You don't need to pay to continue exploring, the cost is that you don't get the loot yet (and should your adventurer die, you will not get it at all.) It takes one turn (day) to return from most expeditions (overgrown cave included.)
You didn't roll an encounter, hence there was no one to fight. About 20% of events are encounters (fights) and there are 4-7 events every day. You are only guaranteed an encounter in the Arena or the Boss Stage of an expedition.
