Refit and Repair 2, Veenland
Looking for the core thread?

Another day, and a long trip, but finally, the steam ship pulls into the port where you will be staying for many years. Veenland needs much in the way of security on the waves, enough to make a forign power think twice about any invasion, and more importantly in case a northern neighbor acts up against us. Even so, we will not be like the Boers and find ourselves under a foreign powers boot, and you will make sure of that.

Now, you are to answer pre war history choices and make a flag to fly proudly from our ships. The history choices will be made soon after a number join, and the answers will determine perks. After, you are to design a legacy fleet using four turns, with the design finished on the same turn automatically. After these four turns, you may spend a number of PP on the ships you designed before the first normal turn starts, followed by the first turn at war. Feel free to give a fancy name for the Navy as well, if you desire.

Spoiler: National Perks. (click to show/hide)

Veenland, Pregame History Turn 1.

The islands which make up Veenland were discovered in the mid 17th century, and colonized by the Dutch, with the lands further north colonized by the Spanish. The reason for it's colonization was partially due to it's strategic position to the west of south America, the thought being that the colony would be a vital trading point and a good staging ground in case of any future wars with Spain. Over the years however, the colony became something greater than a few military outposts and frontiersmen, but a proper, true colony. However, as the colony grew, it became apparent that this land of Veenland was...

1. A land of Milk and Honey, with fertile lands rich for growing and metal rich hills. The capital of the colony became a New Nieuw Amsterdam, as riches of gold and silver were found, as well as coal, iron, aluminum, and much more, leading more immigrants to come to the colony and much in the way of prosperity and prestige from such a small archipelago. And in time, many of the Lowlands people would come to live there, even from the Spanish controlled south who were of Flemish or Walloons and even some Germans.

2. A land with rich soil, great for varying crops, but little in the way of raw resources. Due to the soils good quality, the colony mainly worked as an agrarian one, it's lands full of plantations and their rich owners bringing much in the way of profit from such crops as sugarcane, coffee, cotton, tea and much more. Naturally, this lead to good profit from exporting the harvests, and a good deal of trade importing 'labor' from Africa.

3. A modest land. There really wasn't much good or bad about it, leaving a land mostly as a strategic outpost with a few business ventures. Even so, like most colonies of the United Provinces, the permanent population was fairly small, though many of the people who were there were soldiers and their families, simply there to guard the position.

Veenland, Pregame History Turn 2.

Yes, Veenland was a vibrant and wealthy colony, soon attracting thousands of Dutch, Waloons, Flemish, and even Germans to make their home there, either as farmers, miners, craftsmen or soldiers as the rich soil and hills provided plenty for the colony. For years, the colony would grow and grow, surviving and standing strong through the years. It truly was one of the jewels of the Dutch Colonial empire...Yet, then it all changed when the french Revolution came to France, and with it the Batavian Republic. While at first there was little to damper the great colony or the mood of it's people with the exception of those who were noble loyalists, with it came something worse. The British. And, even after Napoleon and his armies were forced back and William I returned to the throne, an issue came to the Dutch, that of the nations colonies which were occupied by the British. While there was hope that the colony would be returned to it's rightful owners, the Anglo-Dutch Treaty of 1814 proved to dash those hopes as the colony was reluctantly given to the British. It wasn't very long until the Veenland Crisis began, where...

1. Things quickly came to a head as a massive wave of English immigration and legal disputes that favored the new English settlers came to a head, and after a number of protests, things went violent when a British soldier panicked and opened fire, soon causing the rest of his fellows to follow suit. What followed was a long guerrilla war taking on lessons from the Spanish, and with it came much loss of life. Despite this, the loosely organized bands of revolutionary soldiers of Veenland were brave and fought hard despite the opposition. Though, their actions were fairly limited and small, mainly striking military convoys and the occasional patrol. Further the general population was supportive, though this lead to harsh crackdowns by the British on ordinary citizens, only causing more people to turn to the rebels and slowly the situation looked worse and worse on both the home front the international stage for the British.

2. Things came to a head over time, as wave after wave of English Immigration and biased legal actions in favor of the English caused much in the way of suffering for the Lowland people living there. Protest after Protest would occur for some time until a news story from an underground pro independence news paper got out that a massive corruption sandal had taken place by the English overlords, including tales of horrible crimes being done by a small group of soldiers involving young Dutch women that was covered up and censored by the government. This outrage soon sparked a number of violent clashes between English and lowlandic people until the military got involved and made the situation worse, sparking a major uprising that sized a third rate British warship and a fort...

Veenland, Pregame History Turn 3.

For a long time, the colony would be a thorn in the side of Great Britain, and the Veenland crisis as it came to be known would grow to be an increasingly uncomfortable, yet still minor issue for the British. While the rebels were loosely organized, increasingly harsh treatment only grew resentment for British rule and caused yet more minor pockets of resistance to prop up. Still, for the British it became clear that this needed to end sooner rather than later. And soon would send a large contingent of forces to the island, yet a number of incidents during their stay would only serve to embarrass the British and alienate the people further. And, with all the instability and anger directed at the British, a good number of English would start to flee the colony and instead head for Canada, New Zealand, or Australia. However, slowly but surely the majority of the rebel forces would start to be beaten back, and groups of them destroyed. Yet, with this, over time they would become more united and better able to coordinate. And further with time we...

1. With Support from American volunteers we were able to take a lot more bold action against the British, and even take land from them. Of course, we never could hold it for long, but we could still make them pay for every inch. Further, initially the British thought the Americans assisting us were actually turncoats. Still, when the British realized they were American volunteers fighting as their forefathers did, they swiftly tried getting the American's to stop and prevent any more support, something which backfired and caused the incident to get more attention on the world stage and in the American public, a good deal of the more jingoistic of whom were still eager to fight for American honor and influence, all for a good cause, and some saw this as a perfect chance to get revenge for fallen friends or family from the war of 1812. This caused the British much frustration and eventually resulted in the British withdrawing as the war became politically unviable as both they and the United States tried avoiding a war.

2. Managed to take a number of under guarded forts after a major strike in disrupting the supply lines on the other side of the island, along with some actions by some who managed to infiltrate the forts in question. We didn't hold them for long, but we didn't plan to. And with a trap utilizing a number of explosives on a timer hidden away, we were able to take out a good deal of troops sent to retake the fort as well. Some of the British called our tactics Unfair. Others Uncivilized, yet all agreed they were ungentlemanly. And with our successes, hope rose further in the common man, and many more subtly aided our cause through intelligence gathering. While the British wanted to bring the conflict to an end, the value of the island both strategically and resource wise drove the British to fight on a while longer, causing our soldiers to be hardened veterans, and a value placed on the forces of our indomitable army.

Veenland, Pregame History Turn 4.

With our many strikes and our major fight against the British, we became enough of a haste that it was far too much effort and cost to keep fighting us than it was to simply let us go. Of course, they tried to keep their stranglehold upon our people, but in time, after a long bloody war, we gained our independence. Naturally, the first thing to do with this independence was figure out a way for our government to be run, and a number of major leading figures have made themselves noteworthy in this war. Such as Lourens van Vliet, Eldert Schimmelpennink, Reinout van Diermen, Gustaaf ten Donkelaar and Hendrik-Jan Dangremond. However, more important than all of them was Herman Van Veen, who is seen as the main father of the nation. Of course, the major issue after establishing independence was simply the formation of government, and what type it would be. This naturally lead to a lot of discussion between these men, as they all had fairly different views and idea's for what should happen to the nation at hand. Yet, in the end...

1. The group of men, lead by Van Veen, would decide to form a monarchy not too dissimilar to that of the old Dutch Republic, back from before the French revolution caused this whole mess that brought so much suffering to Veenland in the first place. Of course, this lead to a number of debates as to who should be king, and there were two main contenders, but in the end Van Veen would be settled in as the true monarch of the fittingly named Veenland, which now had a second meaning to it's name given it's monarch. Needless to say, the monarchy had a lot of support at the time, and naturally, the king would be elected to be the first to lead the nation in it's entirety rather than any other, and it was clear that Tradition was one of the greatest values of Veenland.

2. The group of men would form a Republic, though that term is fairly loose. The nation would be ruled by a number of the varying leaders of the revolt and form what was basically an oligarchy with Herman Van Veen in charge. Those able to run for office were those of the families that brought the fight for independence to it's successful conclusion, specifically the big six who where the most famous. Their terms were practically for life, and really only the smaller levels of government were able to be accessed by the more common man. Even so, while there was a fair amount of nepotism favoring the six large families, but they deserved their positions clearly, and it was only natural for their children to be the first among all others to lead the nation to glory.

3. The nation would become a Republic with a large council lead by Herman Van Veen as it's first leader, and he would remain in power for years. Initially, he was a proponent of supporting the early unions that came about with industrialization, along with the government getting involved in business to ensure was able to properly serve the interests of both the state and the people, and had a number of other strange idea's. However, in time, he'd come to find himself agreeing with socialist policy as the idea's started to rise in the forties and fifties, Veenland being the that obscure country to actually that obscure ideology. And, some even today consider the rise of such idea's to be in part because of Veenland.
