Mysterious books lying outside forts

I had it happen twice now that I apporach a fort and then find a random book lying on the ground outside. I just wondered what was up with that?

The one fort I didn't enter, the other one I went in and killed the inhabitants - nothing remarkable, just some humans armed with normal stuff. They didn't have any other books.

Artifacts (including books) sometimes get scattered on abandon or reclaim. I've seen this happen with books on reclaim in fortress mode often, and wouldn't be surprised if that happens in adventure mode too.

Does it mean there's some sort of reclaiming process going on at forts when I arrive?

More likely it was abandoned in the past. If there's humans there now, they're probably trying to conquer it or loot it for artifacts.
