"In the north corner, Highsoar the bird magician. They seem to be an eagle right now!"

"In the east corner, Tob the illusionist! They're a unicorn wearing human clothes, or at least that's what it looks like!"

"In the south corner, the human in the colour-changing hat is Vermilion the colour mage!"

"And finally, in the west corner, Bleep the goldfish. How is it breathing out of water? How did it become a wizard? What does a stupidity magician actually do? We don't know."

The four of you are evenly spaced around a large sandstone arena. The wall around you is dilapidated and broken in places, while the centre of the arena contains a huge pillar of stone rising out of a deep pit. There are four stone bridges crossing the pit up to the top of the pillar, one in front of each of you.

On your wrist, fin, talon or fetlock is a bracelet with a digital display, the letters AUTOMAGE stamped on it.

"The rules are simple. Each of you has a magical affinity. We have taken thirteen spells from that affinity, and coded them onto playing cards. The suits are Colours, Illusions, Birds and Stupidity. Every turn, your bracelet will display the cards you are dealt, and you're allowed to cast any single spell from the ones you see on the bracelet."

"Of course, you're probably wondering why we're bothering to deal you cards that aren't from your specialism. After all, you don't know how to cast spells that have nothing to do with your affinity- that would be impossible. This is where the poker comes in."

"Every turn, instead of just selecting a spell from your own affinity to cast, you can play a hand! The highest scoring hand played (according to standard poker rules) will be cast by the Automage you're wearing. Of course, each hand has five spells, but you can tell the automage to combine as many of them as you like into one spell! For example, if you played a winning hand with "summon dragon" and "blizzard" in it, you could summon a blizzard-breathing dragon!"

"This lets you use other wizard's spells, or even bizarre combinations of spells from different disciplines, provided you win the turn. If you lose, however, you don't get to cast anything! Feel free to keep your moves secret."

"Any questions, or are we good to go?"

"You could say that. Bigger, more impressive spells tend to be assigned higher numbers and picture cards. Doesn't mean they'll be more useful, though."

(I'm just checking we're all clear about what'll happen. I'll pm you five spell cards, and you can either use one from your affinity, or try and win the hand, in which case you can use any or all of the cards in your hand as one big spell. You get a new hand each turn, and the game continues until one or fewer players are still alive.)

So we can cast any spell of our type, or play a hand of all five cards?

Can you choose to keep any of your cards, or is it five new cards every turn?

Yes. If you choose to play a hand, specify which cards you want to go into the spell if you win.

New five every turn. And don't bother card counting because I'm not going to bother taking cards out the deck, and also it would probably be pointless anyway.
