What's the point of building a giant obsidian tower, or a computer out of minecarts? In my mind, it fits with slaying all the monsters in adventure mode and wiping out the goblins and elves. The dwarves are taming the world for a golden age of peace, progress, and enlightenment.

There is very little use for scientific books.

Medical books and engineering books are supposed to give a small amount of xp in those fields. It doesn't seem to help dwarves without any knowledge in those fields (or I missed it since its very little xp).

In peaceful fortresses it might help to prevent medical skill to rust, I didn't get to test that (not that peaceful world).

Dwarves like books based on their preferences. I guess it is good to have a wide variety.

A bit more of what is happening can be learned if you enable all conversations in log (announcements.txt). That comes with a heavy amount of nonsense though. A mod or script that filters those would help.

There are books that can change a dwarf's values, unless that has been removed in the new version. They're rare though.

Well, certain books can have a huge impact when your dwarves read them, although those are rare.
Also, your dwarves can get a bit of a happiness boost from reading books and learning new ideas, although the thoughts usually aren't strong enough to stick in their long-term memories.
In general though it's just a nice roleplay feature, a bit like building a grand memorial hall for your fallen heroes or replacing muddy paths with stone floors. Building a fantasy equivalent of the Library of Alexandria is a fun goal in and of itself.

Could be that the fortress is for eternal , i read..
"Any mortal creature who reads one will immediately learn the secrets to immortality and the ability to raise the dead"
Should it that those secrets can be used on a life of a dorf himself ?

Yes. They become necromancers.
That's not what you want for your fort that evil has overtaken the fortress
The fortress should be centre of a everlasting dwarven civilization
