By the way, you can research something multiple times to learn more info about it.

Light Scout Analysis

3 - Medium progress

Our team has finished preliminary studies on the recovered UFO hull, which was designated the "Light Scout". It is very small compared to some of the orbital signals we have detected; barely more than a probe.
It is approximately a dozen meters from nose to tail, comprising a "saucer" section and two "wings" filled with what we believe to be sensor equipment. Two small thrusters mounted on the back of the saucer provide propulsion. The craft does not appear to have a reactor of any kind, instead seeming to draw power from rechargeable capacitors in the wings. It is almost certainly not capable of independent operation, instead it would need to be launched from a "home" vessel at the start of each mission (and return there afterwards).

It has poor combat performance for such an advanced vessel; it is no match for one of our Condor interceptors. The main weapon is an energy cannon mounted beneath the saucer, which has a relatively slow fire speed and a shorter range than our Sidewinder missiles. The armoured shell is remarkably strong and impressively heat-resistant given it is only a few millimeters thick, but is too thin to offer much protection against modern munitions. Enjoy the gentle introduction while it lasts, commanders - I doubt the larger ships will be such easy prey.

It is now the Engineering phase. You know the drill. Why not purchase a few new interceptors?

Balance: 190 credits

(you can rename the two alien species encountered so far (lizardmen and greys) to something else if you want)

All The Fighters
Purchase 3 F-22 interceptors (-180 credits) equipped with Sidewinders and a Vulcan, at least for now.
If in doubt, shoot everything down.

Quote
A Balanced Approach
Purchase 2 F-22 Interceptors (-120 credits).
Purchase 1 Black Hawks (-50 credits)
Since they respawn yet still have a listed price I assume we can, in fact, purchase more default aircraft?

Okay, so mechanics/exploit question.  Can we use more than one chopper per site?  What's stopping us from buying more Blackhawks and air assaulting LZ X-ray like it's the Ia Drang Valley?  Troops and M-16s are free after all.

The probable enemy use of explosives (which would make mass assaults without advanced equipment REALLY BAD for morale) and/or a brand-new gamerule related to the setting shenanigans that prevent us from calling in, say, the US military and/or NATO on every single UFO and having it get obliterated by an array of different methods like anti-ICBM interceptor missiles, aircraft, SAM sites, artillery of various flavors, and all-out armored and airborne assaults on every single landing position.

That would be an overt waste of an engineering phase (and credits that could have been spent on better interceptors and ground equipment). Grow up.

They're all focusing on the status quo, instead of the greater threat. Don't worry, their conventional shit won't last that long as the aliens slowly refit their incrementally larger (and stronger) craft to actually function properly in an atmosphere.

How about we design something that incorporates the alien weaponry we found? They probably don’t expect to be fighting vs their own weapons

Uh, researching alien tech and steadily improving our stuff with human/alien hybrid tech is kind of the name of every XCOM game ever, so, naturegirl, I think we'll eventually manage to do just that.

So screwing around aside, we're only fielding 8 guys this turn, so we're good with Tavors and Blackhawks.

"All the fighters" it is.

I'm pretty sure we can send *two* Black Hawks to the one crash site, since they're available. Might as well be absolutely sure the enemies die and we recover everything available.

The reason I suggest a plan with two additional Black Hawks is to allow us to tackle additional crash sites, with more soldiers, yet still giving us a total of 8 interceptors, any one of which is stated to be superior to a Light Scout UFO, two of which could probably take on a Scout alone. Hopefully.
