Elon will use that money to buy Tiktok, then remake it in is image and I'm sure that will go as well as it did when he got Twitter.

Trump scrapped Biden's 'Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence' decree, and promised to invest 500 billion dollars in AI infrastructure and development.

Someone make sure that he does not install ChatGTP as head of the nuclear launch buttons anytime soon.

Meanwhile, the EU decided today to make independent factcheckers mandatory for social media platforms. Meta will need to rehire them if they want to keep their service in the EU.
Everything is fine.  Elon will probably just syphon off 499.999 billion dollars and buy a boat or something.  The remaining shithole millionaires will divide up the remaining funds to buy some really expensive wine.  Zero dollars will actually be spent on AI.

Shortly after President Donald Trump announced a new massive AI infrastructure investment from the White House, “First Buddy” Elon Musk tried to tear it down.

“They don’t actually have the money,” Musk wrote on his social media platform X. “SoftBank has well under $10B secured. I have that on good authority.”

Trump said the investment will create a new company, called Stargate, to grow artificial
Nah, the 500 billion is for the stargate project and is private money not coming from the government. Elon is malding about it cause he has his own competing AI company and since its private money for other people he won't have any way to siphon it off.

I have little doubt the money is going to go to its stated purpose; which is building hundreds of billions of dollars worth of data centers so OpenAI can make and run more AI because: 1) Altman really believes in the potential of AI (even if only to make $$$) and is investing crazily in it, 2) They aren't using government money, the people actually investing in it aren't going to be foisted off like the government would be.

Oh, I'm sure the US taxpayers will somehow get stuck with at least part of the bill.  But yeah, it sounds like it might happen.
Or maybe be a giant call center, since isn't AI right now just a bunch of people pretending to be AI?

Elon Musk (replying to the announcement): They don’t actually have the money.

Sam Altman: I genuinely respect your accomplishments and think you are the most inspiring entrepreneur of our time.

Elon Musk (continuing from OP): SoftBank has well under $10 billion secured. I have that on good authority.

Sam Altman: Wrong, as you surely know.

Want to come visit the first site already under way?

This is great for the country. I realize what is great for the country is not always what is optimal for your companies, but in your new role, I hope you will mostly put the United States first.

Satya Nadella (CEO Microsoft, on CNBC, when asked about whether Stargate has the money, watch the clip at the link his delivery is perfect): All I know is, I’m good for my $80 billion.
...
Sam Altman: big. beautiful. buildings. stargate site 1, texas, january 2025.
To be clear, its not in the "might happen at some point" stage, its in the "its already happening" stage.
The Stargate Project (a new joint company) has already started building at least one completely massive data center, they are still a long way from having all the money, but I would be pretty shocked if they don't get it.
Note that stuff like this is in line with the projections of companies pouring vast and almost exponential amounts of money into getting more compute for AI and very far from the idea that this AI stuff is just a small bubble that's going to pop soon.

As for if the government ends up pouring money into Stargate? Yeah, I could totally see that happening. Least it would piss Muskrat off.

Re: China.
They (like most people outside the field) aren't actually taking AI seriously, so they aren't trying that hard. If AI advances continue at some point that will change, but currently the US is significantly ahead of them.
Deepseek is doing really good though; they cookin.

Six warehouses on an unpaved dirt lot doesn't look that impressive, especially with the amounts of money being talked about.

Also why call it Stargate if they aren't making a portal to alternate dimensions with it?

I don't imagine that they will look that impressive even when complete honestly, datacenters aren't all that flashy from the outside; certainly not at all visually impressive when compared to other large industrial facilities.

As for why they are calling it stargate? I imagine its because OpenAI is well known to have a really shitty naming sense.

Stock market dropped like 10% today when Deepseek released their their AI on the appstore.
Notably they trained it way cheaper (5 million to train after all the other costs, but the other costs probably totaled like ~1 billion, so still damn expensive) then other AI companies, and its ~20 cheaper to run.

It feels pretty obvious why this resulted in a stock drop for companies that make AI (Google, Meta, ect).

But in what's a clear failure of intelligence on the part of the stock market it also resulted in a massive drop of Nvidia (which fair enough, may have been overpriced), the people selling the chips everyone (yes, Deepseek too) uses to make AI.
The idea that AI being way cheaper to make (and thus needs less chips to train and use) means that they will sell less chips is obviously wrong because demand isn't flat; the cheaper and more efficient AI becomes the more people will use it.

So if say, at one price you might have 1 AI char in a video game, if the price dropped 100x then every char in the video game would be AI.
Or maybe instead of generating a 1 min video at low rez you generate a 10 min video at double the resolutions, ect.
Or instead you make your AI 5 times the size and run it ten times as long to get the best answer.

No, faster better cheaper AI is not going to hurt Nvidia and stop them from selling absurdly expensive GPUs.
I just had to try this
Yeah, it has separate filter censoring it as you can tell by how it starts responding then deletes the response; if you have thousands of dollars worth of graphics cards and run Deepseek locally it isn't censored.

I must say that after several weeks of Trump and his tech-billionaire friends shitting on everything, I'm actually greatly enjoying this news.

I know I probably shouldn't because China taking the lead with highly censored AI platforms is not great either, but still.

The lack of ability of LLMs and reasoning models to learn while they are being run is a massive limitation. I don't think we'll ever get truly powerful AI until they turn on "learn while running."  Humans don't have separate learn / run modes, after all.  It's all "one mode."

I also don't worry too much about AI propaganda; it can't be any worse than the human-controlled propaganda.

EDIT: also this is funny... "domestic AI's jobs are being taken by foreign AI"

It's more like, all of those billions will now not be funneled to our billionaires, but to someone else's billionaires.
