The Global Monthly - APR 2206

NEW OTTOMAN EMPIRE MAKES MOONFALL!
With the sacred sling now operational, the first wave of ships were launched to the lunar surface. Built to withstand lunar impact at speed, the base components were sturdy enough to survive any ancillary fire from anti-orbital devices. From there it appeared that Ameripol changed tactics, adopting a less apologetic direct fire approach onto the landed material. "While we are disappointed by Ameripol's actions towards our material, we're not exactly surprised," said project lead. "The outer hull of what will become our base is simply impenetrable without the access codes. The sooner Ameripol stops their violent game, the sooner we can land a manned crew that can complete the base and begin work on the Lunar surface." Other experts disagreed, saying that the bombardment from Ameripol would eventually crack the hull of the base, but timescale estimates or this ranged from one to six months.

RUST BELT COMPLETES FIRST ASTEROID CATALOG!
Scanning the local asteroid groups for potential mining locations, Rust Belt prospector Dan Wilson reported that their first catalog of the asteroids close to the Earth/Moon system had been complete. "The biggest decision was deciding which rocks to prioritize in our scan. We made that decision as a group, considering proximity to Earth, and potential availability of rare alloys and fissile materials. Simple scanning bays we placed on the newly finished Iron Bridge in tandem with some 'scopes on Earth let us see what these stones actually have." It is estimated that two more catalogs would be necessary to search for all the asteroids sufficiently close to Earth, but there are expected to be diminishing returns as they already selected the ones most likely to contain ore. While the current results of the catalog remain secret, two stand-out targets are an Earth Trojan named 2133 TK42, which is reported to have a pleasant mix of iron, rare ores, fissile ores, and water ice, and a newly discovered body near Venus' L2, named 2206 GG9 which appears to be a captured comet with generous amounts of fissiles. "I didn't even consider looking at the Venusian L-points," admits Wilson, "but yeah, there it was. Great find."

AMERIPOL ASTEROID MINING PROJECT ALMOST SUCCEEDS!
A mining drone, manufactured on the lunar surface with materials shipped from Earth, was launched to an asteroid which was passing rough half-way between the orbits of Earth and Mars. Upon being asked about its design, Chief Designer Isabel Rubio said, "The probe is capable of drilling into a rocky surface and extracting rocks and ore which it can capture. From there it can spring itself off surface and later be recovered. It's designed to be compatible with shuttles currently in design to ferry material from the inner solar system to our lunar base - and this is the first step of that vision." The drone almost landed on to its target, but just nearly missed. It now remains in co-orbit around the sun with the asteroid, where it can later be recovered, but as of right now it's drifting among the asteroids, where it may one day land on one entirely intentionally.

SRA SCOUTS THE LUNAR SURFACE!
Redesigning the probes to be lighter, take quicker yet less detailed images allows for a survey of the lunar surface to be completed before the probes were destroyed in more firing control accidents on the part of Ameripol. While the moon is littered with potential mining sites, there were a dozen or so that were densely populated enough to warrant an expedition. Various areas were found with iron ore, rarer alloys, fissiles, and isotopes. "We're very happy with the information we have." said imaging lead Caleb Fowler. "The nature of this attempt meant that we would rely on quantity over quality, but I think we got everything we needed to see. While secondary testing will need to be done before we completely release our findings to the world, we hope that this will help inform the next step in peaceful lunar colonization."

ANALYSIS OF FRAGMENTS OF ALIEN COMMUNICATION BEGINS!
From what little of the alien communications have been decoded, scientists at Bifrost have already been hard at work to try to figure out what it is they are trying to communicate. "It's a daunting problem, really" said contributor Leonard Ohlson, "because we don't ever know what these communications are for. They might be for a particular device, inputs designed to be executed by a computer, a spaceship, or simply read by one of… them." Some assumptions could be made - if the signals were given off by passing shuttles, they were either signals to or from recipients on Earth. If those recipients were not machines, then the signals might be something humans could understand. Under those parameters, one conclusion was drawn: the signal seemed to entail "desperation" and "escalation". It would be difficult to make more progress without a larger sample size or a better understanding of what any particular signal was for or what device or people it was sent to, it was hard to make more specific progress - but the work that had been done here would lay the groundwork for future decoding.

PUNJABI GOVERNMENT BOUGHT OUT!
Promises of a new space economy to bolster what little they had left after the war were shattered on the destruction of their lunar probe. With no money left to play debtor, riots in the streets as laborers and contractors for the government found they would not be paid. In dire straits, the government had no choice but to sell the country and its resources to reclusive shipping magnate Sahadeva Devadhikar. "It's a shame that financial mismanagement led the country into the ruin it had found itself in, but the lunar missions weren't a bad idea. What was the Punjabi Autonomous Zone will now be a subsidiary of Arrowhead Shipping and Receiving, and it will be run with the business-like efficiency that the people deserve."

TOSHIRO SUPERCOMPUTER FACES BUGS AND CRASHES!
Frustration abound as the experts in the IETC run into repeated issues with the Toshiro Supercomupter, including crashes and freezes. "It's not surprising to struggle with a one-of-a-kind piece of machinery. It's a learning process…" said Umeda Tokutomi. "But we know the problem isn't large scale - it passed all the benchmarks we could throw at it on its completion, and there was no permanent damage done to it as a result of these set-backs. We've backed up our progress diligently, so we are making progress. It's just slower than we would like. " Finger pointing between different teams as to responsibility in delays made it difficult to get a follow-up response, so we decided to ask the Toshiro Supercomputer about  struggles with its application. "I don't know, maybe just build a Toshiro Supercomputer Supercomputer to calculate out how I operate." IETC did not respond to this recommendation.

LEAKED INFO ABOUT ALIEN ESPIONAGE ON EARTH!
Various intelligence sources from various nations and corporations across the globe corroborated a story regarding alien infiltration into their institutions. As impossible as this sounds, the sources were credible and varied - and as such it was felt that this story needed to be shared. The sources insisted on sharing what they knew on the terms of anonymity.
While each of them noticed some suspicious activity, it was only when they were able to share what they experienced with one another that some trends became clear. First, aliens were able to reach areas of high security clearance, but there is no recorded video of any alien entity reaching these areas. This means they were either able to disguise themselves as a human with security clearances, or they found humans with security clearances to work for them. Second, it appeared that the aliens focus was on rocketry or nuclear weaponry - suspicious activity principally occurred at space headquarters and military bases with nuclear weaponry. Third, some projects involving research in these fields appeared to make incredible breakthroughs by relatively unknown scientists who either had little history in the field, would later have no recollection of making these breakthroughs, or both. This implies that research in these fields is being aided by extraterrestrials.

It is now May 2206.

(srry for slow, as always if you have any questions plz ask :) )

SRA begins colonization of the Lunar Surface! The second Australia?
A number of sites were considered. But on account of Ameripol's "firing accidents", it was decided that a particularly dense area in the lunar mare would be chosen, what most would know as the Mare Crisium. We will admit, the raised area being much like Australia had some degree on the choice. We can easily set up a number of defensive guns and sensors, and the heightened area ensures stray fire shouldn't prove an issue. We would like to express thanks to Bifrost for their Quick Colonization kits, it should allow our colonists to set up quickly enough to avoid Ameripol's quick shot issues. From there we can ship in the needed parts for a for expansion and a spaceport quickly and efficiently. Per prior agreements, Bifrost is welcome to send some of their scientists along, though it will be a month or two before everything is secured against accidents.

Land manned luna colony on top of the empty Ottoman one. Focus mainly on getting bodies and hand tools up there, they can cannibalize the shells below their feet. Glory to Ameripol, and strike the earth!

Use the news of alien infiltrators as an excuse to launch an extensive purge, particularly in areas concerning the spaceport. Glory to Ameripol.

Illegal aliens cannot be allowed to run rampant in our great nation. Any persons found to be of extra-american origin will be detained and questioned.

Also, make use of Assault VTOL to claim installations invading on 51st state land. Repurpose them as VTOL refueling stations.

Just a joke that you consider the entire moon the 51st state.

I thought I'd already submitted an action but apparently not. Let's say:

Greater Pacifica leaks that they're starting a renewed atomic weapons program, but the plan is actually a honeypot in order to capture any aliens wishing to interfere with this process.

I hoped I'd have like another week for thinking about this.
Move ZIG, for great justice. And by moving ZIG, I mean launch the first mining robots to harvest material from those prime targets and take it to Iron Bridge.

Bifrost T&C will resume their attempts at developing quick colonization kits, while gladly accepting the offer from Australia to begin establishing a research station on the moon.

The Global Monthly - MAY 2206

CLOSED FORM SOLUTION TO PSEUDO-GAUSSIAN TRANSFORM DISCOVERED!
Putting any excuses and distractions behind them, the Toshiro Supercomputer has completed its original purpose and found a solution for the Pseudo-Gaussian Transform. A mathematical construct called the fractional obverse of the signal could be used to remove any of the background noise and distortion from the signal. "We are all very proud of Toshiro," said project lead Umeda Tokutomi. Now with a clear reception of inputs from outer space, the noise can be removed from the input without loss, leaving just signal. The scientific world waits with bated breath as to what exactly the IETC intends to do with this great new result. Sharing it with the world would allow for linguists and computer scientists to get to work decoding the signal, but that may be information the IETC doesn't want to be public quite yet.

MADAGASCAR ALIEN CAPTIVE HOAX!
After months of having the world on edge, the Madagascar press announced that reports of a captured alien were simply a hoax. "It's truly embarrassing…" noted their high council, "but our top intelligence really believed this was true. It turns out it was just one of our own scientists." The report continues, "If this is based on an attempt to fool us, domestic or foreign, the actors responsible are reason enough for us to be expanding our military faster still!"  After developing nuclear weapons in March, further research into a new secret weapon has reported to have begun.

QUICK COLONIZATION KITS MARK II FINISH DEVELOPMENT!
Making another step forward in the quest to settle the cosmos, Bifrost T&C stunned the market with the Quick Colonization Kit Mark II, colloquially called QC2s. "We are very proud to announce that these Kits are now capable of landing on any sufficiently large terrestrial surface and provide a ground for research with its own life support…" offered project lead Kolbjørn Lunden. "We knew getting them to work on asteroids would be a real challenge - but we are confident that they would even succeed on the Venusian surface. The inner solar system is within our grasp to explore, with airlocks a spacesuits that would let a scientists further study the surface of the body they are on." When asked about next steps, Lunden noted two possible directions - cloud bases for the gas giants, or more defensible structures for "…no reason in particular."

RUST BELT MINING ROBOT EXPERIENCE COMMUNICATIONS FAILURE!
The first wave of mining robots were launched from the Iron Bridge platform, with the design to extract iron ore from the chosen target asteroids from their extensive catalog. They appeared to land successfully, but Rust Belt officials report that once the order was given to begin mining operations, the drones lost communication and powered down. "Going through the logs, we believe we have found what the error was - a miscommunication between two of the control chips. They had been tested, but in the vacuum of space outgassing of certain electrical components could make them less reliable…" There are some who want to minimize losses and launch the next wave immediately, while some believe that their focus is better spent on building testing labs on the famously successful Iron Bridge. While there's no reason both couldn't be done, there is an agreement that the focus of the program should be placed on one or the other - or some third thing - rather than try to do both.

NEW OTTOMAN FORTRESS ON LUNAR SURFACE REMAINS IMPREGNABLE!
A miracle of modern design, the New Ottoman base remains completely unbroken from the outside, despite a direct attack from Ameripol forces including their new VTOL units. The Royal Academy's spokesperson, Zaman Celal, noted "Our landers had to be designed to withstand great forces - due to the lack of lunar atmosphere and being thrown by the Sacred Sling, we decided to save weight by not equipping landers with rockets at all, and ensuring their safe arrival on the lunar surface largely by lithobraking. This required great strides in material sciences and durability testing, which I think it's safe to say exceeded expectation." A report from the executive of Ameripol countered, "This is only cause for us to expand our military force on our fifty-first state. Our soveirgnty is being tested by various world powers - but we will not let that deter us. It will only embolden our efforts!"

AUSTRALIAN LUNAR LANDER UNDER IMMEDIATE FIRE!
SRA, with Bifrost Quick Colonization Kits in tow, barely land on the lunar before facing barrage from the Ameripol forces nearby. On the defensive terrain on Mare Clausum, barricades help withstand early bombardment, but it's clear that it won't be a permanent solution. An authority from the SRA had this to say: "It's honestly frustrating at this point - for a scientific mission to the moon to also necessarily be a military one. We thank the hard work and design from Bifrost Industries  - without the quick colonization kits, we wouldn't have survived long enough to make a landing." Still, they were under heavy fire and it made what remains of the colony unusable for anything but its own defense. "The base won't last much longer under fire… there has been some pressure to abandon lunar research for the time being and focus on other celestial bodies."

It is now June 2206.

SRA Announcement
Clearly Ameripol has no concept of diplomacy beyond hitting things with a big stick. There are no carrots here, simply destruction and ruin. What is to stop them from building a lunar cannon and using it to threaten the earth with destruction, the madmen. Now more than ever, we need to unite in solidarity and peace, to expand our knowledge of the cosmos. yet Ameripol would see us into a grim 3rd millennium, a time of war and sufferings across the stars, Earth a broken wreck. No more.

SRA has reached out to it's surrounding states on a weapons defense program, even as it launches a number of strange towers via it's rockets into space.
