Steam achievements
« on: November 16, 2019, 06:30:51 am »

All Steam achievements should be awarded for losing the game in different ways. Losing to a Necromancer swarm: Achievement. Losing to Werebest infection outbreak: Achievement. Loyalty cascade: Achievement. Flooding: Achievement. Enraged elephants: Achievement. Tantrum spiral: Achievement. Starvation: Achievement. Magma flood: Achievement. Lose 1000 times: Achievement. FPS death: Achievement.

This is actually a serious suggestion. It would help provide encouragement for new players who inevitably lose their first few forts and may otherwise feel discouraged. It kind of turns losing on it's head by defining defeat as victory. Personally, I would make all achievements for losing, but not everyone has my macabre sense of humour.

To clarify, I am suggesting the player should abandon the fort to get the achievement after some criteria has been met to trigger the achievement. For the starvation achievement you would need to lose x% of your dwarves to starvation in the three years before abandoning the fort, for instance.

Toady's suggestion was to use Achievements for introducing different advanced aspects of the game beyond the initial tutorial; beekeeping, glass-making, etc. I mean, this is good too, I really like it, but it's likely to include both kinds in the end.

finding a Very Awesome Unknown Load of Treasure should definitely count as an achievement, as should clearing it out. Each of the uses for the Super Lucky Achievement Bonus inside should count for one too( the secret third option, being 'beat the clown to death with it' should be a hidden achievement, assuming everything about this isn't already hidden)

I like the idea of having at least one achievement upon losing/abandoning. It would mean a lot to new players if they are introduced to the ”Losing is Fun” mindset through a big shiny achievement. Losing in Dwarf Fortress isn’t the end, both because you have learnt through your own mistakes, and because the world lives on past your loss.

But most of these seem bothersome. Losing in DF is not too bad, but the achievement system actively trying to influence the player into abandoning their forts is. It simply isn’t much fun at all. Especially if there are no achievements to gain from actually playing the game. Rather, the player should be encouraged to eventually overcome, because losing is not fun by itself, losing is fun as part of the cycle losing=>learning=>overcoming=>losing(preferably in a new way).

1000 forts/adventurers is also a preposterous amount, I’ve played DF for years and haven’t come past two dozens. Some achievements should be difficult, but they shouldn’t be practically impossible.

An Adventurer or single militiadwarf slaying a semi-megabeast in single combat.
An Adventurer or single militiadwarf slaying a megabeast in single combat. (2 different achievements)
Slaying an enemy using part of the enemy's own body as a weapon.
Pumping magma from the magma sea all the way up to the surface.
Growing surface crops in Hell.

Surface crops in Hell? That is a worthy challenge.

In retrospect, all achievements for losing does seem a little over-the-top. Would certainly be frustrating for experienced players who are unlikely to kill a fort through the usual noob mistakes.

How does Steam and Itch.io deal with no longer accessible achievements? Sooner or later e.g. the HFS as we know it will be replaced, so a solution for related achievements needs to be considered.

Otherwise, I like the achievement of planting stuff there, it's an idea far enough out there to both challenge seasoned players, and to showcase one of Dwarf Fortress' best sides.
Admittedly, it has the problem of maybe being too spoileriffic not to hide (using Steam's hidden achievements system), but at the same time being to specific to hide, as if you do very very few players would even discover it. I suppose "the HFS" could be used as an obtuse codeword, if you were to leave it un-hidden. Then, having an hidden achievement called "The Hidden Fun Stuff (HFS)" being unlocked for opening a path to the underworld would explain what "the HFS" is for all those players wondering about the strange plantation achievement.

A thread started recently on the subreddit, discussing possible steam achievements. I figured telling them off (”Go to the forum and necro this old thread!”) would do no good, and the achievements they are coming up with are !fun!, so I’ll just link the thread here so Toady doesn’t miss it.

Weird, excessive projects should definitely be one of the achievements. A tower made of microcline that reaches at least 40 z-levels up? Hitting 200 population with no children? Attracting and killing at least 3 forgotten beasts and 3 titans?

Killing an enemy with a non-weapon item.  (In my current fort, one of my dorfs beat an "Eye of Delerion" (large experiment) to death with a large rose quartz he was hauling).

Personally I hope all the achievements are more along the lines of achieving specific stuff and not just grinding out x amount of things, like lose 100 forts or whatever. And while tempting to make all the achievements about losing to stuff I think a happy medium of both would be better, so say achievements for losing to most of the major threats, then a good chunk linked to advanced features or cool goals ^^

I give my ideas of "easier" fortress achievements, they could give hints to new players of what is possible in a "normal" fort.
There are soooo many more achivements we could go with. But I'm giving some "tutorial" ideas there.

I know some cool ideas involve "do [this] WHILE DOING [that]" (eg: "have a werebeast killed before it could bite anybody"), which is very hard to do in programming.... It requires some code changes, and counters and all...
Hence my list only has "do [this]" kinds of achievements. The events already exist in game, so they could easily trigger the achievement completion piece of code. I think...

The first of many : Craft an item of Masterwork quality
Shiny metal : Craft your first bar of steel
The drink of the Gods : Brew some mead
It will heal eventually : Have a wounded dwarf carried to a Hospital
Delicious fish : Clean a fish at a fishery
Waste not, want not : Butcher a dead animal to aquire food

You're doing it right : Loose a fortress
We made a terrible mistake... : Embark in a Terrifying biome

Lazy bastard : Automatically complete a work order using the Manager
Once a beautiful tree... : Trade some wood to the elves
The stresses were unbearable : Have one of your citizen go insane
Perfectly cave adapted : Have a dwarf vomit because of the sun

Some "tougher" achievements :

Alcohol dependent : Have a dwarf die of alcohol poisoning
Very shiny metal ! : Craft your first bar of adamantine
Woops ! : Crush one of your citizen under a bridge
Some called him the Deathless : Have a dwarf die of old age

Yeah, here goes...
I think it's cool to put references to other popular games in the achivements names (Minecraft's "The cake is a Lie" is the most famous. But there are no cakes in DF... :( )
