Are dwarfs supposed to eat mud?
« on: March 28, 2020, 07:58:55 am »

After one mud man in third layer cavern got killed (by a forgotten beast) it left a piece of mud which then got claimed by a dwarf who proceeded to happily haul it to the dining room and ate it there.

There was absolutely no scarcity of food.

Also the dwarf in question didn't seem to be hungry - only thirsty (she went for a drink afterwards).

Nothing fun happened afterwards...

I guess wiki might need updating as it states:
Quote
When killed, mud men turn into a glob of mud which can't be used for anything.
(from https://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Mud_man, emphasis mine)

DF version 47.04 (win).

No, no unhappy thought - just ate it and continued like normal.

I'd check the preferences of that dorf (still sounds like a bug, though, although modding can cause odd effects).

And, elves have ethics that allow them to "devour" defeated enemies. I don't think that's supposed to appear in fortress mode, though.

Maybe it counts as some sort of meat since it's creature remains ?

It is clearly a bug. Are you using mods that could add it, DFhack memory editing or other things that could produce this effect?
No mods or DFHack but I'm using Dwarf Therapist (for normal stuff: setting labours, nicknames, assigning to squads).

I'd check the preferences of that dorf (still sounds like a bug, though, although modding can cause odd effects).
Again, no mods, preferences look quite normal:

Anyway thanks, probably will file bug report but for anyone interested here's the save (before consumption - the dwarf is still hauling it to the dining hall):

Yeah, I was like "what the circus is this dwarf hauling in the 3rd layer?".

Anyway, bug report has been filled:

Reminds me of when magma crab basalt globs were being stored in food stockpiles.

Boy, whoever you have working in the kitchen must be really bad if your dwarves would rather eat mud...

Dwarf corydoras apparently can sift through detritus to find food. Sometimes dwarfs do eat mud.

Yeah, they're counted as food globs:

Not tagged as edible in raws though...
