Dwarf Fortress - The World Of Bones - The Adventures Of Callisto

Callisto decided that, before going on her new quest, she would reenter the mead hall and try to recruit some of the soldiers and others inside.  After all, if she was going after what seemed to be bandits having a GROUP of adventurers with her would even out the odds.

As long as she didn’t need to pay them.

And none wanted to join her.  Some because their duty was in the mead hall and some because they feared not getting their share of the adventure and the rewards.  In other words Callisto was a nobody and they didn’t trust her.

So she decided to start on her “Quest” with nobody but herself and her elephant.

As night came she came up a hamlet named Tattooeddawned.  At least there was a river there.

She ate some, slept till dawn, and then noticed some nearby camels.  She might need more than spinach on her quest and she tried to sneak up on one to attack it.

She wounded a few but even hurt they ran faster than she could and she gave up and went to the river to refill her skins.

She found the hamlet full of ruins and abandoned buildings.  Another place of broken dreams and empty purses.  Just a lot of camels and horses and a few poor human farmers.

She marched all day and passed another hamlet called Rinsetuft.  She checked out the populated areas only to find this hamlet had houses that was well cared for.  Interesting.  She didn’t stick around so she had no idea HOW this hamlet was so rich and well taken care of.  What did they trade in?

Late afternoon they came upon another river where she stopped to search for something to hunt or gather.

She found and killed a snake which gave her one piece of meat.  Enough for one meal.  At least the river gave her some water to drink.

Luckily they were almost at Notchfaint.

They had to make camp one more time.  But they were only a few hours away.  When they woke up, after a small breakfast, Callisto and her pet marched northeast towards Nothcfaint and the bandits.

When they reached the monastery Callisto pulled out her iron mace and buckler.  Time to fight.

Next chapter - will she die?  Will she murder them all?  Will they have loot?  Will killing a bunch of people she didn’t know get her a place in polite civilized society?

Dwarf Fortress - The World Of Bones - The Adventures Of Callisto

Well, time to hunt down the bandits and kill them all!  While searching for the vermin she found a iron statue and a native platinum pedestal with a die.  Surrounded by potato plants.

She examine the iron statue.

She grabbed some potato plants to see if they were something that could be useful.  They were, sadly, not something she could eat.  Though she did find some spinach.

Then she continued her hunt.

And she found a building.  She heard no noises from inside.  But if the bandits had killed the monks who use to live here….maybe there was nobody left inside to make noises….

Of course…if the bandits were still sleeping?  Or out raiding?  She went in.

The building turned out to be empty.  Two rooms that were emtpy.  Maybe a looted warehouse?

There was no sign of any monks or bandits.  Though she did notice a troupe of gray langurs in the distance to the north once she exited it.

She started to circle outwards.  Maybe they had a camp?

She found some tracks of weasels but no bandits.

She found a statue and a alter.

Interesting but not very useful.

After that she sighted some one-hump camels.  But where were the bandits?  Was she in the right spot?

She stopped to check her map.  It suggested there was another building.  Which she soon found.

The building had been a meeting hall or dining hall.  Maybe for the monks?

She checked the map and headed east to find another building.  One with beds.

This one also had Kobolds!

Well, seems she had found the vermin.  But when she looked them over she noticed they were unarmed.

So they were likely just thieves.  Was she meant to kill them?

She tried to talk to them but…well, Kobolds had no language.

Callisto frowned.  The Kobolds were thieves yes, but these were unarmed and pretty harmless.  Killing them seemed…unjust some how.

She tried to ask about the local leader.  Maybe she could get them to move to parts unknown so as to stop annoying the local governments.  But it was useless.  And she had a job to do.

So she attacked.  She killed one and wounded the others who fled out of the building.  She examined the dead one and, somehow, found out it was named Shrulin.

When she left the building the wounded Kobolds had returned and almost ran into her.  Funny enough they ran past her and into the building.

Soon another Kobold was down on the ground.  Dead.

The other wounded Kobolds ran away so Callisto went to examine the second corpse.  Seemed this one was named Dabagafayrsnin.  What a weird name.

Callisto waited in the, what she decided must have been the barracks for the monks, for one of the Kobolds to return.  One of them did and she ambushed it as it came into the southern doorway.

She killed it easily.

Its name seemed to be Pagachimus.

She decided to wait again and see if the last Kobold decided to come back to the building.

It would sneak in, she would hit it with her mace, and it would flee.  But each time it was hit a bone would be smashed or a major organ would be smashed.

Finally, the last Kobold named Lrukustraybin, was killed.

Callisto sighed.  Her quest was over.

She examined Lekla.

The pet was not looking well.  Her trunk had been damaged by the dingos and these Kobolds had also wounded her legs and feet.

Callisto, herself, had long since healed and only had scars to show she had ever been in combat.  The Kobolds hadn’t touched her.

She decided to sleep in the building till dawn the next morning and then return to the hamlet to announced her victory.

But she found it hard to sleep in the building with all the dead Kobolds.

So first she butchered them and took their skulls.

Then she moved south.  As far away as she could from the site.

At the nearest hamlet call Tinferries, she piled the skulls together in a clearing outside the hamlet, used them to fuel her campfire, and went to sleep.

By morning, as she ate a breakfast, the flames had turned the skulls to ashes.

Their bodies were butchered and their skulls destroyed.  It was unlikely they would come back as undead or ghosts.  Callisto hoped.

Also Lekla had healed.  At least the wounds she had received from the Kobolds.

Now to tell the hamlet of what she had done.

Dwarf Fortress - The World Of Bones - The Adventures Of Callisto

After checking out her map -

she headed southwest towards the hamlet of Luteclustered.

The return was somewhat boring.  She saw some animals, made sure to keep her skins full of water, and ate spinach and the snake meat.

She also washed herself off by swimming across one of the rivers.

She was even was able to hunt down a male ostrick and collect a good amount of fresh meat.

Soon she was stepping into the Furious Savior.

After telling the tales of how Callisto murdered some Kobolds in Notchfainted in cold blood the Lady was happy to make her a Hearthpeople.

Callisto now had a job!  And she was given her first assignment.  To kill a leopard that threatened the people.  It was named Squashedflashes and lived in the lair of Ivygloomy in the Sewers of Abating.

Callisto sighed and pondered how she was going to hate her first assignment.  She asked WHERE Abating was.

It turned out to be a half day’s travel to the northwest.  The Lady Busbel happily marked it on Callisto’s map.

Callisto went outside and checked the map.  It truly wasn't that far.  Well....now she was chasing down a big cat.

Dwarf Fortress - The World Of Bones - The Adventures Of Callisto

First, Callisto asked if anybody would go with her.  Now she was an employee asking co-workers to come with her the hope was many would come along with her.  Surely they wanted to hunt down and kill a cut kitty?

And nobody would join her still.  They seemed to be worried about sharing the glory and loot with such a ‘large band’.

Callisto wondered if that was a ‘fat’ joke directed towards her elephant.

So she gave up and started on her journey.

Northwest it was!

She passed through a hamlet called Steppebooks.  She only stopped to refill the skins.

She stopped for the night with the Ivygloomy only a few hours ago.

The next day, after a small meal, she was off again.

According to the map at one point she had passed it.

She kept looking and even had to have another meal while looking.

And then she found it!

Seemed to be a ramp that stank into the sand.

The tunnel was…well, empty.  And not really a sewer either.  Or maybe a VERY old sewer?

Seems the big cat wasn’t at home.  Now what?!?!?

Maybe you could wait around a bit and see if it comes back.

Or look for tracks. Or wander about the area in the travel screen looking for any * to investigate.

Both good ideas.   First I will patrol the travel map.  If nothing happens I will sleep as close to the "Sewer" as I can and see if I get attacked in my sleep....better sleep with the mace close.

Dwarf Fortress - The World Of Bones - The Adventures Of Callisto

Callisto decided to patrol the area around the…Sewer?  More like a den.  Either way the big cat MAY be hunting.  Which would be why it wasn’t in the den.

Wait, didn’t leopards hunt at night?  Either way, she started to make ever bigger circles around the den.

She noticed movement to the west heading right towards the Sewer and turned around to try to meet the unknown individual or group.

It ran and Callisto, with her pet, gave chase.

It was a LEOPARD!

Callisto mounted Lekla and charged the big cat.  She hoped to reach it before it fled.  They had the good luck to hit from behind.

Eh….that was easy.  Well, Lekla killed it to be honest.

She butchered the dead cat.  Took its meat and skull.

Maybe she should deliver the skull to her Boss Lady?

She slept in the fields of the hamlet of Steppebooks after having dinner .  Which was in the Blue Hills.  Called that because of the…hills.

She had breakfast the next morning and refilled her skins.  And also have some sewer brew.  Just to help keep her warm.  Part of the river had been frozen.

When she got to mead hall, before entering, she took a swim in the nearby river to wash off any blood or dirt she might have picked up during her travels.

She was now wet but clean.

After greeting Lady Busbel, and giving her a report, she gave her Liege two gifts.  One was the skull of the, now, dead big cat.

AND a gater bone scepter she just happened to have in her backpack.  The Lady didn't really seem impressed.

Then Callisto went to ask Anur about anything else she could solve.  Every time she asked the Lady about troubles the Boss Lady always, and only, talked about her kidnapped son.

Turned out there were REAL bandits bothering the people.  Anur said their camp was to the north and marked it on Callisto’s map.

Callisto went outside and checked the map in the sunlight.

By the duck flies it looked about two days away.  Maybe three.

Callisto checked her inventory.

She had enough meat for the journey.  And, as always, would have to keep an eye out for water.  And her equipment was in good shape.

All her wounds had healed and she was doing well.  Still, bandits would likely not be Kobolds.  They would also be armed and dangerous.  She might want to think about how to approach the camp.

Maybe at night?

-----------------------

OOC NOTE: The patrol idea worked.  Thanks!  The silly cat had me chase it for about half a day!

Dwarf Fortress - The World Of Bones - The Adventures Of Callisto

Of course, before heading out to hunt down the bandits, she asked a few of the people inside the mead hall if they wanted to join.  They all turned her down.  Mostly with the excuse that their place was in the mead hall.

What they seemed to be doing at the time was telling each other bad jokes.

Callisto sighed and left the mead hall.

Outside she decided on a title for herself.  She didn’t just want to be known as a maceman.  So she decided on the title…Cleaner.

She also gave her pet the nickname ‘Kitty Killer’.  She then headed, with her pet, north.

On the way north she found a river, where she refilled her skins, and something else.  Peat.  Wasn’t that used as fuel?

They moved north again, crossed the river as it went west and found a flock of giant cockatiel.  Which of course they attacked because Callisto was always worried about having enough rations.

They picked a large one and killed it.  Then butchered it.  None of the other birds reacted.

Now she had too much meat to carry.

By afternoon she was within walking distance of the bandit camp.

She decided it was time to take a little nap, let darkness come, and then kill the bandits in a surprise attack.  Hopefully.

She slept four hours, ate a meal, started towards the camp, dropped the extra meat she could not carry, armed herself with mace and buckler, and guided the elephant through the darkness.

She wanted to scout out the camp, see if the bandits were sleeping, before attacking.

As she come closer to the camp there were trees which she tried to use to hide her approach.

She started to notice a chest and a bag.  She was on the edge of the camp.  Now to kill!

After searching she realized that the camp was the chest and the bag.  She took the silver and gold coins.  And a pair of copper gauntlets.  And pondered what to do next.

She started to circle and BEHOLD!  A sleeping goblin.

Callisto mounted her elephant and stared down at the goblin.  There was no sign of any weapons outside of a knife.  HAHAHAHAHAHA!

She butchered him, took his knife and much of his money, then went back to circling.

After a few sweeps she started to wonder if the one goblin was the ‘bandits’.  And she wanted to find a place to keep some of her coins.

So she claimed the bandit camp as hers, naming it the Camp of Clearing, dumped some of her coins and extra items into the chest.

She even put some meat in it and the extra waterskin refilled with water.  She only needed two skins anyway.  Maybe she would be this way again or maybe future adventurers would need it?

On the way to Lutecluster she was running low on meat and decided to hunt on the journey.

They totally failed to kill a giant Barn Owl but Callisto did find some wild spinach.  Oh yummy.

She returned to the Furious Savior tired but healthy and told the tale of how she killed the…er…’bandits’.    Well, how her pet killed the bandits.  Well, one bandit.

Then she slept for eight hours in the mead hall.  When she woke up she was starving and thirsty.  So she had some spinach and water.

Everybody in the mead hall was sleeping.  Mostly on the ground.

Callisto realized that as a Lady of her own holding she may no longer be a heathperson of the
Lady of the Furious Savior.

Was she an unemployed Noble now?

Dwarf Fortress - The World Of Bones - The Adventures Of Callisto

Callisto had a series if short naps till the sun rose into the sky.  Then she asked for her position from the Lady, who made her a hearthperson again.  Then Callisto asked for her next quest.

Callisto frowned.  Wasn’s a Ettin a two headed giant?  Even her pet might have a hard time with such a monster.  She tried to find out more about the creature.  Mostly where to find it.

She didn’t bother to ask anybody to join her and went out to check her map.

It did not look that far away.  Hopefully she could find some animals to hunt on the way.

Callisto sighed and started marching northeast.

She traveled through Tattooeddawned and refilled her skins at the river.

From there she moved straight east, traveling through the hamlet of Rinsetuft.

As she approached where the ettin lived she noticed a lot of ibexes.

And ravens.  Lots of those.

She also discovered her bags held no more meat or spinach.  Uh oh.  The next animal she saw, who was not her pet, would become rations.

Funny enough she found a small guppy.

Could she eat it?  Nope.  She dropped it.

As she headed north she started to find a LOT of stuff on the ground.

She searched them for anything interesting, of use, or something she could eat.

She found some items of value and also ate a mussel.

After picking up a LOT of cool stuff she found a cave entrance.

“Crap,” she whispered to herself.  Funny enough she sensed it but could not FIND the entrance.

They climbed to the top of a nearby hill top and still found nothing.

Maybe if they set up camp and went to sleep for a few hours and searched at night?  Could they find it sleeping?

“If I can’t find the cave entrance I can’t find it sleeping or not,” she mumbled to herself.

Problem was she was getting drowsy.

But after much searching about the hill where all the items was dumped about she found a cave.

And the Ettin got the drop on THEM!

Then it was all a blur of action.  The Ettin attacked Callisto a couple of time and missed.  She was too fast.  But its strikes against Lekla were landing.  In fact soon the elephant was having problems breathing!

As the Ettin was pulling her pet apart it finally let its guard down and Callisto smashed her mace into its right lung.

Then Lekla was dead and the ettin could focus all its might on Callisto.

Then there was darkness.

Yeah.  The Ettin was way above my paylevel.  Not that I was getting paid.  I should of just looted the place and see if any of the items was a treasure I could return to the Lady.  But don't worry - I have plans for The World of BONES!

Dang. I quite enjoyed Callisto's adventures. RIP.

But, I guess, with an ettin and all, it was inevitable.

But don't worry - I have plans for The World of BONES!

Waiting to see what more the world has to offer!
