[IC] Trespassers v2: Monster Hunter: Rumblings of the Past
« on: August 07, 2021, 10:32:17 am »

(OOC)

The forces guiding the castle through the endless void had finally brought it to a destination; it was a hard feeling to distinguish, but the residents felt somehow more grounded than they had previously.

Upon venturing outside, the members of the group that elected to go exploring found themselves on a rocky coastline. The castle had nestled itself in a large and particularly dense outcropping; it was difficult to see much else without moving some distance away. Once they did, however, they discovered that the coast bordered an enormous forest, with unfamiliar cries and strange silhouettes dotting towering trees covered in vines and other growths. Not far away was unmistakably a human fortification built against a cliffside, a sturdy log wall and gate facing them. Some buildings could be seen above and beyond, and smoke rose from various spots within, but it was just a touch out of distinguishable range.

Mira

Stepping out of the now parked castle, Mira took a glance around their destination, ensuring that the perimeter was secure before properly walking out of the outcrop to get a more proper look at the area. Though she was admittedly surprised at the sheer size of the forest that the castle had landed next to, she didn't pay much more attention to it other than a glance, instead focusing primarily on the distant settlement. There wasn't much of note in their immediate area anyways, so that indicated that their current location of interest was the settlement. Or at least, that's where they could begin their investigation.

With that thought, Mira shifted her body, allowing her to look back at the group as she waited for one of the more proper officials to take the lead. There wasn't much need for her talents just yet.

Newton

Newton flutters out of the castle, surrounded by all the tall trees and heavy jungle.  Fearing the obvious danger of his surroundings, Newton sticks very close to the walls.

Eventually, after a minute of this, he gets too curious and begins examining the base of the walls.  How did the castle get here?  Did it crush plants like it landed from a great height?

Kraken

Kraken scurried out, hurriedly stuffing ammo (he hasn't been aware he brought extras but he wasn't going to look a gift horse in the mouth) into his pouchs. Seeing that someone had gone on ahead he waved at them, yelling. "Hey... Shit, I forgot their name... did you find anything of note!? Any hostiles or friendlies!?" He didn't wait for an answer, continuing to approach Mira as he spoke to get an idea of what he was seeing himself.

Mira

"Not that I can tell. There is a fortification just over there, but nothing strikes out as hostile nor friendly at the moment" Mira commented as Kraken approached, flicking her eyes towards him as she spoke before immediately returning to scanning the area.

Kraken

The operator nodded, wondering if he should ask her name or if he should just assign her a nickname. Maybe "Guts", she looked like a Guts. But instead of doing that, he just shrugs. "Then should we head over now or are we waiting for something?"

IP

Following behind the rest of the group, IP moved around the heavy gunner's side at a distance. At the man's orders, the android began to check the surroundings for anything of note - especially hostiles.

With a nod, Captain Saejik pulls down his macrobinoculars and hands them over to one of his bodyguards for safekeeping.  He turns on his heel and heads down from the top of the tower, the Stormtrooper pausing to stow the delicate instrument in its carrying case before jogging to catch up to the others marching in step around the Captain.  "This place is where we will act next," He decides, "They seem to have done well for themselves in such primitive conditions, but if precedent and the tales from our new allies have anything to say about it, they will doubtlessly be in dire need of medical assistance and military support."

He fires up his commlink, and directs the Renown to find a stable, geosynchronous orbit over this settlement, stowing it as he walks down the ramp and onto the forest floor, taking in his likely allies for this operation.  Mira, the touchy woman in vaguely Mandalorian-esque armor, well, she'd be a good distraction for any enemies keen on close combat at least.  A battle droid, possibly useful, possibly trouble.  No way to know, but memories of what well-built custom battle droids could do during the Clone Wars meant he couldn't help being a bit unsettled by the thing.  And what looked like, wonder of wonders, an actual, genuine, professional military man.  Would the wonders never cease?  Maybe this wouldn't be quite as trying as he'd feared.

"I believe we were waiting for me," Saejik states, "I'd wanted to get a look at the settlement from the top of the castle before we set out.  We might not have such a good vantage point again, not without fighting some horrible local avian for it anyway.  There's nothing else of note in the vicinity that makes itself apparent to visual scans, or anything else even vaguely recognizable by the scanners as technology or civilization, so I believe that wooden fortress should be our destination."

Kraken's response when he saw the actual robot come up beside him was rather subdued on the outside, his eyes widening and his mouth opening before he wisely decided whatever it was would be incredibly stupid. So he just turned back to inspecting and waiting for all to show up with only occasional glances at the droid. On the inside however, Kraken's mind was a hurricane of activity. Is that a robot? It has to be a robot, I mean they're made of metal.... Unless it's like a lithoid kind of deal.... but like, that's definitely a robot. Do they speak? Do they feel? Do they dream of electric sheep? Gah, focus, you can ask later. And so on. Perhaps he shouldn't have been that surprised, given just earlier he had a conversation with the other robot, 6D. But the shock of the clearly robotic being compared to the very much human looking one likely was at fault for that.

When the next set of foot prints arrived, he didn't turn to look to hopefully hide the cool he was rapidly losing. Which is why when the man spoke, Kraken only started to turn around when he gave his response. "Makes sense, I couldn't see anything either but.... E... Empire?" Once again he likely shouldn't have been shocked. But it's difficult to get your act together when faced with the real in the flesh version of characters from one of the most popular movie series in the world. (Minus the last five or so years.) This, of course resulted in his rather lame question which was left hanging for a few seconds before he cleared his throat and continued with more confidence, straightening up to give a hopefully more acceptable response. "Uh, I agree with that assessment sir. From where we are here there seems to be a lack of modern technology but no hostiles, fauna or otherwise. Those both being said, in my experience that would mean the natives are likely to be physically above human and/or have domesticated large and dangerous local fauna." He's quiet for a few moments, before adding on at the end, "Operator Kraken, at your service."

"Captain Saejik, of the Star Destroyer Renown," The captain snaps a brief salute off towards Kraken; he's not sure what the other soldier's rank is, but it always pays to be respectful to special forces operatives.  It's quite useful to be on their good side, for a wide range of reasons, "I must say, it will be refreshing to work with a professional military man this time.  I wouldn't call the team I had for my first mission with this group incapable, quite the opposite in fact, but they lacked a certain amount of discipline and decorum.  That is a fair point about the locals, though.  We'll have to be on alert."

"It can't possibly be worse than Felucia or Darthomir," One of the Stormtroopers says, managing to sound a bit pained through the static of his vocoder, "Please, please, please let it not be as bad as Felucia or Darthomir."

"We can only hope," Saejik sighs, "It was bad enough handling the casualties after the fact.  Still, Kraken and myself should know our stuff for jungle operations, droids can't get trench rot or whatever other wonderful diseases are likely fermenting in this place, and Mira...  Well, she'll have to learn her lesson about accepting advice and assistance sooner or later, and I should be well-equipped to treat whatever she does to herself in the mean-time."

Kraken fired off a crisp salute of his own, listening to the officer's assessments at a proper parade rest. Of course, this was concealing the sweat accumulating on his brow as he realized he suddenly had expectations placed upon him. He wasn't a fuck up of course, you don't get hired as a high class mercenary and then world class counter terrorism operative if you're a fuck up. But that didn't stop the voice in his head, telling him that he wasn't good enough to live up to this random stranger's expectations. And that simply filled Kraken with dread. But, the imperial wasn't a jedi (Kraken hoped) so his thoughts were contained entirely in his head as he spoke. "Indeed. Given the coast and the look of the trees it's likely a tropical environment so insects are likely to be an issue, along with conditions deteriorating weapons, but hopefully we'll be able to maintain them as needed.... Speaking of, since this is the first time we've met I should probably explain my capabilities."

Kraken's hands got to his gun, hefting the large weapon with apparent ease as he uses it as a visual aid as he explains. "This is a M249 Squad Assault Weapon, a slugthrower I believe you'd call it, this variant in particular being designed for use by a single gunner without need for a whole team. I'm specialized in medium to long range fighting, especially in urban environments as part of Counter Terrorism operations and assaults. To assist with these operations this weapon in linked with the Nodens targeting system," He turns the gun to show the second, smaller ammo pouch with his self guided ammo. "This system is able to track enemy combatants using assistance from a squad even when the operator would be able to see the enemy, and then use these self guided bullets to strike them even behind cover. Additionally I carry grenades, a more primitive form of thermal detonator in essence." With that all said he returns to rest, as he looks between the officer and various soldiers for their reaction.

IP raised her hand to get Saejik's attention, looking over to the armored woman to make sure she hadn't gotten too far away already.

"Should one of us attempt to accompany her, in case she encounters difficulties? I'm equipped with a healing module, and can enhance her abilities in combat if necessary..."

"That might be wise," Saejik says to the droid, "She may take less offense to you than one of us.  Though we should probably get moving."  He starts walking towards the settlement, the Stormtroopers falling in behind him.

"A primitive projectile weapon mated to an advanced targeting system?  A curious juxtaposition of technologies.  Really shows how technology development can vary between worlds.  As for myself, I served as a medical officer during the Clone Wars and I've kept my certifications up despite my transfer to a command position.  I theoretically can bring the full might and firepower of the Renown to bear to support us, but in practice my ship suffered extensive damage to her electrical systems we're only just beginning to repair in the transition here.  Hyperspace anomalies are extremely dangerous and we were lucky to survive.  Worse yet, without ready resupply we need to be conservative with our TIE fighters.  The Renown will still be quite helpful to us, but not to the extent one might expect having a Star Destroyer in orbit to be."

"Nothing wrong with a good frag grenade," One of the Stormtroopers says.  It's hard to tell if it's the same one that spoke before, as they sound remarkably similar, and are all pretty much exactly the same height, "Propaganda says we all carry thermal detonators, but those things are expensive and extremely destructive.  Especially for fleet deployments, it's better to have something that isn't as likely to cause a hull breach."

IP nodded at Saejik's statement, beginning to approach the armored woman, checking to see if she needed any assistance, but still keeping her distance.

Mira

Though headstrong and straightforward, Mira was not hard of hearing, the red orbs underneath her helmet narrowing at the others, "I can still hear you all" Mira commented with an annoyed tone, letting Saejik and his Stormtrooper escort take the lead before falling into step behind them. The thought of marching off had crossed her mind, but Mira reasoned that it would be far more effective to talk to the locals and figure out where they needed to start looking, rather than comb through the forest on her lonesome.

In all honesty, they shouldn't be complaining in the first place. She was effective, and her record proved it.
