Lost artifacts

How do I find something that reads in legends as lost in the glittering fields. I know where the fields are and its a small region. Will it be in a location of note or will it be anywhere?
Is it in the world?

Artifacts never truly disappear (even if you smash one with a bridge in fortress mode, can show up somewhere else given enough time).

It may be in the world - physically - or it my be just floating in the code somewhere. I would search the Glittering Fields for any caves camps or hovels, though such a search is likely to take a long time - even in a small region.

Your other option would be to start up a fort and send dwarves off searching for said artifact. Otherwise, enough time should make it fall into the hands of somebody.

DFHack may have some commands to help you, but I wouldn't know.
