How do I release animals in stolen cages

So I murdered the elven traders at my trade depot and then removed the trade depot to claim the items the elves brought. They had some animals in cages that I also claimed but I can't do anything with them, when I press "q" they don't get highlighted, as if they weren't mine. Please halp

Bumber:
You have to build them first. Built a cage, then select it as the material.

You might also be able to directly assign the animals to a pasture without building the cage.
