"Yeah. Need an axe that'll split a man in two more reliably. What about it?"

[Now Playing: TearRing Saga - The Old Man at the Armory]

From the back of the store, the two female warriors can hear a very familiar laughter. The giant of a man that is the shopkeeper then ducks slightly under the backroom's doorframe to return to his counter.

"Ah, dear, I do hope you were not refering to Uncle Almen. The only thing I want to see split and slashed here are my prices, ahaha ♫"
He places a pot of blooming yellow lilies on the corner of the counter with a jolly smile on his face.
"My trade partners are delighted with your performance in the Great Wyrm Forest. With that miscreant gone, few will have the bravery to paint themselves a target on their backs while Sir Dunas is roaming around the countryside."
"... Although, a little bird told me you will be gone the day after tomorrow. I sure hope these news will not spread, it could become a disaster otherwise... Ah, I fear that I must wield arms once more and volunteer as a local guard while you're gone."

Artair's a bit.. taken back by the casual admitance, though Almen gives her something to focus on.

"I hope it will be peaceful while we're away. The King has called for the Five Knights, and we're going with him."

To Rhain, she gathers herself and speaks.

"I mostly wanted to se if you were.. Alright after that last bit of the battle. I prefer to end things cleanly when I have to fight, so 'a weapon to split a man in two' is a bit.."

"I feel you might need a vulnerary more than me, given how injured you were even before you came charging past. Is it really that important to charge blindly ahead into their midst?"

"I wouldn't chop you in half without a decent reason, Almen. The bandits should know to keep their heads down and attached to their bodies by now, too." She turns to Artair with a frown.
"I don't need criticism from someone who hasn't figured out that there's no such thing as clean killing. Worry about yourself."

Emilia, being deep in thought as she ponders Rhian and the others, snaps out of it as Dunas approaches her.

"A letter from my family? Did my brother send it?"

"My, my, that is very good to know, dear Rhian. Although..."
The shopkeeper chuckles sweetly. The joyful aura that seems to constantly surround him suddenly ceases.
"... I wonder if you could chop me even if you had a decent reason."
A few seconds of silence as he gazes onto Rhian, a surprisingly serious expression on his face. Then the corners of his mouth start wrinkling before he bursts out in laughter.
"Ah, sorry, sorry, it was impossible for me to pass this opportunity. Haaa, I'm such a silly goose!"
Almen sits down, radiantly smiling. He points towards a tray of freshly-baked cookies on the counter. You could swear it wasn't there mere seconds ago.
"These are on the house, so please enjoy, lovely customers. I'd love to hear theories about why clean killing is an impossibility, or why it is possible. It is a morbid topic, but oh, I just can't reject the thrills of an enlightened discusson~"

"A letter from my family? Did my brother send it?"
"Indeed, from the count palatine of Phaelan."
The knight hands over the latter.
"... Are you still thinking about what happened in the cave, Lady Emilia?"

Rhain's ticked a nerve.

A knight's duty is to bring honor to their family, serve their liege lord, and protect the innocent. That includes protecting comrades when they get in over their heads.

"I do my duty in combat. I simply remind you that you are not the only one on the battlefield when you rush in."

When did? I suppose merchants learn their own tricks..
"Well.. I prefer to not use any more force than is needed. I'm mostly trained in dueling and speed, so end it with a final cut, or simply wound them for another to finish.."

Rhian looked at Almen for a moment, not quite sure what to make of the reply. He laughed it off, but that had been strange. . . she got the impression there was more to the man than he'd have you believe.

"I know full well about a knight's duty, Artair. Enough for my purposes, at least. Tell me: what happens after that final cut?"

Maria had wanted to get her hands on a new book for her growing collection of knowledge, but that probably had to wait. She had a promise to fullfill and that had priority over her own desires for now.

She headed through the camp in search of the magnificent Lulu, the dark mage being certain it wouldn't even be hard to track somebody down who was this outgoing in their choice of fashion.

"now now where is that woman when you need her. Don't tell me somebody this colourful can just disappear in a crowd like that..." The mage thought to herself while looking

"They won't get back up. Quick, clean. A single blow ends their life. Such is what happens." They'll never be able to see anyone, do anything, say any final words.

"They fall over. Their lifeblood spills on their clothes, their skin, the ground. Your sword. It mixes with their sweat and the dirt. If you cut their throat, they start to choke on it. Their body shuts down. Their bowels release. They'll probably be alive for a few seconds afterward, too.

Does that sound 'clean' to you?"

Rork takes the time to wait and find Dunas after. He decides to leave the shopping for a different time, as despite him knowing Dunas had let him off with a light leash, it didn't feel right to use the company's funds on himself yet.

He had a question on his mind regardless. What drove the man he called Master to trust a former bandit who had even betrayed them, even temporarily? It was confusing. Most nobles, he imagined, would have gutted him on the spot. The smarter ones would wait until after the battle was over to do it, but he'd end up dead all the same. So, he waited until the man himself was available to see him, and presented himself as properly as a recently reformed merchant beater could.

"Ah, Lord Dunas? Mind if I uh, talk with you?"

"Somewhat. It's nothing, Lord Dunas."
Emilia quietly reads the letter.
"What could he need?"

Surprisingly, it seemed to be a lot harder to find the colorful magician. It seemed as if if the little gremlin didn't want to be found, she was very adept at making hard for anyone perusing her. Eventually, from behind Maria she'd hear a familiar cheerful voice.

"Oh Maria! Hooooow's it going!~" Lulu greets with a big wave, "You've been looking all around the place fora bit now. Did ya lose something? If ya need help, all it will cost is another slice of cake dept!~"
