Project CHR$(143) : a CPC tribute (now listed by PC Gamer!)
« on: April 28, 2020, 12:15:00 pm »

I've been told some of you are not scared by text/symbol based games?

In tribute to 1980s Amstrad CPC BASIC games (and their user defined symbols), I have designed a small PC video game, which also includes some references to slightly more popular productions... It's a mix of action/puzzle/physics. First level is simple, but, depending on your abilities, some others may be a little more challenging...

Here is a short trailer: https://youtu.be/mYNQt9fLlVM

Windows/linux binaries are downloadable from http://chr143.itch.io/project-chr143

Starter version is totally free (no ads either). Hope some will enjoy!

Edit (May 1st): I offer a free full version to the holder of the best 22-first-levels-cumulative-time (aka free starter version cumulative time) by May 8th, Noon CDT!

Rabwin is the first official player who has made it through levels 1 to 22...
Kudos! His name will be included in the credits ;)

Anyone else?

This is... quite something. It feels kind of like something you'd see if Zachtronics worked from ZZT (which I suppose rather dates me). Unfortunately, it also kind of inspires me to do the same thing that every Zachtronics release does: Nope my way straight to the door before my brain decides to melt.  :-\

(Incidentally, I got to the lower left of stage 5, realized exactly what was going on in the right side of the room, how I screwed it up, and decided to stop because I've slept 4 of the last 30 hours.)

But if anybody does enjoy logic puzzles, definitely give this little guy a try.

Thanks for your feedback :P
If your brain is able to reach level 7 before its melting point, I think you might regain hope...
(this is not only about logic puzzles, you see ;))

What's the current highscore?

Rabwin had cumulated 1:32:54 when escaping level 22 but I am definitely sure he did not try to optimize...

My personal best is 0:21:14 (which, I think, may be improved a little). Of course, I do not compete ;D

Following feedback from several players - some of whom were afraid their brain might melt - version 1.05 now includes more advice and... allows skipping a level!  :o

Level 22 is now within reach! ;)

Hi back!
I have just released an ultimate version:
  • the first levels have been simplified;
  • you are still allowed to skip a level;
  • completing level 4 unlocks the new "sandbox" level
  (very simple at the beginning, including new features as you reach higher levels...)

This should ease the learning curve... and, last but not least, Robcfg is officially credited for his precious help when porting to macOS!

I guess this is the final one, as I have to move to something else  ;)

Last but not least : latest (v1.12) full version is now downloadable for free.

No excuse for not reaching level 72 (except you probably need to be a demigod ;D)

All the best to everyone...

This thing still kicks my butt, but glad to see that when I *finally* get good at it, there's even more to kick my butt some more ;D

In spite of your modesty, I sense you are doing pretty fine...
Had you already reached level 22?

I would greatly appreciate to hear from your achievements!

Yeah, discrete thermodynamic, what a hassle!

I suppose you are not stuck by level 16 (where you just need to press [1] in successive places...) but level 17 may requires testing various designs...

...in order to get and keep something like that: "(superheated steam)(turbo generator)(water)"
