Magna Mongadizafra, Pregame History Turn 8.

We celebrated the unification of our ancestral homeland. And why wouldn't we? Even if our governments have major differences, at heart we are still Italians. While different from the mainlanders, much like one from southern Italy are different from the north, we are still Italians. Of course, we aren't a part of Italy and are our own nation but still, the point still stands. Over time however, our southern neighbor who seemed to have gained the Ire from the United Kingdom over the years has had a number of...concerning issues about them. Ever since they managed to fight the British and declare independence after a long grueling guerilla war, they had gone down a strange path, one that lead to them becoming a socialist state. Regardless, their 'republic' practically run by unions has caused tensions as of late due to...

1. Socialist Agitators organizing Strikes for a number of key industries that we need for our country to function. Naturally strike busters and police were able to put things back into order, though a number of confrontations caused Veenland to openly advocate for further strikes in the name of revolution. This, combined with the political beliefs of a number of the arrested strike leaders led to the natural and clear conclusion that Veenland was responsible, and this was very openly stated by a number of politicians and newspapers. Needless to say both the general public and government weren't too happy with Veenland involvement in our own affairs.

2. A fishing vessel that went off course were accosted by Veenlandic naval vessels and sunk, and they had the gal to not only keep it's crew detained, but demand that we stop fishing in their waters. This, naturally, caused a large number of fishers in protest to sail into Veenlandic waters intentionally, and was encouraged by our admittedly more...jingoist members of government. Needless to say, this has escalated a bit out of our hands, though it is their fault that all of this happened with how blatantly they sank the vessel. Needless to say, this has only angered Veenland further, which has sent a number of threats regarding our fishing ships.

3. The attempted assassination of the Presidente Canziano De Girolamo by the Socialist revolutionary Zetico Giannotti. Of course, we cannot prove that he was directly hired by the Veenlanders, but given the fact that he was able to escape prison and we believe he managed to make it to Veenland he surely has to have some ties with them. Needless to say, this alone should be enough for war, but it gets worse, as a massive conspiracy to completely destroy our nations government was found. Of course the evidence for this conspiracy is admittedly a bit flimsy, there are enough facts a part of it that can be proven true, or aren't able to be disproven that it has managed to take the media and government by storm.

Magna Mongadizafra, Final Pregame History Turn & First Pregame Design turn.

The sinking of the Lena Lo Schiavo by Veenland was a key point of our tensions with them. Of course, they claimed that the ship rammed one of their cruisers when it tried escorting them back to Magna sea's, and that the ship had crossed into Veenland waters multiple times. Needless to say, our government and fishers weren't having any of it, and in retaliation to our just action, they claimed that we were tyrants rather than a true republic due to our treatment of workers, pointing out a number of minor strikes that, due to socialist agitation, turned violent. Of course, they framed such as the police acting against them, and naturally threw in a few ridiculous claims of further oppression while calling upon the people to demand change and use the weapon that was the strike to fight against such a thing, and the socialists of our nation did exactly that, were we were easily able to deal with them and restore order, though this caused tensions to reach a boiling point, and it's expected that war is practically inevitable...Thankfully, our navy stands strong.

Glory to Mongadizafra, Glory to the Republic

Well in a effort to get some design's on the table and this thread moving I propose the creation of a harbor/coastal defense monitor to serve as a floating battery, light transport for marines in wartime and harbor inspectors in peace time.

I know this design isn't exactly the best for any specific role being under armed and under armored with no clear purpose, I simply see it as a early piece of utility ferrying small amount of troops and providing them with reasonable shore bombardment capabilities, at least until we get naval mines in which case the extra space could be used to carry a substantial amount of naval mines while still not diminishing its firepower.

For reference, most discussion happens on Discord. Right now the rough plan on Discord that has gained consensus seems to be 5 techs + 2 ships (ships LAST so they benefit from all the techs). This allows 1 revision, but the 5th tech can be dropped as necessary to gain three more revisions.

Fundamentally, the best way to not die is to not get hit. However, sometimes you get hit anyway. In fact, a lot of the time you get hit anyway, because your enemy is doing their best to try and hit you. Dodging isn't always good, so surviving the hit is the next best thing. And the best way to survive the hit is to keep the projectile on the outside of the ship, through possessing sufficient armor. And the less mass of steel gets you to the "sufficient" mark, the better your ship can be at doing other ship things, like dodging incoming fire or carrying bigger guns to shoot the enemy with. To that end, we've invested heavily into the steel industry. Through refining our face-hardening process and the material composition of the armor plate, we've managed to improve the ductility of the non-hardened sections of armor and improve the resistance of the hardened portions, to make them less prone to shattering during a shell impact. The simple refusal of the armor plate to break into chunks improves its resistance to an incoming shell as the monolithic plate is better at absorbing the energy and dispersing it. Now, the addition of less plentiful elements than iron and carbon definitely increases the cost of our armor plating a bit, and the capital investment necessary to have this scale of high-quality face-hardening also increases cost, but the defensive advantages are plentiful and important.

I figured as much about discord however I'm strongly in the camp of discord ruins the point of forum games, I've gotten too much joy reading through old forum games to really like this general trend towards discord of these last several years. Not condoning anyone for it I just prefer to use the forum as the point of communication so to speak.

Anyhow my personal preferences are pretty irrelevant I know I'm fighting against the tide
