Bio: House Chevalier had never been among the most respected, formidable nor the wealthiest of the Angeborten nobility. Founded only a century ago shortly after the seven years war, it wasn't even that old either. Even their elevation to the aristocracy had been nothing but an afterthought, a pittance given to a farm boy turned rabble rouser who'd helped foreign conquerors make war on his own king. They were the butt of most every joke among the older houses, called upstarts, glorified pig wranglers, pardoned cutthroats, and all manner of other unsavory titles.
And yet, House Chevalier somehow had pride that rivaled all of them. The type of pride that can only be felt by a peasant who had grown ill content with his place in the world and carved out a better one for his descendants with a sword. For it's founder, Mercadier, having created a better future for his descendants than the past he had known was enough. But for his sons, being a minor noble family was not enough. Spurned and mocked by greater houses their whole lives, they were determined that they would take what their father had acheived and elevate the Chavelier name to even greater heights; vowing to never rest until their fledgling house became one of the greatest in the land. And it is to that end that the sons, all their sons, and their sons' sons would labor and toil relentlessly.
And it was this very ambition, passed down from father to son generation after generation, which would eventually crumble the foundations of House Chevalier. A myriad of bad investments, overly ambitious manuevering, and (at times) sheer ill luck would see both the wealth and the numbers of the Chevalier blood lined drained nearly dry by the birth of Pierre Jean-Baptiste Chevalier. Last lord the house would ever know. And the only Chevalier left alive, thus saddling him with the entirety of the debt from his forefathers. And whatever curse had brought the family so low as well, according to some of the common folk.
It was into these dire straights that Odette was born. Her house and any inheritance she might have crumpling, her father driven near mad by the pressure of constant debt collectors. Pierre might've loved her as she deserved, had her sickly mother not have perished giving her life. But with her mother's blood staining her hands (as far as he cared at least) all she ever got was resentment. Most of her father's waking hours were spent fending off all manner of creditors eager to collect and vultures and charlatans eager to kick them while he was down. With neither the patience nor the emotional capacity left to deal with a little girl, at the best of times Odette found herself virtually ignored by him. At the worst, she learned the meaning of wrath. Years passed like that. Odette haunting the disrepaired manor grounds and trying her best to avoid her father and his dealings, and the stream of people looking to take away what little they'd held onto growing with every season. Some who visited the estate would see her, lurking just out of immediate sight, running away at any attempt to engage with her and followed by small motes of light as she did. Some, hearing stories of the Chevalier curse, assumed her to simply be a ghost. For with such a storied history as that clan, surely there must be skeletons in every closet.
One day however, Pierre Jean-Baptiste left the manor, headed to negotiate with one of the creditors. Odette never saw him again, after he walked out of the old oak doors and into the night. She was 11 by then, old enough to begin understanding their lot in this life, but nowhere near old enough to understand her father. Pierre Jean-Baptiste was discovered dead in some ditch a week later. Some say it was an accident. Others say one of his creditors got tired of his excuses and decided to collect what was owed in blood, if not in coin. Either way, many of the creditors took the opportunity to swoop in and liquidate any and all assets the House had left to recoup at least a small sum of their money. In a harsher society, Odette might've been made into a virtual slave to pay back everything her father still owed. In Angeborten however, the church of the Seven Sisters dominated, and it was one of their many sisters who happened upon the shady estate proceedings and intervened as the vultures debated what to do with the girl. Thus, Odette soon found herself in one of the many orphanages of the church.
She gave no end of trouble to the nuns and sisters. Withdrawn, listless, and combative to a fault with seemingly no conscience to speak of. Some of the children, the dumber ones, mocked her. Most of them though, were afraid of her. Everything came to it's climax during one incident where one of her regular bullies ended up blinded by a searing light... and it became apparent to her caretakers that all this time, Odette had been harboring some form of magic potential. The other children were more terrified than ever... but one nun saw it as an opportunity. A path to save the soul of this wayward child, so filled with wrath and darkness. Within a few days, Odette was gone from the orphanage... and placed into the care of one Sister Marcel Maret. An inquisitor and defender of the faith, tasked with breaking the girl down and teaching her how to control both her raw emotions and her abilities, all for the purpose of someday molding her into a instrument of divine will and a living weapon to defend the faithful and drive out evil in all it's many forms, like her master before her.
Today, the foundations of the instrument she will become are now laid firmly. Though still not ready for the full responsibilities of the inquisition, she was nevertheless deemed fit to enforce the church's will.
And the church's current will it seems, is to see Consort Van der Dergen deposed and the old order restored.
