This looks cool. I'm very interested.

I would love to be play. Maybe as a farmer (beekeeper, milker, cheeser, thresher, soaper, grower) or some kind of crafter (weaver, clothier, crafts, mason, glasser, potter, glazer) or whatever you think.

It wouldn't have made any difference in any election so far (except maybe the 253 election), but can we have ranked-choice voting? I love ranked-choice voting.

How about a carpenter with a couple ranks in bone carving? She's the third least stressed citizen... As farmers go, I may also recommend one of two legendary growers, one also a soaper/milker and one a thresher/shearer/beekeeper, both military dwarves in the new squad. Of course there are plenty more options if you have further preferences. Looking to join a party?

Also, the Sunlit Action Coalition wasn't actually formed until later.

I'd like to be the thresher/shearer/beekeeper or soaper/milker in the new squad.

Thanks for the correction. I'm noticing I misread some stuff and two parties merged.

I'm not sure which party I want to join. I will register as an independent for now and hear out the candidates campaigns during the Obby elections.

Hey folks, sorry for my absence! The package manger of the Linux distro I was using ate itself alive along with its whole package database in the middle of a routine update, trashing the system.  :'( I've spent the last several days getting everything set up again, this time with a different (more controlled/more laborious) distro. I finally have a graphical web browser going again (I spent a few days working purely from the system console :P mainly playing DF and waiting for things to compile).

(As a side note, in case anyone reading this feels put off by the idea of using Linux :P , it's not like this with every distro—the Debian/Red Hat/SUSE-based ones are more stable.)

Probably not because we haven't even had an election go to the second ballot yet and I'd honestly enjoy it if we had an election competetive enough that it took a few ballots to get through. If we ever got to the point, however, where we were at a total deadlock I'd be willing to consider other electoral methods.

Well, I originally switched to Linux 9 years ago when macOS garbled the file system table of a drive I was writing a backup to, which I would say is much worse, so it's not like expensive operating systems are free from instability or something. :-\ When I used to work for a managed services company and supported hundreds of commercial Windows installations it was a routine occurrence that we would need to have people send us their workstations to be "rebuilt" because their environment had become too badly corrupted to be practically reparable at a distance. The difference with Linux is I know exactly what happened as I've read the bug report and can talk directly with the developers involved, and if the bug wasn't already known I could read the package manager's source, identify the problem, and offer a patch (which feels deeply gratifying). With a proprietary OS all you can do is shake your head, start over, and hope the company decides to fix the problem someday.

It wouldn't have made any difference in any election so far (except maybe the 253 election), but can we have ranked-choice voting? I love ranked-choice voting.

Hi jecowa! ^^ I'm sympathetic to both of these perspectives. I like ranked-choice voting too (although I doubt that my dwarf has any preferences in that regard at this point) but it would seem more significant if the elections were more contentious. Who knows what will happen in the future though.

I think I'm too sleepy to do a good job right now but I'll try to get in a journal entry or something later. The recent events have been pretty outrageous. :D

I'd just like to interject for a moment.  What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux.

Journal of Nephilim, Captain of the Black Legion
13th Hematite, 257—The election just concluded a few hours ago and I completely failed to secure any support for an alternative to Maximum Spin. Perhaps there was no other dwarf who desired to serve a shortened term as overseer. Could the fate of the end of Tonnot’s term have frightened most of them away from seeking the office? Whatever the reason, there was no competion our newly-elected overseer had to overcome.

And our new overseer has certainly made himself quite busy. Just an hour or so after being escorted back to my quarters by the military, someone slid a piece of paper under my door with the following message:

“By order of the Overseer, the unlawful militia organization known as the Black Legion is hereby disbanded, effective immediately. All members shall be issued new military positions pending reorganization and expansion of the standing army. The position of Captain of the Guard, erstwhile purview of disgraced founder Nephilim, shall remain vacant pending a formal corruption inquest.”

If you call this leniency, I swear by Ustuth that I will hammer myself right here! If I survive whatever punishment the fortress has in store for me, I’ll be back at square one. Is it even possible to carve out a slice of this young fortress for those of us loyal to the true monarch? It seemed like such a simple task seven years ago, but now this fortress has grown and attracted sorts like Tonnot who wish to ensure that such a goal cannot be achieved.

I cannot allow myself to falter. Even if I lose hope in my chances of success, evil must be opposed and treason must be punished. Those are immutable truths beyond my own self and it is to them that I must answer.

Gods, be with me.

After taking a few days to come to grips with the situation of the fort, I finally feel like I can begin working out some priorities. Unfortunately, I don’t appear to remember anything about the discussion that went on in the electors’ room at the beginning of the year, so I’m not sure what promises I might have made at the time… but since I wasn’t elected then anyway, I suppose I can assume any such promises are void now. Honestly, other than a few electors being incredibly sad, I don’t really see much in the way of actual problems. Nephilim, despite having gained a reputation for violently lashing out, isn’t even the one under the most stress – that would be Lucky. Lucky tells me, among other things, that she feels her legendary skills at woodcarving have not been put to suitable use, so, although we don’t exactly have logs for days, I assign her her own workshop and tell her she can use it whenever she wants. It seems, though, that her duties as the chief doctor might keep her too occupied; I’m loath to relieve her from the position, although there are equally skilled candidates, due to her status, but I do try to tactfully tell her to take some time off.

Meanwhile, Nephilim presents a trickier issue. He has not publically objected to my order regarding the Black Legion, and, somewhat to my surprise, the Legionnaires have integrated well into their new squadrons and seem to be more or less accepting of their circumstances. The fact that Nephilim had already been stripped of formal command may of course be relevant. Even still, I need to find some way to keep him from starting further brawls, especially since they only seem to worsen his tempestuous mood. I’m actually unclear on whether the sentence that had already been assigned to him will be carried out now that I’ve suspended all criminal justice activities; as it stands, I would prefer if it were not, since he’s been sentenced to a beating when what he really needs is time to himself. I have, in any case, relieved him of all duties for the time being, and I am considering constructing a private retirement suite for him and Quantum.

Speaking, of course, of retirement suites, the other elector looming large in my mind of late is Yung Boujee, the Bitten. Although her curse keeps her alive, she seems to be suffering direly from being closed off from society, especially as nobody has given any concern to offer her any sort of provisions. I’m arranging for a sealable anteroom to be stocked with food and drink she can enjoy, even if she doesn’t technically need it, and I’ve already informed her she has permission to treat one of the side rooms of her prison as an officially-designated temple.

Finally, I remember, foggily, having heard someone complaining about the surface level being insecure, so, although I cannot of course condone any important work being done out of the honest sunshine, I’ve decided to order a highly defensible section of the lowest cavern closed off for construction of backup facilities, during what seems to be a period of relative absence of unsavory wildlife. It does pain me, and might result in some relationship discord, but I ultimately feel it's reasonable to have at least a small farm, kitchen, and still down there in case things go really bad. In the process, I also discovered that some areas of the higher caverns have been left wide open again, to my incredible irritation, but it shouldn’t be too much trouble to fix this, Nökor be merciful.

Meanwhile, as if in mockery of my grand vision, someone has installed dozens of glass and gem windows in the mountainside to provide unspeakably decadent views to the dining tables of a few random citizens. Perhaps the great dome is simply too great for this world, at least in my lifetime.

Oh, right, one last thing. There are way too many animals. (Finally, something I can take a picture of!)

I love animals as much as anyone (especially the fluffy yaks), but this crosses a line even for me. Everything that doesn’t grow wool and isn’t a bird is going to be gelded, and, assuming we ever get through our massive backlog of stored food, there’s going to be a lot of poultry on the menu before too long. (Shame we don’t have some eagles...)

It is as I feared. Nephilim's sentence was carried out by one of his own handpicked former subordinates, despite my order suspending the criminal justice process. The dwarf in question, Unib Bookroad the Adorable Girders of Spreading, had killed three dwarves in the pursuit of "justice" before. Now she has killed a fourth, quickly and summarily, with a brutal series of blows to the head. I do not know what could have prompted such disloyalty, and I cannot bring myself to care. I simply want her out of my sight. Some previous overseer had drawn up orders, never issued, to send a raid across the entire continent to some insignificant monastery; I have two squads sent out on the job, including Unib's new position. At least she will not be here for me to have to look at.

I wonder how Quantum will take this...

Ouch. That's cold.

Redorf me as Unib when she returns from the raid. Just call her "Unib" in quotes to make her easier to find.

Journal of Quantum Drop, Year 257.

Nephilim is dead. I... I do not feel sad at the moment, but I cannot say why. Perhaps I am merely still coming to terms with this; ironic, I suppose, that he should die to the hands of another dwarf and not in battle. A mighty warrior, wielding the metal of the gods, and he died to this?

(Multiple pages missing; several have been torn out, others are soaked in ink.)

Yes, that must be it. I see that coward's hidden hand in this; I do not doubt that he is behind this, in some manner or form. The Jester-King I cannot reach, but nor can this rabid fool escape Goldsilver now that she has exposed herself. The Black Legion and other loyalists must be informed of this fresh treachery, and the one behind it. I will have to review some of the... older rites before I make my own moves.

That leashless dog will
pay.
