My giant chameleon aren't breeding
« on: February 25, 2021, 02:05:01 pm »

Hi I'm kind of new to DF but I've read all the wiki pages I could find but still the giant chameleon arn't breeding in my setting.

I've got 4 trained giant chameleons, 2 males and 2 females in an enclosed (walls, doors) pasture (zone),
I've got 4 Nest boxes for the eggs (I have no experience with non birds and Nest boxes so maybe the mistake is here?),
I waited a lot (2 years at least) but nothing.
Is there a minimum space they need to breed? they have 5X6 and the Nest boxes are all in the pasture (on grass of course)

It might be that 2 of the males or females are gay but how likely is that?
Is there something I forgot?

Thank you all in advance,
my dorfs are waiting to ride chameleons to battle

Have you checked the output of the DFHack “gaydar” command?

Also, from what I understand, fortress mode dwarves aren’t able to ride mounts in the current release.

Really hoping somebody puts this in their signature.

Maybe they can't even spot each other, blending into the background as they do?

I can just (not) see them riding into battle, though...

gaydar doesnt work.. it gives an error:

edit:
I managed to make it somewhat work: gaydar -all works and there it says that at least 2 are not gay so it's not it.
I tried using fix-ster fert all and I hope now they get it on... we'll see

Thanks for the help!  8)

And you have verified that they haven't laid eggs and those have been collected? This also leads to the next question: Have they laid any eggs at all (all egg layers act as domesticated chicken, i.e. lay eggs regardless of fertilization or not, so there should be a steady stream of eggs).

I haven't had chameleons, but I have had snakes and crocodiles.

Not sure how interesting it is to you guys but I now have a (trained +) army of some 90 giant chameleons.. they aren't born children so Ill have to domesticate them the longer way and I went into a butchery frenzy to off all fat, weak and not war worthy color-shifters.
I'll leave a male and 2 females incredibly muscular specimen. It wont be long until I have an army!
I think to try train them to war before they are domesticated but I'm not sure how much fun I want to have....

To summarize:  I think it was the fix ster fert command that helped.
