Forum Games & Roleplaying Hall of Fame
« on: June 13, 2022, 04:14:02 am »

Welcome to the Forum Games and Roleplaying hall of fame.

This thread is to keep the Forum Game List thread less cluttered and more focused, while we move nominations here. A sister Google sheet to the one used there is used here, which itself was created to combat neglect that older lists would eventually succumb to. (The same formatting in the Forum Game List for Category and Theme will work in this one too.)

Rules:

How do I nominate a game to the hall of fame?
-Simple, you post a link to the thread and a brief description of the game.

How do I vote for a game?
-You vote. Preferably with a bold +1. When a game has 6 votes, it will be added.

But what if a game sucks and I don't want it in the hall of fame?
-Then you can vote against it, preferably with a red -1

At this time, this thread is meant as a supplementary thread to the Forum Game List, and users will be directed here from there. If you would like this thread to be stickied then you can petition for that here, but it may not be necessary. General Forum Games can exude just as much Excellence as those found in the RTD Hall of Fame and Mafia Notable Games Archive, that's what this thread and doc are all about.

Thank you Enemy Post for help setting this up.

Damn! Hexland! That was years ago.. I think I was in middle-school when that was running (why in that thread did I say I had a real job? So bizarre.. lol).

Just for the nostalgia, I'll have to give it a +1. It's a shame that the images are completely gone now, however...

Please only quote the games you are voting for, makes it easier.

Edit: quote added for clarity.

I was referring to Lidku's post, before the edit to make it a vote. It was just a quote and comment before, so I didn't know whether to count it.

I know you view yourself as the organizer of this thread, but why don't you vote on something? There's no rule saying your vote shouldn't count.  ;)

Something that's been on my mind lately is Nuke's Demonhood 2. I didn't read all of, but not from any dip in quality. Just life. What I did read was something that felt very eldritch, but more Howard than Lovecraft, very high energy, very exciting.

If you're looking for some deep cuts, here's a few.  We all stand on the shoulders of giants, so present standards, some of these may be more "influential" than good.

Caesar's Godhood http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=55726.0

The game that really pushed "God Game" genre on this forum back in 2010.  Godhood itself would get eight games over the years, and inspire countless other games.

Iituem's Godhood V: Legacy of the Titans http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=97735.0

The fifth game in the Goodhood series, was GM'd by Iituem in late 2011.  He'd then go on to become a prolific GM for many years, including running some of the more (in)famous games such as Hive Race and Wands Race.

10ebbor10's Salvation : A Spaceship suggestion game http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=116652.0

Again 10ebbor10 ran so many games in this period it's hard to single out 'his best', but later in 2012, 10ebbor10 began GM'ing one of his longest running games, a Sci-Fi SG.  (In 2013, it got a spin-off: Wagon Train to the Stars.)

10ebbor10's The Glorious Design Bureau of the People http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=131248.0

In Sep 2013, 10ebbor10 would launch a proto Arms Race.  Primitive by modern AR norms, you can see so much of the DNA of the genre emerge here.  Derived from "The People's Weapon Design Bureau: Нет электромагнитные пушки животны" from Spring that year, the GM put enough structure together to make a SG sandbox into an actual game.

Sensei's Arms Race http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=152099.0

The first true Arms Race launched in Summer 2015.  Two sides, PvP, map, resources, designs, revisions... Sensei put together the mechanics to make the genre.  Given how spectacular battle reports tend to get in present AR's, its fascinating how humble the writing was back in the day.

Nirur Torir's Kaiju-COM http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=140300

Nirur Torir is one of those GM's that's been around these parts for forever.   Such a huge body of work over the past 10+ years, but in Summer 2014 Kaiju-COM popularized a high-effort genre that I always love following.  (2019's Kaji-com 2 by Devastator was a great reboot that ran for a year and a half.)

Nuke's Demonhood 2 was already nominated, so I'll +1 that.   Nuke's such a solid writer, and his AR's are always great to follow.  Being an AR nerd, I'd definitely nominate him for NUKE9.13's Battle for Aljadid http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=168246.0

Late 2017, AR in SPAAAAACE.  Other than theming, this AR is also known for popularizing 2d4 over 1d6.  Mechanically, that's something virtually all AR's do now.

Draignean's Arms Race: War of the Cinder Spires http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=164853.0

You wanna know why people get excited when Draig launches a new game?  Cinder Spires from Summer 2017 is why.  While he was known for RTD Deviation-22, Draig setting an AR in an aetherpunk setting with fantastic writing and PvE element remains one of the most fondly recalled AR's among the community.

Sensei's Intercontinental Arms Race http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=163937.0

Running for two years straight across two forums, Sensei's ICAR was the most popular and enduring AR ever made.  Actually his third game in a trilogy, the first being the original AR in 2015, and the second run on Spacebattles.com.  A helluva an accomplishment to spend years fully completing a series.

These were very influential for me personally. Iituem's didn't last very long, but it was very good while it did, and the series in general was fun.

Even though the OP says no Arms Races, I feel that's not a fair exclusion to ARs or people reading this thread- the purpose of a Hall of Fame should be to give folks a lead as to old games they might enjoy reading, which shouldn't rely on that person already being familiar enough with the genre to go look up its (defunct) hub thread.
Anyway, these three Arms Races are (in my opinion) the most important for the development of the genre, and are all worth at least skimming through.

I will also give a nod to Iituem/evictedSaint's Wands Race: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=163275.msg7394357#msg7394357
Which is notable for A) Reaching completion naturally (something few Arms Races (or forum games in general) achieve), and B) Being fairly easy to read as an observer (I've heard this from several people who read it post-completion). It's also interesting to see the evolution that happens over the course of the game: the battle reports develop more complexity, the 'votebox' is introduced half way through, and the behind the scenes mechanisms change (it originally had a program that resolved battles, but this proved unworkable and was ditched in favour of manual resolution).
