RCBD/S Rayleigh Confederation Battle Dress/Standard
Our current uniforms are somewhat lacking in utility , so we've made several changes. Firstly, we've made three new camouflage patterns, Snow, forest, and desert. Secondly, We've created a modular webbing vest, currently this mostly provides ammo and grenade storage, but in the future it will store whatever auxiliary equipment we make. Next, we have a steel helmet in the East German style, only notable for it's camo covers. and finally, we've made polarized sunglasses standard issue.

While attempting to increase the range on the BFR, inspiration struck: what if we were to make a grenade out of our plasma tech to get around the issue of effective range? The launcher in question is a fairly standard spigot thing on the front of a rifle barrel, a specialized sight, and a gas cutoff to keep the gun from automatically cycling afterwards. To launch a rifle grenade, you load a specialized blank round into the gun, rest the buttstock against the ground, and fire the damned thing as a ghetto mortar at whatever you want to die horribly. It's awfully anachronistic, but it seems to get the point across.

(notes: Doctrinally, these are to be handed out to dedicated grenadiers instead of everybody and their mother having one, though we could expand to that if cost permits)
Normal (1+5)+0 = 6 (Buggy Mess)
Many safety overrides were overridden, and many limiters were ignored. That doesn't mean this doesn't work - nay, the grenades work great. They explode in a hot fiery mess of blue and purple energy, and lots of presumably ultraviolet and upwards, too. Anyone nearby when one explodes gets an unhealthy dose of radiations that cause instant sickness, with anyone in the blast radius starting to vomit immediately and suffering full body burns; anyone further away still suffers some, and we've included radiation pills to reduce the effects in our grenadiers' kits.

It's just that the launcher doesn't have the firing power expected, and the grenades are prone to go off when jostled too hard; the grenades were much weightier than anticipated, and the launcher rounds didn't include enough explosive force to propel the grenade to a safe distance - still much farther than a thrown grenade, but even in optimal wind conditions, a grenadier is likely to be within the "guaranteed ARS" zone, suffering between 3 and 6 Gy of radiation. As for the detonation mechanism, someone forgot to list how it's set off in their report, and it was found they have an impact detonator; useful for missiles, but when set down too hard, or when facing the wrong direction in the launcher, they can be set off prematurely, very easily.

We've decided to keep the number of grenadiers low - mostly because we can't get many volunteers, and it takes a lot of training to safely handle a PRG. And a good portion of the ones we have keep mishandling them and sending themselves to the morgue.

They cost 2 Ore and 2 Oil, making them Expensive for now.

Very Easy (1+5)+2 = 8 (Below Average)

We couldn't have done worse if we'd tried, and for some reason some of the design team are proud of that. In all honestly, the new uniforms aren't bad. Moderately tight, but they blend into their surroundings for anywhere we've encountered well enough. The helmets only come in two sizes for whatever reason, but those sizes are both somewhat large and they can be padded out with the currently unused camouflage covers while wearing the third to make them fit. Some soldiers complain about the webbing vest cutting off circulation, but medical tests reveal they're exaggerating - it's tight, it's not that tight, and there are better fitting vests available to them, they just wear the too-small vests because they match the uniform size labels. And it does it's job, holding anything that we could clip onto it; many soldier have kept to keeping their keys on them, and carrying parts of the Fear and Loathing kit on it.

The sunglasses work too. We can even make them prescription. But, like most of the kit, it's slightly ill fitting, the proportions being miscommunicated to the manufacturers; with 60% of the glasses being hand made still, we still don't have the mass production to correct this fault in every set we deploy. Still, wearing a pair and staring directly at the sun doesn't immediately blind you - you'd have to stare for several minutes before it really got to you.

We've greatly improved crew survivability when using the plasma warhead by adding a secondary inertial fuze that activates the contact fuze. Thusly, preventing accidental discharge. it can also be broken down into several pieces, allowing a 3-man crew to transport it quite easily

APESHIT, or the Accelerated Programme for Engineering, South Harmon Institute of Technology, is a programme designed to jumpstart Rayleigh's industrial development by pooling technical knowledge from surviving engineers, rebuilding a functional industrial base to actually make shit, and passing on knowledge of how to be an engineer to the next generation before all of our engineers die of old age, in that order. Surviving machine tools and other equipment was brought together and set up in the warehouses next to the campus, and through the combined efforts of engineers and machinists working out of the South Harmon Institute of Technology, the APESHIT program more-or-less recreated all the infrastructure needed to make modern technology in limited quantities.

Trivial (2+2)+3 = 7 (Poor Performance)
The M11 works, and that's not the best thing we have to say about it this time. It's bigger than expected, much bigger than 80mm, moving from light weaponry into artillery; it's closer to 200mm. We achieved decent range, and have almost completely stopped the accidental detonation of plasma shells prematurely by adding an inertial fuze before the contact fuze. We've used the same system in the other ammo types too. We still have to be careful transporting them, as too quick a drop can set off the inertial fuze, but that only happens when they fall off of a very tall shelf, or some lazy soldier chucks them out the window instead of hauling them down the stairs. And the inertial fuzes can be reset if the contact fuze still fails to fire.

Range is decent. We can fire to long range, and the firing arc is fantastically high. But, accuracy leaves much to be desired, with troops hoping to hit something valuable instead of being able to consistently aim at a spot - the practice grounds are pockmarked and scarred, with only a single shell having struck the 200 meter diameter target. The wild winds up high play havoc with the trajectory, and residual heat from launching the shell makes it visible enough that enemy troops theoretically have quite a bit of time to avoid or intercept it; they take nearly a minute from launch to strike, with a regular launch. A second, medium range propellant charge is available and can be swapped with the regular charge, which has slightly more accuracy and less time from launch to landing, but as implied by it's name, has much reduced range.

The High Explosives warhead functions nominally - transport troops feel a little unease at the yields, especially when hauling them great vertical distances, but explosions harming our troops have been limited to one casualty so far. Much, much better than the PRG. Speaking of, the new Plasma warheads, being upscaled, have our troops wetting their pants. Crew training has improved, and not one of the new warheads has been dropped, but test fires indicate if the initial explosion doesn't kill the nearby plantlife, then the residual radiation will kill it in months or a couple years. The unstable explosion is exponentially bigger with the increased size - to avoid radiation sickness, it's advised these aren't used at medium range, despite being reassured that the radiation shouldn't reach that far.

The smoke ammo didn't work out. We wanted to expel large clouds of gasses into the air to obscure vision, but they wound up igniting from friction heat being aerosolised. It resulted in a stationary flamethrower, usually belching it's jet of flame straight into the ground underneath where it landed. This did stay hot and on fire for many hours, so if we had a way of saturating an area with them, they would be effective area denial, but a smoke screen they are not. The incendiary shell project wound up getting merged with the smoke shell, due to time constraints, upping the volatility of the chemicals it sprayed out.

The star shell is probably the least destructive, even considering the incendiary/smoke shell. It's purpose is to scatter brightly burning "shrapnel" that illuminates the area around them, so we went with an aluminum and phosphorus compound for the stars, which last for a moderate amount of time, burning a pale pink and casting white smoke into the air for their light to reflect off of. The payload that scatters these on impact is compressed inert gasses and the same compound used in the HE shell, just less of it; much less. You would have to throw yourself on top of the star shell to be upgraded from treatable injury to casualty - let's not get ourselves wrong, the explosion is definitely enough to rupture the gas chamber and throw the stars a very commendable distance, but it has to be small enough not to obliterate them too.

Break down and redeployment is about how it was expected. Three men can carry the parts between them, and a couple of shells each, or a full crate of shells if they each take a corner. The parts can be clipped to the RCBD/S webbing and not be too much of a strain, which leaves a soldier's hands free for either carrying shells or another weapon.

All in all, an effective weapon, if we could just get the darn thing to hit where we aimed it. Much better than the PRG. It costs 3 Ore, 2 Oil, making it Expensive.

Easy (6+6)+1 = 13 (Above Average)
Remodeling the South-Harmon Institute of Technology as a industrial base wasn't so hard - people were surprised that the building actually existed, as several important someones had assumed that reports that this building was within Rayleigh's borders were a joke, and when they were shown it in person and toured around the campus they were - initially - flabbergasted. Despite the very informal way the school had been run on Earth, it had actually started to become a respectful school with a leading edge in engineering; for those who knew that it was not just a fictional location out of an old movie, at least.

In it's new location, the machining shop got expanded, the recreational areas were... left in tact, nobody could bring themselves to tear down the old skateboard halfpipe. But the classrooms were improved with scavenged, and eventually new, monitors and smart boards. It's computers were scoured for any information from Earth left behind, and the records were surprisingly intact - somebody had downloaded most of wikiindex.org; about twenty five thousand pages of links to wikis that couldn't be accessed due to the wikis linked from the index not being downloaded. But several other documents, from useful math textbooks, to slightly more useful engineering texts and various classic literature; it's a lot to sift through, but with time we have all we need to train future generations.

The school's headmaster and several students abducted from Earth gleefully help with remodeling, as space was cleared for warehouses and industrial spaces, and tools were brought from around the city to make a stable work environment with enough redundancies to replace anything that breaks quickly. And the relaxed atmosphere helps keeps nerves from fraying.

This is a great place to jumpstart research into lost technology from home, and to break free of strict Earthly ideology.

the technical know-how and manufacturing capabilities we've gained from A.P.E.S.H.I.T. have rendered the RCBD/S somewhat inadequate, so we set out to fix that. Firstly, we've rectified our complete lack of body armor with the "Achilles" armor vest, a Kevlar/UHMWPE vest with ceramic inserts providing it with level IV armor protection for the chest and groin and kevlar/UHMWPE inserts elsewhere, and the optional "Paris" non-vital armor, Kevlar/UHMWPE sleeves, greaves and cuisses, as well as replacing the old helmet with a ceramic one with Kevlar/UHMWPE camo covers. Secondly, we've added winter clothing, a camouflaged long coat, gloves, and a balaclava, and desert clothing, just a lighter version of our current uniform with a camo jacket for the cold desert nights and a light bandanna to protect against the sun and sand. Thirdly, we've resized all the old equipment that's not obsolete. Fourth and finally, we've added a simple angle-head flashlight, it's has red light filters and can be both attached to our webbing and hooked up to pulse pistol batteries for effectively unlimited power.

3. Improved aerodynamics. This is exactly what it sounds like. Less drag and better design equals longer range and better accuracy for both the rifle grenade and the mortar.
4. Improved carriage system for the mortar. By making the carriage for the mortar more stable, we can tighten up the dispersion pattern, making it easier to actually ht shit with this thing.
5. Breech-loading mechanism for the mortar. Since it's already acting like a heavy artillery piece with that size, we might as well lean into that role and make it something that can get a higher rate of fire. This makes it heavier, yes, but it should still be infantry-portable if we manage to break it down into even more pieces for transport.

The reasoning behind this is quite intuitive: nobody really bothers to think about why their electric lights turn on when the flip a switch or how the food in the grocery store actually gets there, so long as it does. Some places had people getting impaled by structural members appearing out of nowhere and penthouse suites finding themselves six feet underground because somebody fucked up and tried to teleport two things to the same spot.

They also managed to send a few city blocks from East Germany forty years into the future, which caused quite a bit of confusion because those same city blocks circa 2019 were also teleported in.

Those that did make it through in one piece found themselves completely cut off from their supply chains. Power plants weren’t going to get more fuel than what they had on hand, people dependent on prescription drugs were basically living on borrowed time, everybody was going to starve once the supermarkets (and Walmart) ran out of food, and nobody was getting spare parts. One might argue that, given the context, the bastards that got impaled by an I-beam appearing out of nowhere got the better bargain.

As it turns out, New Stechkin came from an alternate America where Project Plowshare actually got somewhere and everybody was using specialized nuclear warheads for infrastructure projects. Nuclear line charges were used to carve out a trio of massive irrigation canals, which formed the start of A group of car thieves in the county jail that got brought along for the ride were recruited by the city of Rayleigh as a means of appropriating various abandoned pickup trucks and utility vehicles, which were then modified to be more useful on a field. Coupled with some success in taming local wildlife for use in planting crops, Rayleigh managed to get enough food production by the second year to keep everybody fed. Still sucks for the former white-collar workers who suddenly found themselves working a field despite having a college degree, but it’s better than starving.

Geography of place of origin:
  • Herstal’s from an AU America where the Netherlands dipped their feet into colonizing the new world more than they did IRL, functionally they’re from a reskinned version of uptown NY with some minor cultural differences.
  • Zastava and New Stechkin are cities in an AU Wisconsin that received an influx of Eastern Europeans during the early 20th century. These are the guys with some petrochem plants still running and a steel mill that’s went out of business in the mid 80s. Otherwise they’re mostly normal parts of the US but with more Polish cooking.
  • Ingram comes from an AU where the war of 1812 went a lot better and we somehow nabbed Quebec, only for that to cause problems down the line and turn the Civil War into a three-way with the Union versus the Confederacy and the Quebecois running off to do their own thing in the ensuing chaos. Enter very obnoxious French Canadians from an AU version of Montreal with a flair for brutalist architecture.
  • South Harmon: Small college town in Connecticut that tries its best to be a knockoff Cambridge.
  • Springfield is, until further notice, a fully functional city that somehow also manages to be a parody of itself. It’s got a few rather exaggerated personalities but somehow it doesn’t get in the way of their being a functional city.
  • Griefswald: Two and a half city blocks of East Germany, plus a nuclear plant. They are just as confused as we are.
These are the “constituent governments” that get a seat in the Rayleigh Senate. The last one’s basically two city blocks and a power plant, but the power plant’s a pretty fucking big deal so they get a seat dispite basically being the plant and the guys who work there.

Politics and culture:
  • Defense and internal security are taken care of collectively and everybody works together on improving infrastructure, but to avoid conflict between culturally disparate places a lot of day-to-day things are left to the locals, though police units are tightly meshed and share jurisdiction.
  • Because of the “shit’s fucked” situation, culturally Rayleigh has an ethos best described as “everybody’s pretty live-and-left-live so long as you’re pulling your weight as part of the team.” Nobody’s got the time to get their knickers in a bunch about microaggressions or cultural incompatibilities when everybody’s busy working together to unfuck the situation.
