. Okay ?

---

I guess this is why the duckverseer appointed me to this holy mission.
I'm now the duckcare inspector.

My mission is to make sure ducks are treated the way they should.
Ducks must not lack anything. The duckverseer counts on me.

Time to inspect the place !

Duck Fortress: Quacking around
« Reply #69 on: June 26, 2019, 04:55:08 am »

Fortress review time !
---------------------

I'm excited ! Today's a big day !
It's time for me to scout our fort and see how my feathered friends feel.
I'm expecting freshwater ponds with quacky duckies in it :)
I want to feel joy and see sassy critters waddling around !
I'm excited ! :)

Let us review the accomodations !

----

First there is the outside. I can see the Mighty Duck Statue near the ocean. That's very good !

Ducks are roaming freely under the cloudy Spring. They are well protected by sturdy walls.
Very good very good.

Hoo ho ! A closer inspection shows that many of them are trained warriors.

Perfect ! They will protect the nest from intruders then.
The other ducks can waddle peacefully, knowing the war drakes protect them.

---

Below that, we have what appears to be some dwarven quarters. They are kept to a minimal size.
I guess the slaves... I mean the dwarves, have been granted the right to sleep in personnal quarters.

This should leave more room for ducks. Very good very good.

But... Where are the ducks though ?

I can hear many quacks from here, but I don't see my little friends.
It sounds like there are many more ducks somewhere.

Quacking intensifies as I approach the stairs...

----

I venture downstairs, and was exposed to this VISION OF HORROR !

NOOOO WAAAAY !
WHAT WERE YOUR DWARVES THINKG OF ??!!

Look at all the ducks crowded into there !!!
They don't have any air to breathe !
They don't have any pond to swin in !
They won't ever see the sunlight nor feel the wind !

This is unacceptable.

---

IS THAT IT ?!!

Is that what the mighty duck fortress is ?!!
Is that all we've got ? Two empty rooms, a handful of nest boxes and a tiny duck statue ?

I swear, by Duckmok, the drakes deserve so much more than that !

I'm pissed off so much....

---

...

---

After regrouping myself, I resume the inspection, but what I see is too much for me to handle !

The ducks' well-being has clearly been neglicted here... In profit for the dwarves.

All I see is dwarven luxury...

Like ! Seriously !!! Who is this self-claimed "Mayor" who owns a whole layer for himself ?!!

Why doesn't our mighty duckverseer have his personnal quackers, I mean quarters ?

---

I end the inspection there.
I can't handle more of this absurdity.

We created a fortress for DUCKS, not dwarves !
I start understanding why I got appointed.

It is time things change.
It will be for the best.
I have a lot of work to do...

Also that duck statue was a bit of a bitch to put together. Ended up drafting it in Minecraft of all things.
Turns out that blocks are taller then wide in Armok Vision - so it didn't even end up looking the same. Is there an official height to a grid square in DF?

Know what? Sign me up for a turn.

It would be hilarious if we switch ducks and dwarfs in their roles; ducks become workers/leaders, dwarves become pets.

Uh.....why won't one construct an adamantine statue of a certain duck?
P.S sign me up for a turn
@applet there is no specified height for a single tile, and this is the reason why quantum stockpiles function.

This fortress is a wonderful idea.

FYI, from the last save, you are winning the duck population contest. The next highest population of domesticated ducks is only 19 ducks. 2nd place is a tie between Wirestern, a hillock with The Key of Equity and Tickedlanterns, a hillock with The Rack of Faith. (I was mostly checking if there was such a thing as a Giant Duck in the game raws. Sadly, there is not.)

I really want to be on the turn list for this one, but I don't think I can be trusted with this kind of responsibility along with the inevitable minecart shenanigans.
