Storing Sujium in some sort of viscous liquid will probably help with... well, safe storage. Also yeah, that two-layer system sounds like a good idea for the bullets.

An idea for Sujium storage.


Oobleck Storage Crates
Sujium is a material with many possibilities, for example: if one could keep its force from increasing too much it could be used to create perpetual motion. However, there is one major down-side to Sujium. Simply put, it requires a large amount of power to store, transport, and work safely. This project aims to help mitigate this flaw, by devising a method of safely storing and transporting both Sujium and Sujium-based equipment.

The basis in this plan, is something that was actually devised on earth. Corn starch dissolved in water, otherwise known as oobleck. Oobleck is a Non-Newtonian fluid, meaning that its viscosity increases the more force and/or stress is applied to it. By filling special crates(triple layered, an inner solid layer, an outer solid layer, and a middle layer of padding to reduce shock) with oobleck, it will make it so that the faster the sujium is moving, the more drag is applied to it by the oobleck. Therefor reducing the force of the Sujium down to, if not zero, than at least a level that is safe for human handling.

This will not stop Sujium that is already moving at dangerous speeds, rather it is meant to stop it from getting there in the first place. At least until we actually want it to do so.

After setup for a prototype farming operation, we had to figure out to do with the stuff. Silicalisk leather "Sleather" is only slightly stiffer than normal animal leather, and has the resistance of kevlar and nomex. The first product of this monument to industrial inability and animal cruelty is the Grade Light Infantry Armor, a vest with inserts for ceramic plates. In lieu of a modern helmet, Grade L armor features what could be best described as a colander with some Sleather on the exterior. This instrument is known among the designers as "MIld STeel Armored Cover Equipment" or "MISTACE".

One of the designers appears to have come down with a case of humor.

How concerning.

Bugs or not, I like that our rifles have some personality. And it also strikes me that the OBC is a significantly less complicated system as the Safety-Efficiency Upgrade, for effectively the same thing.

Honestly, this is the only revision I'm feeling so far; the AK10 is good enough, its flaws do not warrant fixing, and the others.... I don't really have an opinion on.

Well, if nobody else is going to put up a proposal I might as well vote.
Also, as much as I like the idea for a weapon harness for our animals that was proposed on the Discord, I feel like we should dedicate a design to that so that we can also make heavy weapons to attach to it.

Dear god, how the Silicalisks stank. On that front, being a Dragoon did nothing but further his revulsion. Perhaps, he thought, once the bastards to the west were all gone, he could take a bath. Sadly, for the Dragoon to have any hope of ever having one again, he'd have to keep riding the smelly, stony beast that even now was under him.

A shout cuts through the malodorous air. "Charge!", shouts the Sergeant. So the suited Dragoon digs his spiked boots into the Silicalisk's sides, feeling the jolt through his saddle as the braying beast breaks into a sprint. He tucks his body tight against the Silicalisk's asbestos mane, in a maneuver meant to protect him from gunfire.

The Sergeant, somewhere to his right, shouts out another order. "Draw weapons!" The Dragoon removes his hands from the stiff reins, reaching to his back to draw the subtly humming hammer. One hand on the trigger, one hand on the haft.

"Stand!" comes the ragged voice of his Sergeant, and the Dragoon breathes in sharply. He pushes up from the awkwardly-shaped stirrups, standing up atop the snorting Silicalisk, and sees the rest of his formation rising to position, sledgehammers held facing forwards.

"LEAP!", says the Sergeant, and so the Dragoon pulls the trigger of his sledgehammer. Immediately, his stomach drops and his nose is filled with the tingling of ozone, and the man is pulled from his saddle through the air. He hits the sand in a roll, quickly coming to stand up and swing against a practice target: a stack of cinderblocks.

With a whistling cry, his hammer strikes home and the stand-in soldier is turned into dusty rubble. Ahead, the Dragoon can see his Silicalisk mount screeching to a halt, swinging around with a powerful tailstrike knocking down another dummy target as the animal unsheathes its claws. Around him, many others are doing the same.

Practice maneuvers. For all this, he better get that damn bath someday.

Sometimes they create simple structures with it, using their specialized claws to shape the sand, other times they coat their bodies in it to add an extra layer of armor. This hardened sand is, obviously, nowhere near as sturdy as their own shells, it would not offer much more protection than a similarly thick wall of sandbags(minus the spilling), but the ability to erect fortifications quickly with little material is quite useful.

The main cost sink when it comes to the crabs is that their bodies are not really sized or shaped in such a way to be easily ridden. As such, special saddles need to be made to allow our soldiers to ride on and guide them successfully. Their size however, allows these saddles to be made large enough to fit several people, and in the future, it is likely they will be good for carrying heavy weaponry that would otherwise need to be stationary, or mounted on a vehicle.

Skinning a living creature alive would have been truly abhorrent back on earth. But to a silicalisk, removing their whole hide is not at all like skinning a Terran creature - it's more like shearing a sheep, except it reveals their muscles and exposed tendons and bones. Oh, it's possible to cut a bit too deep and nick something important, likely breaking a vein or severing a muscle; but a skilled worker can avoid that happening ninety nine times out of a hundred. And even unskilled labor can work the torso area without risking any lasting harm to the silicalisk. As long as part of it's hide remains, and we usually leave the skin on it's head untouched, it can regrow anything we cut off of it with a steady diet including at least some metals.

The harvested hides of the silicalisk, once tanned similarly to how leathers on Earth were tanned, is flexible enough but not too much. Sleather is a durable material, if gained in an unusual fashion in a way that would make certain people upset, and makes quality armor. At least able to stand up to modern earth equivalents. We've made new uniform vests out of it with internal pockets for ceramic plates, which are at least easy - getting stones and minerals for forming quality clayware is the easiest thing we do. OK, maybe modern ceramics, especially armor ceramics, are a bit more complicated than making a vase, but we make a quality armor-grade ceramic. The uniform also has a Sleather shirt and pants, made not quite as stiff as the vest during the tanning process, and a helmet.

Somebody made a joke when doing the paperwork for patenting the helmets. MISTACE does do it's job as a helmet, but in what might be a new Sujian tradition, they were found out and made to do battle in a gladiator pit vs wild beasts. Their clever use of the MISTACE by re purposing it from being a helmet to a shield, and then to a gag, and then to a jawbreaker, allowed them to fell the beast they were pitted against; they live to do clerk work for another day. An arm down, maybe, but they can learn to do paperwork left handed.

A big issue in harvesting Sujium may be that once it's no longer embedded in something, there's very little resistance to stop it from just accelerating off into the sky, presumably to be lost as it propels itself out of the atmosphere, or burns up in the air. It can be shut down with controlled energy, but storing too much of it can easily eat up all your power. We keep the REEE from draining too much power by locking it down tightly with steel clamps when the batteries aren't connected - but the raw Sujium ore and even the processed cores don't have the luxury of being easily locked down.

Until we realized that if the air still pushes back on it to slow it down, then while it's unrestricted by Newton's Third Law, nothing it interacts with is. And if whenever it pushed on something, it got pushed back... well, that would repel it in the other direction, usually, if the material were to push with just as much strength as the Sujium could. But if something were to be able to put variable quantities of force into it, not pushing quite as hard but not ever weak enough to just let the Sujium pass right through like air does, it could effectively contain the Sujium indefinitely without using power.

Enter non-newtonian fluids. If Sujium doesn't want to play by Newton's rules, neither shall we. Sure, we're breaking the law of viscosity, a feat we have done billions of times over on Earth, while Sujium breaks his laws of momentum which had previously been unbroken, but it still counts dammit. Oobleck, which was considered a child's toy, is the perfect storage medium.

Whenever Sujium is disturbed, it accelerates rapidly in the direction it was pushed. When it tries moving through Oobleck, though, this increases the apparent viscosity of the fluid, and increases the friction pushing the Sujium back greatly; And while this means it starts moving in the other direction, as long as the Oobleck is not made too thick it will be moving slower than it was, which means when the storage medium resists the new direction of movement, it will be pushed back even gentler.

As a result of packing a crate with Oobleck, and giving it a soft padding layer and putting that in another slightly larger crate, is that we have a safe way of transporting Sujium to where it can be used. When the crate is moved, the Sujium inside will be agitated and start vibrating, but that's about all it can do in it's starchy prison. Thus the padded layer to keep it from vibrating a handler's arms to pieces.

It's still recommended to let an Oobleck Storage Crate rest for a couple hours after transport - if opened, disturbed Sujium could still have enough energy to come shooting out of it like a bullet and pierce someone's brain. And even after it's safe to open, one must be very careful removing the Sujium from the crates. A modified cookie baller or ice cream scoop that shuts air tight around chunks of Sujium with some quantity of Oobleck can extract it, and move it to where it's needed to be worked, but much Sujium is still lost by improper handling after delivery and getting Oobleck into sensitive machinery or into the hot forges of refineries can cause nasty smells.

It's good enough to transport Sujium long distances, and improve how much we're able to use from any given mining site. This gives 2 unit of transport capacity useful only for Sujium, and lets us harvest 1 Sujium extra from far reaching mines right now.

Proposal: Supply, Infantry, and Logistics Transport (SILT) Strider

The Strider is a large, docile, extremely simple alien creature that vaguely resembles a huge sea louse with very long legs. The Strider is completely covered in shell save for it's eyes, mouth, and sphinctery bits. The first hunters to take down a Strider noted two things: a) they were extremely difficult to kill, and b) they were extremely disappointing. The large shell body was actually largely hollow and instead provided space for incubation of hard-shelled eggs and limited shelter for hatched young. The space inside the Strider's cavity is lined in a firm fibrous tissue with no nerve endings to speak of. Thanks to the need to lug around a bunch of eggs and babies, the legs of the Strider are strong enough to carry a significant amount of extra weight. A generous portion of brain and nervous tissue is exposed within the cavity closer to the front of the Strider.

All this has led to our use of them as transport vehicles known as SILT Striders. The Bedouin is able to dictate the direction the SILT Strider travels in by manipulating exposed nerves in the brain that control locomotion. Full control of the creature's movements allows the SILT Strider to lay against the ground to facilitate loading and unloading. A section of carapace in front of the Bedouin is replaced with bullet-resistant glass so they can see where they're going without needing to be fully exposed. 

A large portion of the rear carapace is removed, hinged, and replaced to allow ease of access for soldiers and materials without compromising protection. Hydraulic hinges make this a relatively easy task and can be activated both from the Bedouin's seat as well as within the cargo cavity. Atop the carapace, more forward on the Strider, is a rotating turret that currently houses a pair of angry dudes with guns wishing we had equipment designed for the task to put there..

The SILT Strider is large enough to carry a section of 20 soldiers and their equipment comfortably. They are very slow, but their hard shell and ability to carry whatever we cram into their carapace has proven to be a huge benefit to our people since we first utilized them.

Proposal: Helioraptor

The Helioraptor is a nimble, agile, fast creature with a hide similar to, but thinner and more pliable than, the Silicalisk. The Helioraptor is bipedal with two small arms at the torso and a thick tail to provide balance while sprinting, as these creatures often do. The feet and hands of the Helioraptor end in nasty claws capable of disemboweling a man in a single swipe, and it's mouth is lined with razor-sharp teeth. The Helioraptor's saliva is slightly acidic, though it cannot spit as the Silicalisk does. This is because the Helioraptor only supplements it's diet with stone and sand. This creature seemingly evolved with a taste for the most abundant of resources: sunlight. A patch of vibrant scales atop the head absorbs sunlight, which is then processed by the Helioraptor in a way that is reminiscent of photosynthesis in plants. Helioraptors will bask when "feeding", laying on the warm desert sands while the sun beats down upon their heads.

Helioraptors are protective of their pack, which is defined to them by those who are present at birth, and as they grow expands to include those that care for them as well as their kin. Helioraptor teeth and claws are naturally refined for combat and capable of tearing through even a Silicalisk's hide with relative ease. These are not hunting implements, they're meant for killing - it's not the diet of rocks and sunlight that needs to be stalked and taken down.

Helioraptors proved to be a menace after our initial displacement, but after a number of nests were discovered and the eggs (similar to geodes, save for being filled with amniotic fluid and a Helioraptor embryo) hatched around human observers we were able to begin the process of training and breeding Helioraptors as we deem necessary.

Helioraptors see use in our military forces as fast attack cavalry, giving a single rider the ability to rapidly traverse terrain while also being able to support an attack once dismounted. A Heliobeast is highly protective of it's rider, and will act to ensure their safety. This includes attacking approaching threats as well as removing an injured rider from danger. Riders don't use a bit and reins to guide the Helioraptor, and instead command the beasts with physical guidance (a heel knocking onto their side, for instance) as well as whistles and clicks that loosely resemble the sounds Helioraptors use to communicate.

Finally, the proposal we've been waiting for. Kind of.

Proposal: Mining Utility Levitating Excavator (uses Alien Credit) (maybe research credit too, but we can vote on that)

Who- or whatever occupied these deserts before The Displacement was keen on pulling resources and materials from the desiccated lands we now inhabit. Or, at least, it's been made to look that way. Littering the Dunescape, and one of the few things that saved us from early demise, are a number of abandoned mining facilities. As with the REEE, we were able to study and scavenge a number of mining vehicles left abandoned and time-worn, and have been able to repurpose them for our needs in the inevitable Water Wars. (How dare they suggest trade for as vital a resource as water? That's extortion!)

The MULE, as far as we can tell, was designed to hover over the sand and utilized a pair of large manipulable arms with a variety of detachable ends (scoops, borers, etc.) to uncover and extract materials practically at the surface and store them in it's open-topped cargo hold. The effectiveness of the MULE at it's designated purpose must have been great, as a number of strip mining operations have been discovered absolutely littered with the vehicles.

Our experimentation shows most of the "magic" happens in the engine and propulsion system, and therefore these parts are the only parts that remain unchanged (and are the focus of this proposal). The engine is a miracle in and of itself, capable of running on a combination of standard liquid fuel (oil) as well as flammable minerals (ore) or, in desperate, cases biomass. Water (and urine) can also be used in extreme circumstances, but are much less potent than other fuel sources. One just need to fill the fuel hatch with what they have on-hand and the engine breaks it down into workable energy.

The engine converts fuel into electrical energy used to provide power to the bottom plate of the MULE. This plate provides stable vertical lift as well as the ability to move horizontally. It is important to note that the MULE always maintains a steady consistent distance over the surface based on driver inputs, with additional weight automatically compensated for by the engine-plate assembly.

The MULE we field is slightly different from the ones we've scavenged though. For one, we've removed everything from the frame save for the engine, plate, and a single arm (using a hook or claw to load/unload goods). Instead of trying to maintain every single vehicle to perfect standards, we've bolted on whatever armor we have available on hand and give the crews (driver, engineer, passenger-gunman) free reign on vehicle upkeep. The cargo area (similar in appearance to a dump truck) has had small less-than-comfortable metal seats for up to twelve fully armed and armored Freemen soldiers. The seats are little more than small plates jutting from the sides of the interior of the cargo area so as to minimize impact on actual cargo capacity. Another six hand- and footholds are present around the exterior of the MULE to allow extra cargo to be hooked on or let a few extra people catch a ride in the open air. A canvas-like top can be thrown over the cargo area to protect the interior from the elements.

While the MULEs may not be the most consistent in regard to defensiveness, they're largely meant for use as fast transport for men and material and not for outright combat.

Observer's Note: Crews of MULEs tend to take an extreme level of pride in their vehicles. Each one has a name and, as many can attest to, personality of their own.

Okay so there's something that needs some explanation in the proposal: the fuel sources.

With so much ore and so little oil (for now, the MULE may change that a little) I figured I'd try to spread the potential oil cost out a little bit. The use of scrap and salvage for armoring not only fits with the Mad Max theme we've neglected, but may also drop ore cost to balance out the fuel thing.

Also, as stated, the engine and levitation are the key focuses of the design. The MULE itself may suffer from this somewhat, but it may give us a pretty solid foundation to build harder, better, faster, stronger vehicles in the future.

Design:Shattershell Grenade
The Shattershell is nothing special really. It's a grenade, plain and simple. A small, hand-holdable casing filled with explosives is the main payload of the weapon. The pin holds the striker lever in place> when the pin is pulled, the spring loaded striker is let loose, allowing it to ignite the percussion cap, which starts a small fuse, that ends in the detonator exploding, and thus exploding the rest of the payload. Additionally, the casing is segmented and perforated, this means that when the payload explodes, the shell shatters more evenly, launching shrapnel in all directions at deadly speeds. From what we remember from Earth, grenades tend to go well with mounted forces.


Let's have us some Silicalisk Grenadiers.
