Congratulations are in order! Well done Toady for sticking with this project for so long - many would have given up or gotten bored by now. Even at this "early" stage DF is a great piece of work with way more detail than 95% of commercial games.

It's times like this when I wish I -really- didn't have to go to work  :(  But meh, another 9 1/2 hours of anticipation won't hurt I guess :P

Again, well done - strike the earth!  :D

Wow.

It's finally here. I can hardly believe it. Congratulations, Toad. The new site looks great. I still haven't finished looking through everything... (by the way, the link to the Dwarf Fortress forum on the front page still goes to the Curses Arcade forum.)

My wait, however, has not yet ended. I'm going to refrain from downloading it until August 16, which is my birthday. Or at least,  that's what I'll do if I can stand it, anyway.

On a final note, I just wanted to engage in a little unseemly bragging and point out this page on the old Dwarf Fortress thread. That part where I thought I'd figured out one of the giant easter eggs? My guess was basically right, only it was actually on an even larger scale than I'd envisioned. It was maybe more detective work than a guess, since Toad had given a few things away in  this really old thread. Basically, the giant easter egg was the roguelike play-an-adventurer half of the game, which Toad has now revealed on the new Dwarf Fortress page.

And with that, I'll return to waiting. It's going to be one long-ass week...

Well.. Even though I'm at work, I couldn't resist it.. I had to start the game and just quickly check what it looks like..

I'm in the middle of the world generation at the moment, and I think the game has already beaten my anticipations.. many times.

Toady, you are a god.

Of course I haven't got to play yet, so the game could still just quit after creating the world with a message like "You got punk'd!", but..

Uh, never mind about the front page link. I hadn't refreshed.

I'm reading through the new development pages now. I thought I might be able to figure out what that mysterious bloat you put in a while back was, but I see that some things still remain secret...

That happened to Eagleon, actually.  It froze in year 21.  I sent him a pre-gen'd world.  We'll see what other problems people have over the next few days.

Edit:  he he he, indeed, more secrets.  I can guarantee that these secrets are all kinda small and dumb though.

Yeaaaah... there is a roguelike style game. Wouhouh ! I had not expected that !

I have not tried yet, but it seems that it'll be a good game !

I am really pleased to see that some are able to create great, sophisticated games without becoming terribly arrogant (think Derect Smart), or just disappearing into vaporware (think entropy).

Just for this you've achieved something Toady !

This is a great gift for my 18th birthday...Downloading it, appropriately at 8% as of now...By the way, "~100 mb Disk Space"?That's impressive...Oh well, I still have 17 or so gigabytes to waste with savefiles :-)

Thank everybody.  Hopefully things are going all right.

Feel free to ask questions here or on the irc channel.  Remember to read the manual for some basic pointers.  "Your First Outpost" has some helpful stuff.  "Your First Adventurer" is vaguely helpful, but you're gonna die anyway.

The 100MB figure is sort of iffy, hence the ~.  Your first universe will be around 10MB say, then it will slowly grow.  And grow.  The 100MB was a warning.  It can get quite large as you visit more and more sites, since it saves all the maps.  I used to store random seeds to regenerate places, but now I'll just use your disk.  It allows me to change the more drastically.
