This is for real "practicalists".

Putting points into the following skills is silly:
Wrestling
Throwing
Ambushing

It takes only a few minutes to level them up.

Rather, there's also not much need for weapon skills. Competent or nameless weapon skill is usually sufficient, especially if you use a piercing or bladed weapon. So long as you get a decent starting weapon, it's all good.

Plunk something in swimming and the rest in shield and armour. Especially shield. That's what's going to save your life, other than wrestling that is. But again, it only takes a few minutes to get relative skill in wrestling.

I usually get proficient swordsman, proficient armor user, Novice swimmer, and put whats left in wrestling(too lazy to train it manually)

Then I acquire a good old two handed sword by some means or another, fling my shield at some random creature(I don't like being able to use two handed stuff with shields.)  And then go kill stuff. Being careful to sneak when I suspect archers are present. Even with dabbling sneaking you can usually get pretty close to stuff.

Seems to work well.
