Humanoids can use human-pattern guns and armor, which is all we can make and all we WANT to make. This is 40k, they are going to never be more than second- or third-class citizens and barely-equipped cannon fodder for our militaries, might as well make it easy to slot them into their appropriate role.

The Xenos are Humanoid and all the more sinister for it, but they've yet to be purged. Given that they wouldn't be classified as such (by the Imperium) if they weren't on two legs, they're Bipedal and move much like humans do.

What is their size, relative to humans?

The Xenos are Diminutive relative to mankind, though not necessarily weak, and not necessarily frail. Appearances can be deceiving and many men have suffered hideous death at the hands of the Xenos and their lies.

What is the Xenos' place in the food chain?

Solitary Herbivores: In their evolutionary past, they roamed the wilderness alone or in small familal groups, picking berry analogues and trying to avoid anything too much larger than them, which is most things. This doesn't mean they're easier to control. Those tiny hands are capable of heresy beyond comprehension.

Photosynthesizers: They are... technically plants, which eases logistics considerably but rather disturbs the more openmimded humans, as opposed to the majority that want to see them burned for their genetic horror.
