Search the room and see if the darkness was protecting something.

Not as such, no.  A lot of patterned surfaces, with grooves and ridges and platforms cut into them.  Small piles of rock dust of various sizes.  A few odd bits of glowing mold, spreading over the rock bits in some cases.  There is also a nice seam of coal down here, but nothing worth hauling up for valuables.

And plenty of tiny offshoot passages where whatever-was-in-the-dark fled.

From here, not really.  They're too small for you to get through, although one might be big enough for Venom Whelp Trence to squeeze through.  There was one more room to explore from the last split, the upwards spiral.

The spiral climb opens up into a room full of gossamer stone; a large gallery draped in encrustations and thin strands of rock.  They look somewhat delicate, but being made of stone, are still quite solid and hard.

It runs well into the distance, and there are multiple branches.  Nothing immediately catches your eye, but you're getting pretty far from base camp to just explore these on a whim.  The route isn't tight, but there's a lot of squeezing, turning around, climbing up, and easing oneself down to get past all these barriers and blocks and curtains and shells..

..From camp, you go over the Giant Stairs, through the long, narrow Empty Fissure, past Base Camp, through what was the Dancing Darkness, then through the Long Defile, into the large Mica Cave.  After that you go up the spiral climb and into this huge, slow gallery.  It's quite a long march.
