Newton bursts out of the treeline where he was hiding, observing the fight.  This creature, this Rathian seems quite dangerous.  But not too dangerous.  Although it might be slightly riskier than Harass or Dooodge, Newton goes for the shiny-producing Yoink! move, aiming the black etherial claws through the creature's heart.  Newton uses Yoink!, aiming to put one of the Raithan's offensive actions on a 3-turn cooldown.

???
Several Hours Earlier...
To anyone not paying attention, it would've been difficult to notice. A dark portal in a dark forest, hanging silent in the amidst the branches of a tree so tall it very nearly rivals the burnt out husks of skyscrapers on the portal's other side. Indeed, the portal in the forest went completely undetected by it's numerous denizens, but not to the thing on the other side.
Quote from: 2045/08/13 20:35:53
Road Block Detected. Movement detected in road block. Traffic flow?
A spindly, charred spike of metal protrudes through the portal, followed by another, and another, until the full creature made it's way through the portal. While not as large as the other beasts present in the forest, it would've towered over any humans. Perched atop it's many, spiderlike legs sat a thin, wiry thorax, supporting a strange head with 3-multicolored eyes that only someone not native to this place would recognize as a traffic light. As soon as the being's last leg makes completely leaves the portal, it snaps shut in an instant, leaving the being alone in the towering wood.
Quote from: 2045/08/13 20:36:07
Road lost. Seeking road. Movement identified as wind in tree. Seeking traffic flow.

Now
Quote from: 2045/08/13 23:50:27
Several pedestrians located. Traffic flow found.
A faint green light illuminates the forest around the hunters, all too distracted by the incoming Rathian to notice. Silently, the spider creeps forward, ready to greet them in whatever way it knows how, when the Rathian appears and charges forward in a barrage of flame and meat, injuring several of them.
Quote from: 2045/08/13 23:50:33
Several pedestrians injured in crash! Red detected! Traffic flow found! Protect traffic flow!
The creature leaps out from it's hiding place within the bush, and somehow, in spite of every law of physics and general common sense, grips the much larger dragon with several of it's limbs and manages to toss it away from IP!

Stay In Your Lane!
Target 1 enemy that made an attack on an ally this turn. It is tossed far away, taking damage equal to ½ the damage inflicted to highway haunter’s ally during that attack. It cannot attack Highway Haunter or that ally until after it’s next turn. 3 turn cooldown. (Activating on the Rathian's charge damage on IP.)

The creature turns it's head to look at the smaller being it had just tossed the dragon away from, and a small, tinny voice that's just barely audible over the din of combat rings out from it.
Quote from: 2045/08/13 23:50:36
"Wait."

Ancient Forest

Abruptly, out of nowhere, the wyvern is sent careening through the area with a shriek. She crashes painfully into one of the forest's many thick trunks for [11] damage, narrowly managing to avoid toppling over completely.

Brynn places her scaly posterior between her non-scaly friend and their scaly foe, who has, by now, recovered enough to give the new assailant a hateful glare.

Mira redoubles her offensive, blade biting into the Rathian's tail once more for [47] damage while she's reeling!

Newton, meanwhile, somehow manages to steal the Rathian's ability to spew a trio of fireballs. The flames in her mouth sputter, but don't go out.

IP takes a second to do drugs, kids, recovering [20] HP.

Rathian, meanwhile, seems to be inhaling deeply, embers gathering in her mouth as she glares at Mira. Her tail lashes threateningly toward Newton.

Coral Highlands
Venus

Varied wildlife seems to occupy the area, from small, bright hummingbirds to things that looked a bit like phosphorescent jellyfish save for the fact that they floated through the air. The blue raptor-like creatures, however, appear to have taken an interest in Venus. He'll probably need to deal with them one way or another.

Saejik, Cell, Kraken

Investigation of the area makes what happened clear. Whatever left the tracks - something large and somewhat bird-like, at least by the shape of the feet - got into a scuffle with something much larger and heavier, or at least the scattering of tracks seems to imply. There's no corpse or trail of blood, though, so the two opponents seem to have separated without landing any decisive blows. It looks like the loser fled north; it's hard to say where the other went.

"Hm.  Interesting.  Well, I'm not much of a tracker, unfortunately," Saejik sighs, "Whatever won this fight would logically be the apex predator of this region, but we only have tracks leading us towards the loser.  Well, needs must, I suppose.  Perhaps if we locate the loser of this fight, the winner will return to finish the job.  It would be logical for it to follow up on its victory, and attack the easy prey that a wounded opponent might represent."

Captain Saejik will HUNT and follow the the bird-like tracks.

Spoiler: Brynn's Status (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Loadout (click to show/hide)

She sensed the mana coursing through mysterious construct before she ever saw it fly out of the underbrush and into the she-wyvern. Thankfully she'd resisted the urge to blast it just long enough to find it wasn't immediately hostile to them. No telling how long that would last though. Of almost equal curiosity was the strange bird that'd been following them thus far- she knew not exactly what foul ritual it had performed on that Wyvern, as it plucked out a glowing jewel that now floated above the beast's head. But the tell-tale sputtering of the wyvern's flames sent an involuntary shudder ran down her spine that flicked her tail with equal parts trepidation and instinctive disgust. She'd not noticed before but there was something... not right about that crow... raven?

No, didn't matter right now. The she-wyvern was winding up again. Brynn raised Arisen and brought it down in a burtal overhead arc, her body remaining precisely where it was as part of the blade vanished midswing and reappeared above the Rathian's tail...

Brynn attacks the Rathian's Tail with Arisen, dealing [6d10+14] Slashing/piercing damage! She also regenerates 12 hp.

What even is that?  Is that some kind of metal monster?

Newton pulls up a moment to keep clear of the newcomer.. the tall piece of movable architecture is not something he is familiar with.

Well, whatever is going on, the pole-creature seems to be on our side.

Maybe we should ride on it.. it might be more comfortable than the part-dragon?

Not after that throw!  We should never ride on something that can throw something that big that far.

Agreed.

Newton then flies over to examine the Rathian.

Uh oh, looks like it isn't happy!

The giant crow looks at the unhappy really giant flying lizard-like creature.  This always happens.. steal something from someone, get attacked by them.  Time for the appropriate response.. Panic.

Doooodge, avoiding the next two incoming attacks. Newton flies about rapidly, trying to avoid the oncoming tail-strike, while shedding a perhaps excessive number of feathers.  At no point does he take his eyes off the creature, alternating between looking at the ember-lit mouth, the dangerous-looking spiky tail, and the mesmerizing properties of the Yoink! produced bauble.  Even though it's an item simply produced by Newton himself, to him it is as attractive as.. well, basically anything, be it a sparkling diamond or an unattended metal fork.

Erratic Driver Detected! Public Safety Hazard Reported to [Error! Not Found!] Removing Erratic Driver.
The huge, mechanical spider turns it's head back around to gaze hatefully at the Rathian glaring at it. In a smooth motion, the strange being crouches low to the ground, before springing into the air in a colossal leap that makes it appear to vanish from where it stood. With nearly 3 seconds of hang time, the spider comes crashing down atop the Rathian's head, it's soft, aluminum arms doing what they can to harm the dragon. It's green eye is blazing along with it's red now, and everyone feels like they can move a little bit faster.

Leap!
Deals 3d6 + Dex (12) damage. Deals 1.5x damage against enemies with a higher init.

Perk Activated (To no mechanical effect!)

For a brief moment, Mira was thoroughly caught off guard by the creature that burst out of the forest and crashed into the wyvern. It didn't resemble any sort of 'natural' animal, and certainly didn't resemble anything she had seen on this world so far. In that moment, the idea of this thing being the one responsible for agitating the local wildlife crossed her mind, but the hateful glare of the Rathian forced Mira out of her thoughts. She could figure out what the hell that thing was in a bit, for now, it was on her side, and furthermore, she needed to handle this wyvern first. Thus, she lifted her sword in a two handed grip, holding it perpendicular to her head, dark smoke quickly enveloping the blade as she prepared for the Rathian's inevitable attack...

Mira uses Lunar Stance, canceling the next attack made against her and dealing 6d8+3d6+14 damage to the attacker. Mira now has 4 Magra and will gain an extra point in two turns.

IP briefly glanced at the spider, then returned to her initial task of eliminating the wyvern, pulling out her pistol and firing a burst of rounds at the creature.

IP fires upon the Rathian with her Auto 9/45, dealing 6d4+7 damage to it.

Coral Highlands

Kraken Hunts with Saejik

The operator didn't have much to add to the officer's assessment, though he wasn't so sure that the other creature was the apex just from one fight they hadn't witnessed.

Venus

The attention of the raptors had never ceased as Venus ventured deeper into the wilderness; Venus was wary of the intent behind their watching eyes, and the beasts came in rather concerning numbers given that he was operating at his lonesome. More importantly, he was unfamiliar with the scope of their capability or their level of intelligence.

Perhaps he had overestimated the primal hunger of the wild. He moved slowly, his mask defying no expression, as he turned back toward the direction from whence he came: their response might indicator that their predatory gazes saw in him an intruder, or a meal. He readied his paintbrush beneath his garb, ready to react should any come ravening for him.

Ancient Forest

Brynn delivers another hefty strike with her greatsword for [62] damage! The Rathian shrieks in pain and anger.

Newton flails about in an evasive fashion.

IP fires another burst of gunfire in the wyvern's direction, peppering her for [22] damage. She also recovers 20 HP.

The bizarre metal spider leaps atop the Rathian, spiked legs digging into her back to deal [28] damage.

The Rathian rears back with a deep inhale. With a roar, she jams her head forward, spitting a massive ball of incandescent, burning powder at Mira. . . only for the black knight to effortlessly slash it out of the air, and continue the motion into sinking a strike deep into the carapace atop the Rathian's head for [55] damage! The she-wyvern shrieks once more, then turns to flee to the north!
Spoiler: Status (click to show/hide)

Coral Highlands

Venus returns to the rest of the group. The raptors, on seeing a larger number of foes, elect to cease following him, slinking away into the undergrowth.

The other would-be hunters note that the tracks seem to head toward a sheer cliff face. Squinting at it, they can see the telltale marks of clawed feet landing on the near ledge repeatedly. Looks like it'll be a bit of a climb.

Hmm, looks like the rest of them are beating the creature up good.  Maybe it's almost finished?

While thinking, Newton continues zipping around.  Eventually, he darts in, aiming the immaterial black magical claw towards the centre of the creature, right in the guts.  The magic zips out, seeking the answer to the question.. "What does this creature do to defend itself?"

As it does so, the existing firey bauble winks out.

Yoink a defensive move from the Raithian.  This should at least put the default Defend move on cooldown.

"Fleeing so soon? How unbecoming of a dragon!" Brynn shouted, raising her blade. "Those wounds are nothing, I could heal from them in mere minutes, if not sooner! Even a mere wyvern should stay and fight until it loses something of GENUINE IMPORT!"

She accentuated the last two words with yet another brutal stroke, again displacing it across space to let the sweetspot fall directly on the Rathian's already mangled tail even as she made to flee. Brynn couldn't help but feel a twinge of disappointment, though. She'd a feeling the she-wyvern was but a pale imitation of a true Dracoform, little better than a haughty beast. But even so, she'd still hoped for more vigor and ferocity than this. How could an apex predator prove so skittish?

Brynn attacks the Rathian's Tail yet again with arisen, dealing another [6d10+14] damage and hopefully severing it!
