Papery Pancake
A well intended selection for larger and larger upper surfaces for photosynthesis has resulted in a maladaptation. The 'pan' part of the cake is now too thin to be structurally stable, and isn't all that better at getting more sunlight. A cross-stream is enough to tear the upper surface apart, which is a serious problem because it is the thing that keeps the plant together, and the pieces that were violently torn apart do not regrow. But all and all, it can marginally get by.
And one of the reasons for that is under the surface. Their tentacles have gained the ability to digest the things they catch. All kinds of blobs and even some algea is in the menu, if they are lucky enough to catch them of course.
But as long as it finds it's way at random, it can only opportunistically hunt.

A small green protoplant shaped like a flat, thin circle. It is 15 centimeters in diameter. A small water siphon is situated at its center, which it uses to get minerals and nutrients more efficently. Surrounding this pump, a ring of long and thin, retractable white tendrils reside, and are used to filter the water and digest the things they catch. It reproduces by splitting in two when it gets too big. It lives permanently stuck to the sea surface through the dozens of tiny oil-filled pimples across its body. It can be found forming coincidental mats, as well as alone.

Churning Tuffish
Being the fastest in the seas requires alot of energy. So this new clade, also knows as the tuffishes, have developed a mutation that helps them at harvesting that energy. Their inner cells have developed bigger and more numerous golgi apparatuses, which can produce digestive enzymes at a faster and more efficent rate. By doing this though, these cells and tissues have lost their ability to shift and absorb freely, and are more rigid in structure .The food comes in through the outer, unspecialised layer that can still do both of those.
It can sustain its speed and itself for longer now. It have also grown larger too.

Description
A proto-animal the size of a large grape. It moves along the sea floor and above with its tuff of flagella on its bum and digests any organic debris it can find through the specialised tissue inside of it. It has seven black dots on its very front, one of them being large,and the others circling it to form a hexagon shape, connected to the bum fuzz with connections of specialised cells. It uses these dots to sense the strength of certain smells associated wih food and move towards the strongest emission it can sense. It reproduces by splitting in two when it gets too big.

Boney Blob
As the generations went by, the most rigid, and therefore the fastest of these gargantuan blobs got to survive the grazing competition. Their inner and outer tissues are fully augmentes with a new calcite, mineral skeleton, which allows them to be much sturdier.
And as an another advantage, the skeleton provides more efficent pathways for its ancestral way of locomotion, which is now activated again to support its never alternative
It is faster and more rigid now, but it can still use more specialisations for its lifestyle.

Description
A round proto-animal 12 centimeters in width and length. It slowly moves along the sea shore and digests any organic debris it can find, which is usually algea. It is covered in a very thin coat of tendrils which it uses to move, and it gives it a fuzzy look if you look close enough. Under this thin coat, a specialised layer of tissue keeps the tendril movements in check and prevents any nutrient loss. And under and around that is a calcite framework that keeps it rigid and provides pathways for cells to push the blob foward. A specialised protein allows it to sense and change directions towards the light. It reproduces by splitting in two when it gets too big.

Pack Pancake
A divergent line from the main pancake lineage has taken root. Unlike their close cousins, these plants have instead developed to refine the emergent phenomenon of forming mats. The edges of their pan are laced with a ring coat of proteins that connect and stick to the coats of others of its kind. But as this kind of bonding weakens and becomes insufficent at numbers bigger than a couple of dozen individuals, so these mats are small, but numerous.
This is a kind of a neutral mutation, since no mutualism is going on here. But it is doing better than its relative at the moment.

Environment
On the southern hemisphere of the planet Aqautico, a saltwater crater lake called The Crater Sea resides.
Surrounding the sea, a barren, lifeless rocky wasteland goes on for hundreds of kilometers, stretching as far as eye can see.
And through the east side, five rivers called The Harbringers follow curved, close-by paths to the sea, coming from far away and who knows where. Where they come from is also close to a volcano.
Multicelluar life is limited the sea, represented only by simple lifeforms. Vast growths of algea and small mats of protoplants can be seen along the shallow coasts and the deep sea.
