Power armor arms race, Order of Mason thread (Turn 4, Phase 1)

Core thread
Order of Mason.
Welcome high engineers. Please, pull up a chair and get comfortable, this might take a while. As you know the Legacy of Smith has been on the move recently, and it’s been decided that we need to get started on weapons development, as our weapons are currently unsuitable for a large scale attack on the enemy’s home territories. That’s where you come in, this council will be responsible for designing and deciding how to deploy our new weapons and equipment. We have at most 6 months (3 turns) of preparation before the conflict starts.

My fellow Masonites, I believe we need to expand the weapons at our disposal to fight off the incursion from the smithies. Our rifle is in tip-top shape, but the SMG could definitely use work, and we'll need support weapons as well.

Should we invest in SMGs at all given the heavy focus on power armor given our free equipment and game title? Even if we get a hard-hitting SMG with AP rounds there is little advantage to using them over an automatic rifle or machine gun when we take into account the fact that most targets are expected to be armored and our men are expected to be equipped with exoskeletons.

With three free phases, we can get a machine gun, assault rifle, and some anti-armor rifle/artillery/etc. Or we could upgrade the suit to be something combat worthy instead of one of the weapons, if we don't want to count on a revision phase to fix the helmet.

I say improve rapid fire/support weapons and invest in explosive or heap/heat rounds to deal with armor.

Aside that focus on the suits, attempt myomer tech for more strength and mobility before just making gigantic tin can bullet sponges.

Good point, but we'll definitely need to use one design on the armour, and ideally I'd like one design for a special resource as well.

I think we should be able to just do a Big Daddy style armor on the helmet and call it good for our general use using one of the Revisions, specialist designs for specialist troops could come after we have some weapons worth using.

So lets work on that "improve rapid weapons" part!

"Janitor" M1 General Purpose MG: Using the same .303 caliber bullets as the bolt-action rifle for logistical simplicity, this air-cooled recoil-operated belt-fed machine gun is made to be reliable. It comes with one replaceable barrel and an open bolt design, allowing for sustained fire and limited weight. It is designed to replace the currently used SMGs, due to resource limits making it difficult to deploy both at once. Other features include a bipod, iron sights, and perforated barrel jacket.

A full-sized machine gun isn't going to be all that useful in close quarters, we're going to want something more reasonably sized and shaped for the role, since we're only up by 25% in regards to strength.

Contherinal
This biochemical substance was discovered beneath the Europan ice. Biologically active, this substance would eventually prove to be one of the planet's greatest exports; Ideally suited for biological enhancements and retro-viral genetic engineering, Contherinal is essentially a wonder substance that means we can ensure our soldiers are stronger, faster and tougher than the enemy outside of an exosuit.

Contherinal has it's limitations, of course, requiring host DNA in order to enact it's changes or construct a new organ, meaning we can't create a whole organism using it unless we're just going for a straight clone of someone. With this in mind though, Conthernial makes genetic and biological enhancements far simpler, by process of genetic identification and molecular growth, the substance is able to easily and swiftly deliver genetic upgrades, which take some time to manifest in a host, or can be used as both a growth medium and bonding material for lab-grown 'bioware'; essentially the biological equivalent of cybernetic enhancements.

Quote
Contherinal Medical Biogel
Developed as an off-shoot of Contherinal's growth properties, Biogel is effectively a convenient and effective field medical substance able to both rapidly heal a wound beyond normal human regeneration, and seal off the hole made in the suit in the process of inflicting said injury while it lasts giving the user time to properly repair their suit under field conditions.

Applied via a handgun-sized applicator directly onto a wound, Biogel is able to generously improve the survivability of our forces through timeply and effective field medicine. While it can't cure everything, for gunshot wounds it's more than enough.

I like the idea of this stuff. I am never posting "RED" system again which is bio fuel energy weapons. So close enough.

Still say in future bigger suits and exotic ammo or even just go bolter on their ass. If the enhanced soldiering is adding to power suits, too good to pass up. Even if not means got generic troopers who could take on a enemy in a suit, which is scary.

Yeah honestly only designs I had in mind besides my weird gun series is a Hulk Buster sized monster of a suit and mart AI to aid. Cortana or Jarvis style. (Maybe even a floating battle rig for air support and repair suits on the go.)

The only area that is apparently entirely close quarters is the sewers, medium to long distant fighting is the order of the day elsewhere. With power armor exoskeletons allowing for increased mobility, heavier weapons are the logical path to take in the long run. We don't need our guys to run and gun with them (especially if we get an intermediate cartridge assault rifle for our main forces), they'll work fine for holding points after we have taken them. Having a fully automatic weapon with the same round as our current main weapon would allow us to get double the advantage from special ammunition that we'll probably end up needing.

Medicine is probably a good idea in the long run, I'm not sure how much we can expect to use a new resource when we have yet to take any ground. It'll also work better when we take the "Shoot my in the head!" sign off our exoskeletons, though our plan is to do that like right now.

We're probably starting off with three areas under our control. All things being said, we will need close combat weapons earlier than we would need an MG.

I'm not quite sure why you'd think that? We have power-armor backed bayonets for the "in the trenches" style fighting and only a couple of areas are dead-set on have close combat of any kind. I didn't really get the feel that close combat was anything resembling a priority. There arn't any locations here where I would think "No, please don't give me machine gun support!"

Because starting the actual game turns without any combat would be boring? :P

Why would that involve close combat instead of medium or long range :V.

The middle zones, which are likely to start the game contested. Which will require close range weapons earlier, since we do already have a good long-range weapon. Add to the fact that their armoury starts off with a loadout suited for close quarters, you can see why we'll need it.

The middle would be...mines, slum, and biosphere. All of which should theoretically have both forms of combat. The mines have a notable zone with some close combat, but otherwise we really...don't need it. If we're good enough at long range we should just be able to wipe them out before they get close, while the opposite isn't really true. Shotguns are also noted for having low penetrating power-upgrading our suit a bit should make it difficult for them to use their main close combat weapon.
