Interest Check - A Succession Fishing Village
« on: March 17, 2021, 05:32:05 pm »

What happens when seven useless dwarves that smell vaguely of fish abandon the mountainhomes and set up shop in a tropical paradise? Let's find out! Looking for overseers and dwarfings.

Our goal:

Build a grand fishing village. Our infrastructure shalt be built upon the water, lake town-style, connected by piers and boardwalks and barges, and we shall feast every day on naught but the finest of seafoods.

Our embarkee's:

  • A fisherdwarf
  • A fish cleaner (and occasional cook)
  • A fish dissector (who dabbles in doctoring)
  • A pot maker, (the pots are for putting fish in)
  • A hook crafter (who could maybe stretch their hand to other metalsmithing)
  • A spear fisher, (stabbing stuff is a universal language) and...
  • A builder of fishing huts. (And other things. But mainly the huts)

Does it have to be a lake specifically?  I'm partial to Beach Forts myself, and embarking at the Ocean has the potential for a lot more !FUN!.  That said, if you find a lake with some Good/Evil tiles, that would be solid.  This seems like a good opportunity to refamiliarize myself, since my last serious game was a certain Tower that shant be named.  Oh, and the volcano I ran into the ground.  But I digress, count me as tentative.

This might be a good mod for a fort like this.
I like it! I will do this thing.

Yep, that's the plan. A 3x3 embark with 8 tiles of tropical ocean and 1 of coastal forest somewhere in the untamed wilds.

I plan to turn weather off as well, at least for the starting turn. Other overseers may forget or choose not to do so and that's fine. I'd just like to delay the onset of rain-based stress problems a bit, since it's kind of a pox on all surface forts.

Please consider that you cannot fish in salty waters. I might just throwing that out since that's the kind of thing you don't want to discover two years into your embark :u
Also a scale crafter might also be a good idea; scales are good to decorate stuff and can used like bones to make low quality limb armor

Are you sure? The wiki says you can fish in oceans:

Fisherdwarves catch vermin fish from available water sources: murky pools, brooks, rivers, lakes and the ocean.

That's strange. Maybe I'm wrong then, but I could never have my people fish in the ocean, while they would happily fish in every other water source. Apologies if I gave wrong informations, maybe it's my save, or maybe it's me

I fished out of the ocean in my most recent save.

Just caught a "raw sole, ♀", a "raw brook lamprey, ♀", and a "bat ray, ♂" from salt water. Seemed strange to have a brook fish in the ocean, so I double checked to make sure it was salt water.

Hmmmm. Surface forts are the sort of things I wanted to try out, but never did (or postponed with idle thoughts of making humans playable). I'm game. If you're assembling an overseer list, sign me up.

I know I can't join in right now, but if you go forward with it I definitely would in the future
