It's time for Toady to fix the game
« on: November 20, 2020, 08:06:22 am »

Shiny new UI and graphics are great (and behold, Toady is already adding unnecessary gimmicks like sprites changing based on how weathered is the weapon), but I seriously hope that before jumping into another decade-long development of magic, Toady would first fix the game. The bugs are just accumulating and what's the point in features if you can't use them.

- Marriages, friends and grudges are broken, and you need ant-sized meeting rooms for anyone to know anyone
- Military training & equipment are still bugged
- Raiding\outside missions are broken and can ruin the entire fortress due to bugs
and many many more

I think if Toady won't stop at some point to go back and clean up his code, DF will eventually collapse under the weight of its own bugs, and you know very very well that "magic" update will introduce a ton of those too

The whole point of the current update is to make the game more accessible for general consumption.  That includes working on a proper UI & graphics and also fixing bugs. This has already been confirmed multiple times, including in Toady's FotF answer from a few weeks ago:

Quote
I still have a hope to do a fixer-upper release for the currently released 47.04, because the main issues are going to need to be patched up before the Premium release anyway, whether that's new bugs or stress issues or longstanding bugs or what have you.

So a mini-rant about bugs not being fixed is really misplaced at this point. Anyway, as to the specific issues you mention:

Quote
- Marriages, friends and grudges are broken, and you need ant-sized meeting rooms for anyone to know anyone
Not anymore, 47.03 added a person-seeking behaviour to dwarves, so they will now stand next to each in meeting areas and socialise properly with each other. Of course, some more improvement would be welcome, like dwarves seeking out relatives or already existing friends, because while friendships actually form now, marriages are still quite rare and I don't think I've seen a single grudge in ages.

Quote
- Military training & equipment are still bugged
I am not aware of any bugs around training in the current version. And the fact that military equipment is finnicky is a well-known issue and a common complaint, so it's presumably on the list of things that will get looked at for the Premium version.

Quote
- Raiding\outside missions are broken and can ruin the entire fortress due to bugs
The only major, critical issue here that I am aware of is the equipment list corruption bug. But again, that's known and acknowledged and one cause was already fixed in one of recent updates. The issue is still present, but considering it's a critical bug that leads to crashes, I am fairly certain it will get fixed.

You're going to get blow back on this, Deus_Vult. But it's not because you're wrong - it's because Toady is well aware of it, and has already addressed it.

Bug fixing is a lot less rewarding than content additions, it is also not are enjoyable for the community - as most of us understand and avoid the bugs while enjoying new content and would rather have Toady working on that over fixing some item bugs. We'll see how Steam reacts - I expect poorly. But no amount of bug fixing will stop that.

Toady: I'm gonna clean up the game, add graphics, a modern UI, tutorial, Steam Workshop Support, fix up a whole load of major bugs and maybe even fix the military and labour interfaces so people use them. And with Kitfox support I'm gonna take the time to do it right.

Irate Internet person half-way through development of above: Fix bugs now!

I suggest listening to some recent interviews in which Toady tirelessly repeats the development plans rather than just making stuff up.

Gentlemen, I was expecting blowback, but the truth of the matter is, Toady has never been interested in fixing bugs.
Have you seen a single post talking about major bugs\not working mechanics actually fixed (and not Toady's promises "I hope one day I'll do it") since the work on steam version started? No, it's just UI and graphics, and it's not that Toady just adds them, he found a new horse to ride to death, and these are new graphical elements and tricks that he insists on adding to the game now.
I promise you that when steam version will come out, none of the more or less complicated bugs would be fixed AND there will be new introduced in relation to new UI bells and whistles.

Why would there be posts about bugs being fixed when there hasn't been time for that yet? The focus started with graphics/UI so that the artists would have the new system in place asap to continue their work (since it'd be silly to start with bugfixing/tuning and then have the artists sit on their thumbs unable to do anything).

Toady has never been interested in fixing bugs.

I mean it's not like every release thus far had always have at least some bugs fixed...

It's understandable, to an extent, that the game having bugs frustrates you but come on.You are just being mean here.

So the conclusion I'm getting here is that we use QSPs because dwarves can't pilot submarines.

I'm one of those who's complained that there's a need for a better balance between new stuff and fixing (new and old) bugs. I'm also someone who's been very frustrated by the Villains release dragging on and on, rather than switching immediately to the Premium release focus to increase the chances of an acceptable reception on release. However, once Toady finally switched gears, the course is more or less set. There's still a risk that time will run out before sufficient bug fixing has been done, but the UI stuff is part of what the Premium decision requires (regardless of what you think of the wisdom of that decision, once made Toady will have to follow through).
Once the Premium release is out there will have to be a new set of bug fixing releases (as usual), and I, for one, hope they will contain more fixes than the corresponding releases in the past, before Toady rushes on to the rest of the promised post Premium release stuff (hopefully interspersed with more bug fixing). I also hope that the new development paradigm of supporting the current release in parallel with development of the next one will result in regular releases updating the current version that contain bug fixes (in addition to small improvements/adjustments with a limited scope).

Is it possible to write a script to reply to these things?  It seems like they pop up every so many months.  Also, why is there a bug tracker if Toady doesn’t care about fixing bugs?

And how do bugs get marked as fix, if ToadyOne doesnt fix bugs.

I don’t think that bugs are the main problem, features that clearly don’t work, like the ones already mentioned in this thread, are more important. Making the game more accessible without addressing that first will not, in my opinion, make this game much more popular.

I fear that a lot of people might get disappointed after trying the adventure mode. It’s just not a great roguelike at the moment.

It’s Dwarf Fortress adventurer mode! Some kind of open world RPG with roguelike elements (tile-based combat, permadeath).
