Refit and Repair 2, Magna Mongadizafra

A new warm and sunny day once again comes on the horizon as your steamship starts to pull into port, the greatest port this side of the archipelago! Naturally, as engineers of the navy, this will be your home for some time. And this will be where our great nation can build and launch the ships that will allow us to be protected from any threat on the waves, be it further south, or elsewhere.

Now, you are to answer pre war history choices and make a flag to fly proudly from our ships. The history choices will be made soon after a number join, and the answers will determine perks. After, you are to design a legacy fleet using four turns, with the design finished on the same turn automatically. After these four turns, you may spend a number of PP on the ships you designed before the first normal turn starts, followed by the first turn at war. Feel free to give a fancy name for the Navy as well, if you desire.

Magna Mongadizafra, Pregame History Turn 1.

The Island nation of Magna Mongadizafra a fair ways west of South America that was discovered in the early 17th century by the Spanish, who naturally claimed the entire island chain as theirs due to the Treaty of Tordesillas, however with the war of spanish succession it was actually only partially colonized, specifically the northern portion of the island. Uniquely, the majority of the colonists were not actually Spanish, but instead a large number of Italians from the Spanish controlled portions of Italy, mainly people who were trying to escape the war on the mainland by going to the colony in question. While they were a part of the Spanish empire, they were noticeably different. And, they were mostly left alone until the mid 17th century when the Dutch started to colonize islands to the south. Still, the colony was mostly left be and held for strategic reasons as...

1. While the colony was extremely rich in both the lands soil and the gems and raw materials in the mountains, this was nothing compared to the vast empire on mainland South and Central America. This benign neglect worked in the colonies favor, and a number of Italians from home came to the islands for similar reasons as the first colonists, along with a desire for a better life due to the believed peace the islands offered. Though, corruption slowly grew in order to keep more of this wealth on the islands, eventually even resulting in it temporarily becoming a pirate haven.

2. While the colony had much in the way of resources and gems in the mountains, it's soil left much to be desired, and seeing how the majority of the population were Italian, it was believed to be best by the Spanish to simply leave it as a way to limit the holding of the Dutch in the southern portion of the archipelago. As such, while Spanish traders often came to the island to trade ore for food, the island was mostly otherwise left alone, with the forts and ports the places where one only really would see a Spaniard. Still, the lack of farmable land made most men fishers and later on whalers, and most men knew their way around the sea.

3. The colony really didn't have anything special other than it's ethnic minority. And, considering this, it was considered not a priority to do much other than leave it be. The mountain had a few sapphires, but otherwise it was mostly as valuable as any other island, and as such it was considered best to leave them be due to the island's small size and it's general lack of value outside of a strategic point. This mainly lead the island to be a fairly peaceful place.

But whalers stab at things from hell’s heart.
And I’d take the nation of sailors now over used to be pirates and implied corruption.

But I’m honestly ok with whatever and I’ll let madman break the tie (assuming he isn’t going for the boring and poor option).

Well-trained sailors are great and I want to actually succeed in going that route with our navy....though if I was to choose a second favorite it would be option 3, which seems to me to be some form of more...mystery-box approach. I am legitimately unsure of what being "mostly at peace" will grant us (maybe it's a downside that's going to mean our navy is understaffed/underfunded?), and I can only assume the sapphires in the mountains are somehow important. Though maybe that was just because the long-form (and much easier to shorten or spell out as necessary) name has something to do with "the great mountains of sapphire(s)" or something. I already can't recall.

Magna Mongadizafra, Pregame History Turn 2.

While the lands were rocky and not well suited to agriculture, the hills were as rich as any other Spanish Colony. Of course, this forced us to rely upon shipping a fair bit, bringing in fruits and other assorted crop to the island, while many lived on a diet of varying seafood, and in time our capital would become as famous as Nantucket for it's whaling and fishing industry. Even so, before such fame came to be, the colony had much in the way of raw resources, both valuable and practical. Even so, other than the occasional fleet to take the gems back to Spain, the colony was left be to it's own devices, and there were no real issues...Until a Italian named Napoleon came around and took over Spain after France. This caused a major amount of unrest in the colonies, and essentially caused the collapse of the Spanish Empire. With all the Spanish Colonies breaking away, we decided to...

1. Declare Independence. Naturally, with our colony being one that required much in the way of food and being relatively small compared to the other Spanish colonies we were able to do so fairly peacefully. The few Spanish soldiers on the island either joined us, or left for home or another colony. The biggest issue was trying to get legitimacy and seen seriously as a minor power in the region and not merely a part of one of the recently made independent colonies in South America.

2. Declare Independence. Naturally, with our colony being one that relied upon the sea, we took quick action to take a number of Spanish Ships and prepare them for war. While there was fairly limited attempts to try anything against us, it was stopped by our skilled sailors and ships. Though, realistically, we hardly had to fight much due to our importance being extremely lacking in comparison to many other colonies that became nations, along with the British causing issues for the Spanish

3. Remained a part of Spain. While some liked the idea of independence, others thought of such things as foolish. The Spanish Government hardly bothered us, and we hardly bothered them. Why would we change that? Of course, that didn't stop the Spanish from suffering in the war against the British, but that hardly mattered. After all, our island was still peaceful and our own, and our autonomy quite high purely due to the distance involved. Even if there were times where things were a bit disagreeable, these were worked out without rash action.
