Remove solid backgrounds?

Is there a way to change the solid black backgrounds? I ran dwarf fortress in terminal hoping it would work but the backgrounds are still solid black.

Here's an example. On the left is a game running with a transparent background like I want DF to have (terminal default). On the right is DF in terminal with ugly black backgrounds. https://i.imgur.com/GZtPWTs.png
