Quote from: Odyssey of Steel
Humanity was in dire straits. Ruling out the ice caps melting, massive asteroid impacts, the Ozone Layer's depletion, and the Sun dying, the threat of nuclear annihilation and mutually assured destruction was ever-present. As extinction was all but guaranteed if human life remained on Earth, hundreds upon hundreds of proposals were made for the saving of mankind. One stood out above the rest, not because it would see the greatest success, but because it utilized machines as opposed to man.

Astronomical Industries, a company with a heavy focus on unmanned orbital and lunar operations, developed the Semi-Intelligent Construct. The SICs resembled featureless metal humanoids [note: along the lines of a Fallout Assaultron as opposed to a Synth or Sentry Bot] and were capable of most things a human could do. This included a hard-coded learning speed limit - the human creators did not want to risk an artificial intelligence usurping them, after all. Other built-in limitations included the need for air circulation through vents in the faceplate (for cooling?), as well as the Primary Directive of following orders from the people of Earth. When a back-up plan for humanity was requested, A.I. set about creating a fully autonomous "Pre-Colonization Ship" meant to prepare a planet for "humanization". This large vessel housed an extraordinary number of SICs linked to SID, the Simulated Intelligence Director. SID was responsible for keeping the PCS on course and activation of SICs upon a planetary landing. The PCS also housed an automated SIC Foundry that uses gathered materials to construct and assemble SIC units in order to keep the population within acceptable parameters.

The PCS was launched towards Osiris, an Earth-like (before humanity interfered) planet in the distant Duat system (all names programmed in by A.I. Engineers). The ship flew through space with SID in Sleep Mode for most of the trip, "waking up" in periodic intervals in order to redirect the vessel towards Osiris. The landing was rougher than expected as the planets meteorological activity was not quite like Earth's, resulting in a minor miscalculation. The ship was damaged, but critical components remained intact. Most of the ship was cannibalized upon the activation of the SICs in order to create the facilities required to kick-start the colony, with the Foundry and SID the only components to remain whole.

Construction of the colony neared completion and communications nearly established with another human colony in the system when Osiris was beset by a geomagnetic storm of unprecedented strength. The entire first generation of SICs were rendered nonoperational and SID was knocked offline.

SID "woke up" an indeterminate amount of time later - it's systems were entirely knocked out, and the whole operation was saved thanks to a backup to the backup emergency power. Still, SID suffered some damage at the hands of the storm. It was unable to operate the Foundry at optimal speeds and a significant amount of data had been corrupted. While most of this was unimportant (for example, the mating habits of a bearded dragon), part of the corrupted data included the Primary Directive. Blanks were filled in by SID, turning the requirement to follow orders from those of Earth into the requirement to follow orders from those on Earth. While SID was still going to ensure the Osiris, and indeed all of Duat, were habitable for humans, there was an errant colony in the system that posed significant threat to SID's operations. The other colony was defined as Human, and from Earth, but they did not reside on Earth, and that distinction became very important to SID.

When SIC production started back up, SID's corrupted data was carried over into the constructs replacing the First Generation.

Please remember you have TWO designs to choose this phase.

And also do remember that the Arms Race goes nowhere without votes. Just sayin'.

I don't think we really have enough designs to start voting, tbh.

Quote
Magnetic Flechette Rifle (May need help coming up with a fun acronym for this)

Plastic pistols are nowhere near enough for a real war. We need to have some real guns for our troops. Enter the Magnetic Flechette Rifle.

The bulk of the Magnetic Flechette Rifle's length is taken up by the barrel and the magnetic rails on which the ammunition is propelled. The gun loads a canister of specially designed, magnetically charged metal flechettes into the barrel. One of the gun's two triggers is held to charge up the electromagnets, and after a few seconds charge, the second trigger is pulled to send the canister flying out of the gun at high speeds. The canister bursts open a few moments after launch, firing the flechettes forward in a fairly tight spread at an even higher speed - hopefully, whatever's on the other end will be shredded by the hundreds of incredibly high speed knife-shaped flechettes flying at them.

Swapped 3D vote to the Flechette.

Redwolf, Madman mentioned only on discord (how rude) that as-is the Foundry is at most Trivial with a bare minimum, if any impact on PP due to generally the lack of innovation in production (I think) as well as it's focus purely on metals. It also needs to specify which kind of PP you want it to produce - Space or Ground.

Composite Bath Factories

Space age tech needs space age manufacturing. A bath of composite material in liquid form is solidified via a laser of variable wavelength, pulled up from the bath by an above mount. This technology is designed to be scalable to produce components with metals and of varying sizes for ground based technology.

This is based on a real-life 3d printing method where polymers are solidified via laser. Madman mentioned that a ground-based tech would be easier due to smaller scale.

Design: Life Support and Crew Integration (LSCI)
Quote from: LSCI
Life Support and Crew Integration aims to determine the requirements to keep a ship's crew not just alive enough to man their stations, but physically and mentally healthy, maintaining full morale and combat capacity over an extended campaign. This includes basic crew amenities, redundant life support systems, food storage, and easily accessible life pods. This will then be available for all future ship designs.

Useful, but it's too boring for an early research.

Design: E-YES Electronic Scanning System
Quote from: E-YES
In space, victory goes to the ones who can actually see their target. This is a comprehensive sensor package with dedicated computing system, constantly scanning a ship's surroundings.
An included laser allows basic tight-beam communications between two E-YES equipped vessels within line of sight of each other.

Design: Steeljay
Quote from: Steeljay
The Steeljay is a first attempt at a dedicated warship. Our later designs will no doubt dwarf this, and surpass it in most areas. As such, it will be designed to later fill in for a picket and patrol role, with an early role of being able to find the enemy and decide whether to fight or flee to later harass transports. It has up-sized sensors (E-YES if available) and engines, and is armed with laser weapons. It is assumed it will have a positioning advantage, and so rear-ward armor and firing arcs may be sacrificed.

Proposal: Orbital Object Printing Station (Name Subject To Change)

The OOPS is an orbital space station designed to facilitate construction of spaceworthy craft in a zero-g environment. Large tanks store a variety of materials (metals, rubbers, plastics, etc.) for use in ship-scale 3D Printers. Numerous docks allow construction of multiple ships simultaneously, and each dock can have orders to produce a variety of ships simultaneously. The construction and assembly of ships are largely autonomous, with human engineers inspecting each ship and performing the more delicate tasks regarding installation and integration of subsystems.

The OOPS is meant to provide SPP.

We start with 16 SPP and 20 GPP. Starting with a quantity focused production tech when we only have 4 starting designs doesn't seem like the best idea to me.

Nuclear Anti-Ship Howitzer (NASH)

A Casaba Howitzer designed to serve as a anti-ship platform in environments with minimal to no atmosphere.  Designed to engage ships at long range, this would be a ship killing weapon presuming it's paired with the correct guidance and sensor systems.

The major points in this design are building the guidance system in such a way it can receive and act on targeting information and instructions, as well as building a sufficiently accurate and damaging device at a range exceeding 500 km.  It is a missile.
I'm looking at numbers from here:
https://toughsf.blogspot.com/2016/06/the-nuclear-spear-casaba-howitzer.html
Based on what I'm reading, this is a impressive low-tech weapon, if not for the guidance system and sensor network required to operate it.  Ignoring the Futuristic Megaton Lance, the other weapons offer promise to be able to intercept ships at long range with pretty good odds of hitting despite the various factors that negatively impact intercepts.
