Explosion of animals?

There was an elven caravan at my depot. They barely had anything, just a caged giant iguanas. There had been a lot of kea people stealing stuff at the depot so I stationed my militia out there. Immediately a giant saltwater crocodile with a name, a giant anaconda, cheetahs, tigers, bears, and many more appeared and started attacking. I have never seen anything like this. A lot of the creatures were cave animals too like hungry heads and giant cave toads. The picture posted above shows the aftermath. Has anyone seen something like this?

Did you upset the elves at all? Vast army of wildlife usually means you're being attacked by an Elf army. Although maybe not with the underground creatures.

We were in the process of trading and both elven merchants were gored by a yak bull (they were raised from the dead by a necromancer and now just crawl around the trade depot)

Gored by a bull? Sounds like the yak started it then.

For the record I've concluded this is the work of boogeymen. The militia had a few necromancers in it and they summoned boogeymen who then:
a) transformed into animals
b) summoned other animals
c) caused body parts and corpses to transform into other creatures
Inevitably these creatures became hostile to the militia causing them to summon more perpetuating the cycle.

My necromancers got in a fist fight which triggered another one of these. It was bad. There were hundreds of giant cheetahs, polar bears, and of course zombie variants of everything:

Most people were killed. Some were brought back as intelligent undead and now the fortress pop is pretty much necromancers and "putrid corpses":

Boogeymen are fascinating, haven't come across them all that often. Interesting.
