Glovedburies- Fortressing in the Age of Goblins
« on: July 15, 2022, 12:12:49 pm »

A Universe of Portents
Map of Orid Mudung (The Universe of Portents), year 535 during the Age of Goblins. The dwarven fortress of Regostar(Glovedburies) is marked by the yellow X.
We begin our story at a beginning. Not The Beginning, that was 535 years ago. No, instead we start at the beginning of the reign of Queen Ducim Ulzeststâkud, known as “Tiger-Trainer”, nine years after the founding of Glovedburies by the Ultimate Seal. This mighty fortress has stood strong against several goblin sieges.

Some of her highness's preferences
Following the recent Goblin escape incident, which took two lives, Ducim claimed the position of monarch after a discussion with rivals in the local nobility. She used to be Champion of the fortress and was married to the Militia Commander, Shorast. Last year he died valiantly in the Onslaught of Conquerors in the defense of Glovedburies. She is now a single mother, having given birth to a daughter seven months ago.

22nd of Timber
Yet again the Sorcerous Arenas are away on a raid the goblin fortress of Wallast. Oh Wallast, once we work out how to defeat the 5000 goblins in your walls, we will reclaim you. Meanwhile, the Ochre Webs are travelling to the elven retreat to ‘borrow’ some animals. The manager has decided to reorganise the orders, which have left us with some unconstructed walls.

At present, the Dwarves (300) of Lone Vestibule (blue and pink) are at war with the goblins(15000)(red) and at peace with the elves(200)(green)
23rd of Timber
The Sorcerous Arenas have returned. They are professional ambushers from all their raiding. Spoils of particular note are musical instruments.

In the meantime, work continues on the new royal tomb, its floor is carved with masterpieces by the Miner Thîkut Ocîgmebzuth.

The grand memorial hall and temple can be seen in the bottom-right of this picture. The tomb to the East is that of the recently interred King "Soyboy" Udistonul.
26th of Timber
The raiding party to Authoredwasp return covered in blood…

Only two dwarves did not return, and one was killed by a horse, the other by a yak. The elves failed to kill any members of the raiding party. We are now at war with the elves as well as the goblins!

Glovedburies, Moonstone, 353

The Giant Monarch Butterfly Symbol of Our Civilisation the Lone Vestibule
2nd of Moonstone

Winter is upon us! Doren Cattenatast is stumbling obliviously. It appears military duties have prevented her from taking it easy. What a pity. The manager’s put in an order for an iron chest and cabinet especially for her. Maybe we should build a tavern.

3rd of Moonstone

Libash has become a Swordmaster! Very impressive.

8th of Moonstone

The Sorcerous Arenas are sent on another raid to Wallast, got to train that ambushing!

18th of Moonstone

The Sorcerous Arenas are yet again back! They bring many spoils.

22nd of Moonstone

The Divine Boots set out to explore Toolsystem, the first mountainhome of the dwarves, established in the time before this Goblin Age.

24th of Moonstone

A hunt in the caverns proves successful and the queen gets some much-needed sword practice. The Giant bat is killed by Kulet Alathrobek.

War with elves seems like a proper thing to have happen with a dwarven fort.

Glovedburies, Opal, 535

"The Valley of Machines", the Symbol of the Ultimate Seal, Government of Glovedburies
5th of Opal
Disorderly conduct in the halls! Pump operator Ezum starts some fights. They're swiftly Convicted.
11th of Opal
The Divine boots return… with nothing. Reconstruction of the South wall in Quartzite Stones is progressing. The forecourt is still a bit messy, we have a few dozen goblin corpses left over from the last siege.

12th of Opal
New Artifact!

18th Opal
Meet our recently graduated Swordmaster, Ilral Riththiz! He feels satisfied with the accomplishment, but otherwise seems disillusioned with life after trauma in 533, when he fought and killed the Forgotten beast Mildil the Sprayed.

22nd Opal
Reports of a Jabber in the caverns prompt a hunt. The militia pours into the caverns and prepares to greet the wild animal.

The big bird flees in terror as marksdwarves send volleys of wooden bolts at it. The Jabberer is cornered, the speardwarf strikes and breaks the Jabberer's ankle.

It’s swiftly dispatched, with some unconventional uses of a crossbow.

It's been a quiet month, but a productive one. There's only Obsidian left and then it's New Year!

Glovedburies, Obisidian, 535

6th of Obsidian
Work on the tavern starts. Can’t have a proper fortress without one.

23rd
Testing for a little project begins. A piece of tunnel is designated to be mined out. Something to look forward to in the new year.

6th of Granite, 536
Ambush surprise arrives from the north.

Never seen that before! It’s an invading force entirely cavalry of tigers and horses, with elves riding them!

Must be from the elves. There are a lot!

They all appear to be terrified of us. Vucar Belalastesh enters the first martial trance. Even though they're riding tigers, none of the elves are wearing armor so the battle’s slightly onesided.

Looks like we're going to have our work cut out for us clearing the elf corpses off the whip vine, oh well.

7th
In the midst of battle, a Steel sword is bestowed a name.

And like that the battle is over and the elves have routed. Alas there was one fatality. Shorast Lolokasrer was killed in the attack. It appears they were not killed by an elf however but by a slip-up and nasty fall in the melee of battle. How tragic.
12th
I open the magma taps and... oh dear, oh no. That wasn't meant to happen. I'll be back in a moment when we've redirected some water on that.
Much better.

24th
We have new artifact, perfect for the fortress militia

Well it's been an eventful New Year!

Autumn and Winter, 536
12th of Limestone
So the Annual Caravan arrived. And it's time to take stock of our progress, there's been on a bit of a break from the diary entries.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
At present, our population is 134, not our highest but probably healthier for our FPS.
The royal quarters are now up to Tiger Trainer's high standards.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Work on the tavern behind the temples to Kadol and Nazum Foggyrains is almost finished.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The keep is fully kitted out for sieges.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
All pretty good
Here's a picture of the great temple complex of the channels of Jumping home to all faiths
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
25th of Moonstone
Ineth Biseksodel, Clothier, woke up on the 25 Moonstone thoroughly unaware of the tragic fate that would befall him. Two months ago, he had been promoted to the position of Civilian militia captain, responsible for keeping the citizens of Glovedburies in fighting form.
As he carried some llama wool cloth to the workshop he felt a strange feeling come over him as if a voice from another world were calling him...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Ineth dropped the cloth at the table and began demanding things for his creation.
Cut gems, plant cloth, cut gems, plant cloth
And that was when I knew it was going to be a few days. Glovedburies has many gems, that was a problem, but if there is one thing you cannot get in the Mountainhome, it's plant cloth. Being at war with the elves we don't trade for it and we can normally take the clothes off the bodies of the deceased goblins, in fact Ineth wore a troll fur tunic. So there was no plant cloth.
28th Moonstone
The Wealthy Pillars are called up from the caverns. and stationed at the clothier's shop. Ineth continues to mutter his demand for plant cloth in a far-off voice, detached from the peril he is in.
I expel him.

The Swordmaster Avuz Takuthatir (slayer of the forgotten beast Ner) makes the first strike by scratching Ineth's foot to prevent him from fleeing.  More blows land as Ineth runs for the nest boxes. His left arm goes flying. Bitten a Great Horned owl, Ineth goes berserk shortly before he is decapitated.
His blood soaks into the sand floor staining it red.
4th of Opal, 536
The Sorcerous Arenas have returned.

The first thing the dwarves see through the trees is the war dog Zefon Tekkudtabar. The first dwarf to arrive is the Wrestler Zuglar Betanavuz(Calmmines). and she's missing an eye.
And brings news of the squad's raid.
Bad news 1: they have no spoils.
Bad news 2: Atir Frostbolted and Inod Verselances won't be returning to Glovedburies, ever.
Now for the good news.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Good news: they killed 3 trolls and 21 goblins
The dwarves mourn the deaths of their comrades and a sombre mood of silence settles on the fortress.
But something that hasn't been felt in a long time in this world is felt with this loss.
And that is hope. Hope that there is an end to the Age of Goblins.
It is the beginning of the end of an age.
27th of Opal
The other squads have returned, among their number were the Queen Tiger-trainer and Baroness Silveri.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
RIP: Oddom Mirroredfame, who was struck down by the yak bull Dangleberry on the Hill of Meandering.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Now for our revenge against yaks.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The elves continue to provide useful training.
It's been quiet in the fortress without the nobles and with two kills each from the raid, it's probably worth sending them out more.
6th Obsidian
Forgotten Beast attack to round off the year
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
