Do exactly what the game tells you to do: Read the wiki.

Kruggsmash and Nookrium have two solid instruction videos on Youtube, in case reading isn't your style.

Do you have any specific questions? Getting started is a broad subject.

1) The wiki is your friend. Start with basic concepts - food, shelter, safety, and move on to the next once you're feeling reasonably confident.

2) You will lose forts. Losing is Fun, after all! Each loss is a valuable lesson on what went wrong, and often teaches it better than hours of wiki crawling.

3) Water is scary. So is lava. Tread carefully around both until you have a better handle on what you're doing.

4) The UI is a bit of a hot mess when you don't know what you're looking for, so take notes on important menus that you'll need to get the basics done. Write them down on a post-it if you have to.

5) If it's all still too much, I recommend getting an older version like 40d (v0.28 or so). Many concepts like emotions, military, and medical care weren't expanded yet, so you can focus more on the raw mechanics until you're ready to dive into something more complicated. Note that this means you'll be dealing with old bugs, balance issues, and you'll need to declare your version number if you ask for help or advice on any specific problems later.

Also while this may be frowned upon by the community, using PeridexisErrant's starter pack to disable invaders among other things really helped me learn the game as I actually had time to work through the mechanics instead of being invaded before I learned much.

You can also embark on an island and not get invaded as well.

Turning off invaders is a completely vanilla option. It doesn't need a Starter pack and certainly isn't "frowned upon by the community".  :)
