Honestly the Wolf is a case of finding it early on and actually getting a lucky hit in.

Wolf is (at least in the Overgrown Cave) a boss and you literally can't find it earlier on.

As a question, can a small bone and sandpaper be combined into some sort of trade good necklace?

No. Are you trying to polish the bone or carve it?

As a question, is the throwing axe recoverable?

Yes and no (mostly no.) But if you come back to town it will be restored for free. I am aware that makes 0 sense.
