There are seven other tunnels off this long one. Each has a hatch at a downturn. There is a sound of something hard and sharp scraping on metal, at regular intervals.

We could just lie on all of our maps, or we could flood Europe.
The standard sense of Mario is that he won't murder someone but isn't good enough to not smash bugs. This is engraved into everyone’s mind.
There was one slight problem with the climb, and that was the spontaneous combustion.

Lets open the hatches and look down them to see whats down each before we decide how we will continue.

The first hatch has steam billowing from four large vats full of boiling water and torn paper. The second is locked on this side. The third, fourth, and fifth open into prison cells, thankfully empty. The next two are also prison cells, but have dwarves in them.

One of the dwarves grunts at you, then takes a swipe at you. The other sadly laments about seeing a dead body. Nonstop. For three hours before finally going to sleep. You leave halfway through in fear that your eardrums might implode. The scractching gets very loud. It is coming from the next pipe.

You head towards the screeching. A helmet with face mask peeks around the corner. A black tube sticks out of the shadows, handle clutched in a hand wrapped in rough green fabric. A voice cuts through the silence. "Stand down. Now." A black-clothed corpse is to the side, two bleeding holes in its head. You crouch down and hold up your hands.
" Name's Jane." She pulls off her helmet to reveal a short black ponytail and bright blue eyes. She has angular features, and you notice that short fangs protrude from her gums. She is wearing a rough green jumpsuit.
" Follow me."
She flicks her hand in the direction of a tunnel to your left, then fades away into the shadows.

You follow her through the vents to a large room. On the sides and back, five platforms are rigged up.  A kerosene stove is next to  the tunnel you came from, along with a pile of biscuits and two pineapples.
" Toad! Riggs! Shadow! Got another one!"
A thin human woman with pale skin and loose, short light brown hair leaps down from one of the platforms. A burly human male with a short dark brown beard peeks over from the side of another. All of them are carrying the small tubes, but the woman has a thin tube with two prodjections, and the male a long, thick tube with no prodjections.
"Where's Shadow?"
" Don't worry-" says the male.
A helmeted thin human falls from the ceiling, interupting him.
" You wanted me?"
" Just worried about where you were."
" Please stop turning invisible."
He glances at his hand.
"Full moon. Get out of here. Now. No questions. Run."
Everybody dashes for the tunnel, and Jane pulls a switch to seal off the room. There is a howl, and a scractching sound. Then the sounds fade, and everybody dashes back in. Shadow is on the floor, his mask shattered, and the soles of his boots are halfway across the room. Big gashes are in the floor.

You ask some questions.
They do not answer, and just move Shadow into one of the platforms.
A hatch opens on the other side, and a viper slithers in from another room.
It curls up on the floor.
The other room is filled with socks.

Carefully try to pet the viper, moving slowly towards it so as not to scare it, petting from head to tail, with the scales, not against them
