I'm not familiar with this particular mod, do the animal signs mean anything mechanically?

The animal signs grant bonuses. For example, lizard-signs have a faster healing rate and get a combat boost after they've been in combat for a bit.
Owl-signs learn faster globally, gain a speed boost when fleeing and cannot be caught in webs. Eel-signs gain a toughness bonus and 2 natural skill in fishing and fish cleaning, as well as 3 natural swimming skill.
Rat-signs gain a bonus to disease resistance and start with novice skill in animal training.

As a general rule, if a caste starts with experience in a skill, they also learn that skill faster.

When the kobolds arrived at the designated site for the new warren, Cheniba set out to scan the area. There were some webs around and plenty of trees, and a pond.

Sheba dashed towards the pond with a piece of long grass wrapped around an almond in her hand.
Flame started yelling at her.
"Sheba! Cut down trees and stop fishing!"

Sheba caught one fish then went to work cutting down trees after Cheniba yelled "stahp fishing!"

The wood was used to build a hut

The kobolds drew back to survey the hut. Oninti remarked that it was a bit small. The others said it could be expanded later.
